Flattening An Object Hierarchy Using A Shim Class - Initializing Derived Object Properties From The Base Object?

Jul 10, 2010

I am somewhat new to object oriented programming and am attempting to flatten a Linq object hierarchy by using a shim class.how to initalize a derived class with property values from a base class?I have two objects, a base object with about 100 properties, and a derived object which inherits from the base object and adds a few additional properties beyond those of the base object. My simple constructor creates the derived object, but I am looking for a way to initialize the derived object properties with values from the base object.Right now I am using reflection to iterate over the properties individually and I suspect there may be a better way. The following example shows my shim class constructor for the derived class, and two properties:

newProperty1 - a new string property of the derived class

flattenedProperty2 - a new string property of the derived class, copied from a 2nd-level object of the base class

Code example:

Public Class derivedObj
Inherits baseObj
Private _newProperty1 As String[code].......

Is this the correct constructor approach to flatten the object hierarchy using a shim class? My second question relates to initialization of properties in the derived class. The constructor above creates the derived object, but what is the best way to initialize the derived object properties with values from the base object? The following code uses reflection to iterate over the properties individually, but I suspect there may be a better way.

Code example:

' property names are in the string array fieldNames

'baseObjQuery is an ienumerable of baseObj

'derivedObjList is a list of derivedObj[code].....

Is there a simple way to initialize values for the properties in the derived object based upon the values of the common properties in the base object?

Visual Studio 2008 - Reflection - Iterate Object's Properties Recursively Within Own Assemblies?

Sep 11, 2009

I wonder if anyone can help me - I've not done much with reflection but understand the basic principles.What I'm trying to do:I'm in the process of developing a class that gathers a lot of information about the local system, network, etc... to be used for automated bug reporting. Instead of having to change my test harness every time I add a new property, I'd (ideally) like to be able to serialise the lot as an XML string and just display that in a textbox.

Unfortunately, the Framework won't use the default XML serializer on read-only properties (which almost all of mine are) as they wouldn't deserialize properly [Not sure I agree with the assumption that anything serialized must be de-serializable - MS says this is a feature "by design" which I suppose I can understand - Perhaps a tag to indicate that it should be serialized anyway would be advantageous?]

The initial approach was to make properties gettable and settable (with a throw exception on the setter) but the amount of work tidying this up afterwards seems a little excessive and I would want the properties to be read-only in the final version.What I need help with:My current plan is to use reflection to recursively iterate through each (public) property of my topmost gathering class. The problem is, the samples I've seen don't handle things recursively. Additionally, I only want to inspect an object's properties if it's in one of my assemblies - Otherwise just call .ToString on it.

If I don't have the inspection limited to my assembly, I assume I'll get (say) a string which then contains a Length which in turn will have .Tostring method.For the purposes of this project, I can almost guarantee no circular references within my code and as this will only be used as a development tool so I'm not too concerned about it running amok now and then.

I can put values in the "normal" properties, but in the others when o try to assign values it gives the: "Object reference not set to an instance of an object"

But the code compiles fine.

dados_Defenicao = New ServiceReference1.draftClaimEntryDefinition
dados_Defenicao.arCode = "123"
dados_Defenicao.claimMarket.warrantyType = "w" - Here it gives the error

Saving Class Object To File

May 16, 2010

I have a question about how to save a class object to a file that can be used to create a same class later. The class should contain some structure or proprties and different types of data such as Byte, String, Bitmap, Color and so on. Is there any good way to save all these things? Convert the whole class to byte or make it to XML? The only way I know is saving to XML, but I feel hard to write all types like Image, Array List in XML. Here is a part of the class:

C# Accessing Properties Of An Object From A Collection Class?

Jun 10, 2009

I am moving from VB to C#. I am trying to loop through a collection class which is a collection of data classes but I can't seem to get the actual values out of the data class properties(find the correct code to do so). I have a method that loops through the collection class(Contacts) and saves each record(Contact). I am using reflection because my method will not know if it is Contacts class or a Customer class and so forth. Here is my code in VB(watered down)

Public Function SaveCollection(ByVal objCollection as Object, ByVal TableName as string, ByVal spSave as string)
Dim objClass as Object

[Code]....

The C# code keeps returning null. In my locals window I can see the proprties on the class on objClass and the value of the propery but I can seem to figure out how to access it through code. I used the DictionaryBase because that seems to closely match would I need to do. My data class(Contact) has a bunch or properties that match the field names in the database of the Contact Table. After I get the propInfo variable set I then set up my SQLParameter with the fieldname, datatype etc and then set the value to the propInfo.value.

Asp.net Mvc - Dynamic Object Properties In A MVC Helper On Entity Framework Object

Jul 20, 2009

I want to build a MVC helper function for which I pass a Entity Framework object and have it build a select. Generally speaking I tried something like this:

Public Function RenderSelect(ByVal helper As HtmlHelper, ByVal sSelectName As String, ByVal aItmes As Array, Optional ByVal sTitleKeyName As String = "name", Optional ByVal sValueKeyName As String = "id") As String
' open select

[Code].....

However, it isn't working. It would be great to have a way to do this and pass the current entity object.

Create An Object Of A Class In Which There Are Properties And Functions That Do Database Selects, Updates And Deletes?

Oct 22, 2010

how to implement UI, BL and DAL in a project the way that I see it as a requirement for some projects. The way I am able to do a project now is from a form create an object of a class in which there are properties and functions that do database selects, updates and deletes. Looks to me that doing a project like that is separating the UI from the DAL. In an update button click event I may call Obj. Delete (txtCustID.txt) for example. I don't understand the part of further breaking it down to include a Business layer; in which a vb solution is made up of three solutions.What goes in the BL?Does the BL call the DAL?

C# - Iterate Through The Member Variables Of An Object?

May 14, 2011

I'm building a litle console app that involves a control hierarchy -- there are screens, and inside of screens you can compose controls together.

You can add controls to a screen by declaring member variables (which all inherit from AresControl). The control constructor takes a simple coordinate pair. It looks like this:

Public Class IntroScreen : Inherits AresScreen
'Controls
Private LabelSelect As New LabelControl(72, 0)

[Code]....

This would result in cleaner, convention-based code. But try as I might, I can't get it to work - I can walk the member variables of a type, but I need to walk the member variables of a live object.

Create An Object From The Class - Use The Object To Interact With The SQL Db?

Apr 12, 2006

I am developing an IT Asset Tracking application using VB 2005 and SQL Server 2005 Express edition. Will I need to create classes to represent objects such as Computers, Printers, Scanners/Faxes, Contracts, Purchase Orders etc or are there any other approaches.For example, if I am correct, I will have a class called Computer and its properties will include Make,Model,CPU,Hard Disk,Memory etc. Is this the right approach.

Computers can be split up into Desktop PC's, Servers and Notebooks. Would I have to create separate classes for these as well or would they be ok under the Computer class.Once I create an object from the class, how can I use the object to interact with the SQL db.I am a beginner to VB.NET 2005 therefore I am slowly getting to grips with OOP.

Iterate Through The Keys And Values Collections Of A Dictionary Object Using An Index?

Apr 25, 2009

I have a VB.NET project where I am able to iterate through the keys and values collections of a dictionary object using an index:

MyDictionary.Keys(idx)
MyDictionary.Values(idx)

When this code is taken from the test project and placed into the real project I get the following error:

'System.Collections.Generic.Dictionary(Of Double, String).KeyCollection' cannot be indexed because it has no default property.[code]...

In the line in sub search that says "dtf.Keys(idx) = 0" place your cursor after the right parenthesis and backspace you should get a tooltip that says, "<Extension> ElementAtOrDefault(index as Integer) as Double - index: the zero based element of the index to retrieve.

public class example

private IAmAObject as new IAmAObject

File I/O And Registry :: Saving Data From Class Properties?

May 28, 2009

I currently have a class

Code:
Public Class Customer
Public Property AccountNumber() As String
Public Property PMDue() As String

[code]....

Account Class is initialized as new customer. To save the data from each property in the Account Class, I'm currently looping thru the properties each time Account obtains new data. I tried to simplify the process by the following line...

Code:
CustomerStreamToWrite.WriteLine(Account)

This does not work as written. I figured it would be much faster. It did not write out the property data. It saved "WindowsApplication1.Customer" Not exactly what I wanted. Is there a method to get it to save the properties in a written out style by just using the class name?

Object Properties Via Pointer?

I would like one loop where I can assign the data to the correct text box, set it visible and set the label visible. I can not figure out how to do this in VB, or know if it is even possible.

Here is an example of what I would like to do

Dim textbox As String = "textbox"

I would also like to do this to hide all the items on the form in the on load event.

So, ignoring the fact that the syntax is probably wrong - how does VB.NET get the Name property from sourceObject? Inspecting it at run-time reveals that sourceObject is of a type that supports a property called Name with a getter, but what does VB.NET do in this case? Is there some extra code that is being generated by the compiler to somehow cast this automagically at run-time?
