Monitor Process Standard Output That Does Not Necessarily Use CR/LF

Jun 29, 2009

My application periodically starts console programs with process.start. I need to monitor the output of the programs in "realtime".

For example, the program writes the following text to the console: Processing...............

Every second or so a new dot appears to let the user know the program is still processing. However,... until the programm outputs a CR/LF, I am not able to retrieve the standard output of the program (while it is still running).

What can I do to get the output in realtime for - let's say - piping it into a database for instance in VB.NET?

Redirecting Standard Output From A Process (msxsl.exe) To A String

Nov 24, 2010

I am writing a command line application in VB.NET. This application is calling another one, msxsl.exe, to run an XSL transform. I am using the Process class to do this:[code]What I want it to be able to display the output from this process to the console of my application. I have read several posts explaining this method, but it does not seem to work in this case. The output is an empty string.[code]I have verified that if I run the msxsl executable on its own (i.e. running "msxsl.exe base.xml test.xsl -o styled.xml"), it displays output on the command line. What am I doing wrong?I should note that the msxsl process is currently failing due to a malformed XML file. It is displaying this error message:[code]This is exactly the type of thing I want displayed in the console of my application (or, eventually, a log file.)

Monitor The Registry For Changes Similar To How Sysinternals Process Monitor ?

Jan 31, 2011

Can I monitor the registry for changes similar to how sysinternals process monitor does it in VB? I have checked many different articles and C# samples but not come any closer to getting an answer, I would like to know if there an easier way (a VB sample perhaps)that you folks can share. Ultimately I'd like to be able monitor other things too like file system, processes etc but wonder most about how the registry can be done in VB...Would using system.management be a start? Or WMI? if so is there a nice VB sample..

.NET Read Standard Output?

Jun 30, 2011

From my application I need to run a command and parse the output. I can do this with no problem but I don't want the command to be displayed. I hoped WindowStyle = ProcessWindowStyle.Hidden would work but it doesn't. Take the sample code below for example. It works fine but the command window still visibly opens and closes very quickly and I need it to never show its ugly face. How can I fix this?

Redirecting The Standard Output?

Jun 16, 2010

I am having trouble redirecting standardoutput and standarderror from a command line program that dumps a lot of numbers to the screen. I've looked through a lot of similar posts and think my code matches what it should be doing (asynchronous reading of the data with appropriate invokes for writing to the log text box) but it still just hangs the application until my p.WaitForExit times out. Once it times out and I kill the process, a chunk (but not all) of the data is written to the textbox in from the OutputDataReceived event handler. Any ideas what is going on here? I've seen some posts regarding buffer size, but that apparently is fixed (i.e. I can set a buffer size of 1 and receive every char). Below is my function to execute the process and two relevant event handlers.

Private Function ExecuteWallGen() As Boolean
Dim bResult As Boolean = False
Dim szExec = Me.ExecutablePath & Me.WallGenExecutable

.net - Redirecting Standard Output When Generated?

I am trying to redirect the output of a c program which generates output in the console. I can redirect the output once the process exits. But is there the way to redirect the output as and when there is some output in the shell window? I require this to make it understandable that the program is running and since different steps of the c code may take, say 10-15 minutes to run.

Status Updating While Reading Standard Output?

Dec 23, 2010

I use the following code to read the standard output from a command line application from a main winforms application, and then I use the BeginInvoke code to update a textbox with the status. What I am not sure about is if I can have a smoother process. The code loads up about 10 to 20 text inserts, and those are all seen at once... not a smooth process where each status is updated. Any thoughts on if the reading of the standard output and/or the beginvoke code could seem more smooth to the user?

Delegate Sub UpdateUIStatusHandler(ByVal StatusMessage As String, ByVal JobName As String, ByVal Direction As String)
Dim ProcessJob As New ProcessStartInfo(GSyncExe, RunJob)
ProcessJob.UseShellExecute = False : ProcessJob.CreateNoWindow = True : ProcessJob.RedirectStandardOutput = True : ProcessJob.RedirectStandardError

Interface And Graphics :: GDI Output To A Monitor And Projector

Aug 30, 2008

I'm writing a VB2005 program (for WinXP) to implement a lighting show and need to clarify a few things before I buy a video projector.My PC has 2 Geforce 8800GTS cards. One will feed a standard monitor (housing the program control interface) and the other will feed the video projector doing the lighting show.My prog uses GDI DrawString to output text to the video projector.In the prog I want the output of Form1 (control interface) to ALWAYS go to the Monitor (through the primary display adapter) and the output of Form2 (GDI text strings) to go to the video projector (through the secondary display adapter).Can I assign a FORM to a specific Display Adapter or Monitor/Projector so that all output from that form will automatically go to that adapter (monitor/video projector)?If not, what is the best way to do it? Perhaps something like the following? Frankly I have no idea whether this is even remotely correct or whether there is a better way. [code] If the above is correct, will it work for a video projector as well (i.e. is a porojector also set to a specific resolution/bounds and is that resolution/bounds used as its size, as with a monitor?

How To Monitor Windows Process

Nov 4, 2009

Second, I have a question which I have been trying to find answer for a wile but without any success.How can I monitor Windows Process for any change (create/kill) after run my app ? the only way I have think about it is that used two lists, the first one load the process list on it and the second refresh each 1 sec to get the new one and compare the two to know the difference, but its useless because you cant know who killed or created the process and other information.

As I have been read before, I guess there is a need to implement windows API, hook to detect process changes ? Is there any idea or solution for this?

Note: I am using VB.NET (2010)

Monitor A Process's Progress Using A Form?

Feb 26, 2011

Bit of a Noobie question here, I have a process, for example[code]...

I need to launch the process from within code in a form or module and I want to monitor its progress, for example with a progress bar.

The problem I have is that in order to use a 'progress form' I have to show a form modally, then kick off the process (usually with a button) and allow a cancel option.

I want the form to show then start running automatically without user intervention.

Create Monitor Start/stop Of Process?

Jan 2, 2010

what is the method to tell when a user starts or stops a process? My company makes a software package that allows a tie in from vb. I want to make a package to allow me to start and stop the software remotely and to monitor when the software is running or not.Ideally there would be some sort of event in windows when the user starts or stops the software. I imagine there is some sort of way to do this with a timer, but I am sure that windows will have some sort of event process when the program starts. I have googled this and looked through the xtremevbtalk forums for this but I am not quite sure as to what keywords to use.

.net - Deal With Output From A Secondary Process In Realtime?

Apr 27, 2012

I am trying to write a VB .NET program that runs a Perl script and reads and uses the standard output. I'd like to be able to handle each line separately as it is printed, and update my program display accordingly. Here's some code I have "written" (read: "mostly copied off the internet"):

Private WithEvents pscript As Process
Private Sub myProgram_Load(sender As Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load
pscript = New Process()

[Code]....

This works with one problem: the program waits until the test script has run to completion, and then fires several OutputDataReceived events one after the other. This means that when I make it use the real script, it's likely to do nothing for as much as several hours, and then have to deal with, like, 5,000 events at once, despite the fact that stuff was being printed at fairly regular intervals throughout that time.

Is there any way I can make it deal with each line of text when it is written, instead of all of it at once at the end?

Process.start And Redirect Output To File?

Jan 15, 2011

I want to launch a file from a VB program and capture the output of that file in a text document.Here's an example:Process.Start("systeminfo.exe > Data.dat")This doesn't work. I get an error that the file cannot be found. I've tried using Shell instead of Process.Start. I've also tried replacing systeminfo.exe with a variable and replacing the redirect portion with a variable.The ultimate goal is to get the text file e-mailed. So, if it were possible to output to the Clipboard, then paste that to a file or directly into an e-mail client that would also work.

so my question is, anyway to use regular button functionality for toolstripbutton or there is a way to add regular button on toolstrip.
