View 3 RepliesI am using Visual Basic Express 2008 to make a simple game. I am trying to declare a dataset object and datatable but I'm getting a bizarre syntax error and I can't find a help reference.
Line A - I dimension GameTable as an Object
Line B - I instantiate the object
Line C - I edit data in the GameTable
Line D - I display the data in Visual Basic
Line C will crash in runtime if I don't do sometype of "New" declaration
Line B is my attempt at a "New" Declaration by I get an error message I don't understand - "Type Expected" - I think I have the syntax wrong here.

creating some training for using the Serial Port.To that end I have developed some VB .Net software and built a device, using Matrix's E-blocks, that communicates with the PC using the SerialPort. I am currently taking a Tech Writing class and working on the documentation, which will include a lot of VB .Net code.

I'm doing a project using Microsoft Speech SDK 5.1 and I'm using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 or VB .NET. I saw a sample program that came with Speech SDK 5.1 named "Dictation Pad" where he can make voice training come out. This app was made with C++ so I was wondering if I could do it also in VB. I would just want to create a button to press and then the training dialogue would come out. I really need it!

I have a form called document_form. I have three variables:
Dim Doc1, Doc2, Doc3 as Document_form
How do I check if a particular form exists? I want to show Doc1. If it does not exist I have to first create it.
Something similar to:
If Doc1 = Null Then
Doc1 = new (document_form).
End If
In an ASP.NET 3.5 VB web app, I successfully manage to cache an object containing several personal details such as name, address, etc. One of the items is CreditNum which I'd like to change in the cache on the fly. Is there a way to access this directly in the cache or do I have to destroy and rebuild the whole object just to change the value of objMemberDetails.CreditNum?The cache is set using:
Public Shared Sub CacheSet(ByVal key As String, ByVal value As Object)
Dim userID As String = HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name
HttpContext.Current.Cache(key & "_" & userID) = value
End Sub
In the following two code snippets, the code does the same thing, when I tested this.
Dim test As New Class1 Dim test As New Class1() Do the parantheses make a difference in some way? Is there an explanation of this in the msdn library?
I'm planning my road in VB training on my own at home using various books and online resources, like MSDN and book publisher support sites, etc. My initial goal is to become familiar w/the VB 2008 language but then to build upon that w/other skills like perhaps, ASP. Net, ADO .Net and so on. Maybe concentrate on WPF/XAML? My question is, where do I go next after initially learning the VB 2008 language? Not only that, what should my learning "list" look like, assuming it a good idea to "add" to the lot w/other VB skills? What's a "real world" learning plan look like in VB? Which should I consider to be "priority" core VB skills to learn after initially learning the VB language? What is a realistic VB skill portfolio look like?

View 1 RepliesCan anyone suggest a book or a direction for some training other than bombarding you guys with posts all the time? I'd like something geared more for teaching than for just reference. Books really aren't cheap and I'd like to just buy one if possible. Free website tips and training would be nice too. I've built a calculator for fun and my project will be more database oriented but I'd like to build more form applications.

View 7 RepliesI thought I would practice using reflection by building an Object Browser similar to what's in VS2010.
The reflection part is easy enough, but I'm can't find any means of determining where all of the assemblies are installed. On my machine (Win 7) the GAC would seem to be located at C:Windowsassembly.
However, 4.0 assemblies look to be located at C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETassembly in either GAC_32 or GAC_MSIL.
VS Object Browser obviously knows where to look, you can even filter on "All Components" or select a framework version.
But when I look at the Object Browser in VS, I find that it lists assemblies from several different locations: For example...
CODE:
How does VS know to list these assemblies? Is there some registry key I'm missing that defines all of these locations?
My question is on how custom controls should be updated.
I downloaded this owner drawn custom control, which I built, then copied the DLL to the Debug folder of the project and loaded it into the toolbox from there.
I decided to use this button on another project. I was mildly surprised to see the control was still in the toolbox but it seemed to work just fine. I decided to change this custom button's behavior. The button in the toolbox referenced the old version number. So I deleted it and loaded the newly rebuilt DLL.
Now come the problems. The first application--the one where the DLL was added to the toolbox from--still runs okay, but the second application is throwing errors, saying, Type 'CButtonLib.CButton' is not defined. When I add the button to a form, it appears okay. I can change its properties and it shows up in the code windows and in the object browser. But as soon as I try to run it and it throws the errors, it no longer appears in the object browser. References in the code window lose their intellisense.
Things I've tried include:
Copying the DLL to the project's debug and release folders and loading them into the toolbox from there. Removing it from the toolbox altogether and just adding a reference then copying and pasting a button directly from the first project. Copying in a form with a CButton on it from the first project. This is just a general question, I need help with something on Visual Basic 2008. I do not know why, but as of late every time I open up a project in Vb it gives me something called an object browser. I try to find my forms so I can work on my program, but I can't find them. Has anyone else had this problem or knows how to fix it? I can't get to my forms!!

In VB6 I could use an asterisk as a wildcard when searching the object browser. For instance, searching on "c*Report" would find "cFooReport" and "cReport". I can't seem to do the same in VS2008, am I just missing something obvious?

I have done research on how to manually create sorting in a grid-view and none of it is thorough enough for me to follow. I need more of a step by step solution, like what event should my sorting code go in, how would i enable the headers to allow sorting. normally, i just have .net do this but for some reason this time it doesn't allow it, maybe because i am not using a datasource.that's my code that creates a datable and then binds to the gridview.
