the only way i could get a VB.Net program to insert a timestamp into a mysql db was using Now() in the VB and putting the column as Var Char in the Mysql DB. Have i royally screwed myself or can i still pull this back in PHP and manipulate the data, ie select * from test where date between...etc.How does mysql interpret a var char column in terms of dates/times?

I have a vb.net app using plain old ado.net to run a s'proc on the database server. The proc simply inserts a record that contains binary data.When this executes, I can see the exec call on the proc being made from within sql profiler.ado.net claims everything worked, no errors. However, a record isn't inserted. There are no key collisions or anything like that.I copied the query I saw from profiler and ran it directly within management studio. When I run it there, the record is inserted.For whatever reason, sql server and ado.net were conspiring against me. The user account I was attempting to execute the s'proc under did not have execute rights for it. After I set those rights then it was proceeding as normal.Now, the problem I have is that there should have been some type of warning, error, exception, whatever that said "hey, you can't do this" instead of simply saying "Everything is good" But that's a question for Microsoft.
View 2 RepliesI have a form with multiple tabs that allows the user to insert data into a customer table.The ID is an Identity column. After a row is inserted into the database I would like to retrieve the ID number for that row that was just inserted into the database. Can you tell me the best way to do this?When the user clicks on a Relatives tab the application inserts the customer to the database. If I can get the the newly inserted customer ID then I can use it for the CustomerID column of the Relatives table when inserting a Relative so the 2 tables are properly related. At present the program uses this code to do just that but this code will only be good for a single user system. It's possible that we may sell it as a multi-user system and I think the current way we are doing this will fail because there is not telling whose ID will be returned in that scenario.

both queries have 5 fields. now what i want to do is after this insert or update takes place, i need to look at this inserted/updated record and compare it with another table (table2). This is really a pre-defined table and the data is already specified to be inserted to the table. However, my primarily task is to read a flat file which has the data and consider the first line as the column to be column names.
Therefore, initially I created an open dialogue to browse for the text file and store the path such as E:Datafile est.txt, in a TextBox1 visible at run time. Now the task is to change the above "create table" to read the txt file (column names are on the first line) and then create the table in the database.
