I have a menustrip in a VB.Net windows form, my teacher in the university said that if I could make all dropdowns of the menustrip become visible at once,I know I can .ShowDropDown() an entry, but when I call the next, the first one hides.

1. If I click on a menu item that has its own submenu, the menu will not collapse. I want the whole MenuStrip to collapse when I click on any item regardless if the item has its own submenu. How can I do this?
2. Is it possible to set the width of a MenuStrip less than the forms's width and have it docked in top-left corner? I would like to have a MenuStrip and a ToolStrip side-by-side along the top of the form.
I want a menu with just two dropdown lists, the menustrip puts a strip right across the form, is there any way to change the width of the strip? Changing in properties does not work. Is there a different type of menu I can use?

All of this - with lots of other textboxes on labels - is in another panel (the big panel).I make the big panel visible and not visible based on selections made by the user.This small panel - that's in the group box. I cannot seem to make it appear.Even if I leave it VISIBLE at design time - the objects in it will not appear.Is there some kind of nesting problem that I'm not aware of!

View 2 RepliesI'm having an odd problem when making a form visible and not visible and it not continuing to function. Here is what I have happening. I have a main form (frmMain) that is an MDIParent. On this form I have a menu to open a second form (frmCalculate) and populate a listview from Items in the database.
As I click or select items in the listview on frmCalculate the tag is read and data is pulled based on the id stored in that tag and fills in various fields on the form. This works great. However, I also have a context menu attached to the listview that allows me to perform a "what if" scenerio on the items I am calculating. When I select this menu, I hide the frmCalculate and open the frmWhatIf form where I can mess around with values on the item I had hilighted in the listview on frmCalculate. Nothing is pulled from or written back to the database here, all the information is filled in from fields on frmCalculate. It just allows me to look at rising costs and how they will affect my margins.... anyway.
If I then close frmWhatIf, it brings my frmCalculate back by setting its visible propery to true (never closed frmCalculate, just hid it). At this point if I click an item in the listview I get an exception for a null reference. IF however I never hide frmCalculate, I can open and close frmWhatIF without ever having an issue. Why do I lose the functionality to select items just by hiding and unhiding the form? As a test I added two menus to the toolbar on frmMain one called hide and one called show. I then opened frmCalculate with original menu item to populate the listview and selected a few items to test that it was working and then using the hide menu I made the form invisible and the show button to bring it back. This yielded the same exception so without even opening frmWhatIf the problem still occurs.
I have placed several PictureBox Images of different colored dots(which represent lights) on an image of a Christmas Tree. I can make the lights randomly flash using a randomGenerator and a Select case statement. However, the code is very long. There are 67 lights on this tree and the code is 71 pages long. There has to be an easier way to do this. So far I have tried the following with two images of lights just to see if it would work and it does not work:

View 2 RepliesI have a MenuStrip control and when I right clicked on it and selected "insert standard items", it created a few functions. There are a few options there that I would like to get working: Cut, Copy, Paste, Delete, and Select All. I presume that for what I want, I'd need to make my own classes for each function. (ie: Cut class, Copy class... etc.)

View 8 RepliesI am using vb.net 2008. I have a MDI form with a menu strip added. From different menu's i calling related Exe's and opening in side the MDI form. In this case setting of MDIparent properties to the child form (Exe) in not possible. In my Exe i am reading my MDI windows handle and using the setparent API function. In this case the exe is opening inside the MDI below the titile bar but it is hiding the menu strip. (In vb6 it is working fine - Means the exe opens below the menu strip). Is their any way opening the exe below the menustrip or toolstrip.

Any ideas why this would happen or how I can resolve it? I'm new to VB.net and OOP as a whole so if this is a simple problem.

I have a Combobox in DropDown mode. I have the code for handling the selected list item in the Validating event of the Combobox If the user highlights the text in the Combobox and presses the Delete key, the text is deleted The user then clicks the MenuStrip and the dropdown menu appears.

And I can't figure out how to remove these items as I already deleted the parent items.I tried deleting it from the properties menu by pressing delete on it but it doesn't work.
When I try to set a MenuStrip Item calling it by name it gives me an exception?

Either of the following statements cause errors.

However when I call Items using an integer it works perfectly.
I have found if you put a text box into a menustrip item everything under that menu no longer show it's properties when clicked and double clicking on the item does not got to the code until you click outside the menustrip. This behavior is only present when the menustrip render mode is system and only when a textbox is in that menu item. Fails with visual studio 2005 and 2010. Am using visual basic. Changing render mode from system to anything else makes everything work, change it back to system and it does not work. This only happens with a textbox in the menu strip item.
