Oct 28, 2008I am working with VB 2008. I want to be able to run this program say in N: and it will show me in an excel sheet the following:
Folder Path Size(GB) Count of Files
N:Clients 0.53 308
where clients contains subfolders and files and the size is the total of all those files within each folder and the count is the total within each folder also.
This works fine as it is but i have to select one by one the top level folders and some of them are huge so it takes forever to give me an answer.
1) I would like to see in my spreadsheet the following by only select the network drive n:
Folder Path Size(GB) Count of Files
N:Clients 0.53 308
N:Software 10.7 15430
N:Billing 0.98 105
2) I would also like to know if this is the faster method.
3) I tried adding a progress bar so that the user can have an idea of how much this will take but i had to remove because it was not working.
4) I would like to see the folder name, size of folder and count of files in the listview.

Oct 21, 2010I'm trying to make alterations to an existing project, and I've found a project in the solution which is full of generated classes.Problem is, nobody here can tell me what generated them, so I'm pretty much left with pasting one of the classes in here and hoping someone will be able to tell me where they came from.
The solution I'm working on uses Expression Blend 3 and Visual Studio 2008. Dunno if that's relevant, but I'm trying to give as much information as I can think of... As well as this class, which appears in its own file, there's an "SPResults" file, which contains about 5000 lines of accessor classes of this type. Not quite sure why EndCustomer is in its own file...
From what I can see for myself, there's a stored procedure in one of the databases this program links to, and that SP's name is "GetEndCustomers". Something has then created a class called "EndCustomers" to represent the return type of this procedure.
The first part is a function from a class named Database, which returns a collection of the objects in question.

So, yeah, can anyone tell me what has been used to generate this class? It could be something in Visual Studio, Expression Blend, SQL Server Management Studio, or some obscure bit of software I haven't even noticed is on the PC. Any clues, anyone?

I have pretty much identical methods for other data objects which have been and still are executing just fine. One immediate difference I can think of is that this table has been recently updated in the database, removed from the dbml designer and re-added to the dbml designer. Apr 24, 2012I am writing an application that will use a OpenFileDialog control that will read a text file into memory and later process it.
I do have the following filter: Text files (*.txt)|*.txt|CSV files (*.csv)|*.csv|Spaced Text files (*.prn)|*.prn|All files (*.*)|*.*"
When I navigate to my test folder that contains a single .txt file, I see that file. When I change the filter to *.cvs that files goes disappears because it has a .txt extension. That is good. But when I select All files *.* it does not re appear? Why and how do I make it appear.

May 22, 2007Im getting a problem with one of my programs I have made in visual basic.NET where it gives me a memory error when i debug the program in the IDE. the exact error is this: "Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt". My program basically has a few forms with text fields on that get their text values from an access database on the same hard drive. Im wondering if im doing something wrong because my program just seems to eat up memory whenever it does anything. For example I have one form that has a combobox on it and when you change the drop down list selection it retreives a few strings from the database and puts them into the relevant text boxes, if you keep changing the selection then the memory usage (in task manager) just keeps going up and up. occasionally I get the error mentioned above when debugging but in my built version of the program it throws an exception everytime the memory usage gets past 49K.
Also I noticed when debugging in the "immediate window" frame I get the following message often:A first chance exception of type 'System. Invalid OperationException' occurred in System.Data.dll...Do I need to somehow be "releasing" the memory that is used to gather data once it becomes redundant?

I can tell that the BackgroundWorker is disposing of itself because I added a message box into the Disposed event handler.Is it necessary to detach the event handlers to ensure that the memory is cleaned up and that there are not memory leaks?

Apr 17, 2011I've noticed that every time I start a new thread in my program, the memory usage jumps about 1000k and it never goes back down. I have ensured that the thread is no longer running, and only one instance of my worker thread is ever running at a time. I am using ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem and ASyncOperation to get stuff done. The program starts using a Sub Main in a module that uses STAThread; I read that using STAThread instead of MTAThread makes it impossible for the Garbage Collector to get in and consider objects for garbage collection. However, when I change the STAThread to an MTAThread, the WebBrowser control in my frmMain cannot be instantiated.
I get this exception:
Code: An unhandled exception of type 'System.Threading.ThreadStateException' occurred in System.Windows.Forms.dll
Additional information: ActiveX control '8856f961-340a-11d0-a96b-00c04fd705a2' cannot be instantiated because the current thread is not in a single-threaded apartment. I do threading with the WebBrowser control, so will using MTAThread fix my problem? If so, how should I partition my code so that the WebBrowser control won't be affected by the above exception? I call the thread repeatedly with a timer (although only one instance ever runs at a time), and my program's memory usage starts at about 5000k and can jump to 300,000k+ depending on many times the thread needs to be called.

May 27, 2009I cannot use Visual Basic 2008 at all. When I go to "new project" and choose "Windows Form Application" I get this error.I have tried multiple uninstall/reinstall with no result.A microsoft reply to this suggested that I needed: " .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 " I checked, and I did not have the .netframework 2.0 service Pack 1.
When I tried to download and install the above from Microsoft.com, the istaller said that "it was not allowsed" and I was not able to install the service pack 1.
I tried Uninstalling net framework 3.5, 3.0, 2.0 and then reinstalling .netframework 2.0 sevice pack 1; then reinstalling Visual basic 2008 express edition. At the reinstall of Visual basic 2008, .netframework 2.0 sevice pack 1 is unistalled by .net framework service pack 2.When I check the foruims for simiar problems, the formus are mostly for Visual basic 5.0, or other programs that I do not have.
Here is the programs I have installed:
Operating system: Windows XP
Microsoft .net framework 1.1
Microsoft .NET framwork 1.1 Hotfix(KB928366)
Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2

Feb 9, 2011I have two forms, Form1 and Form2. Form2 has a button to show OpenFileDialog. I call Form2 from Form1 by a button. My startUp Form is Form1. When i start debugging, i press my Form1's button to show my Form2, it shows, but when i click On Form2's Button to show OpenFileDialog it is giving me exception that

When i set my startup Form to Form2 and click Form2's Button to show OpenFileDialog then it shows!
Checking For Mapped Drive?

To remove the drive I am using:

What I am looking for is how to verify that the z drive is mapped, and if so then run the unmapping drive command.When I try to use a if wshNet. anything the stupid thing won't return a true or false value?I searched all through the net to find some sort of If drive mapped = true, however nothing comes up that I can implement.

What I want to do is add some methods to the Job class. The Job class is defined in the LINQ to SQL classes .dbml file. So, in order to add methods, or anything else to the Job class what should I do?
Should I create a partial class named Job and define the methods in there? Will that then get mixed in properly? Not sure how to proceed on this one.

Feb 4, 2010I have an application that sends files to a Network drive that has been mapped as the "Z:" drive. When code first runs, it errors with "path cannot be found". Then if you open up MyComputer, and double click on the drive, windows asks you for UserName/Password. Once entered, if you run the code again, everything is fine.
So it looks like it cant find the drive b/c a username/password has not "unlocked" the drive yet.
How do I get vb to unlock the drive so I may transfer the file?
I found some stuff online but it seems like it self maps the drive. I'm just looking at applying the username/password to the mapped drive so I may copy.

Mar 28, 2010my first question on this board. I'm creating a media player(Like so many others). I try playing files over my network. When I pass this address "M:songssome artistsome song.mp3" to the windows media player control it actually opens "\ServerMEDIAsome artistsome song.mp3". But when my program checks if it is playing the correct song it thinks it is not, because the strings aren't equal. Is there a way in VB to get the network address of a mapped network drive? I can already see that it is a network drive but not wich address it points to.
