ToolStrip On A Databound Form - Toolstrip Buttons Don't Receive Focus In The Normal Way ?
Mar 24, 2009I really want to make use of the toolstrip and databinding but these two technologies keep conflicting with each other. I think the root cause is something to with the fact that the toolstrip buttons don't recieve focus in the normal way.
I invite you to try the following:-
1. Create a form and put some text boxes a tool strip with a save button on it.
2. Write a query or sproc to get a datatable back and bind your text boxes to the field in the datatable.
3. In the code behind your Save ToolStripButton put some code that makes an arbitrary change to a field on the dataset (it doesn't matter whther this field is bound to a text box or not). eg:-
m_DataTable.Rows(0).Item("CommissionRatePerc") = "0.0000"
4. Put a breakpoint in the save and run the form.
5. Make some changes in the text boxes. Do not leave the last text box but rather click save while a text box whose contents you have edited still has focus.
6. When your code hits the breakpoint, query the value of the data table field that is bound to the text box you were editing when you clicked save - it will still contain the unedited value. Unless you do something about it that unedited value is going to get saved back to your DB.
We did get around this problem by explicetely setting the focus to another control on the form before saving. That worked most of the time because it prompts the text box to flush it's value back to the datatable (nb EndEdit does not work, although you'd have expected it to). However, and this is the reason I suggested you add a line of code that changed a value in the underlying datatable in step 3, if you change a value in code in this way before the value from the text box get's flushed back then it doesn't seem to matter what you do, the user's current edit is simply lost. They will still show in the text box, though, leading your user to believe that the change has been committed when it hasn't. Our final solution is that we never ever change a value in the adtaset in the code behind our toolstrip buttons. That's working but it's a pretty big restriction.
Get A Stack Overflow?

Apr 19, 2012I've never seen this error before; and apparently (According to DIC) the number would have be bigger than -9,223,372,036,854,775,808 to 9,223,372,036,854,775,807, to this this exception (I'm using an Integer, but I've tried Int64, and the same thing happens).
This is where the exception is being thrown:

I highly doubt that that the integer that is being parsed back is greater than, either of those numbers listed above. I've tried using Int64, and even removing the << operator, but it's still throwing this exception.

Cryptography - Overflow Of Variable As In C#?
Mar 19, 2012I need to make some big multiplications for cryptographic reasons in vb.net and overflow the variable as C,C++ and C# does. I have disabled the check of overflow at the vb.net project but when i an doing those multiplications i get as a result 1.#INF
ex. in c:

in vb.net:

Mysterius One Byte Overflow

Run Time Error 6(Overflow) In VB?

In this flow, users are getting Run-Time error 6(Overflow). But this is not happening all the time. Iam not able to reproduce also?Would there be any other reason for this, apart from normal reasons like assinging a higher value to lower datatypes.

Stuck With An Odd Stack Overflow?
Oct 27, 2009I'm writing this program in Visual Basic .NET to organize different fields of data, and I'm using profile slots through application settings to store the data for users. But, I ran into a stack overflow error in my SlotSelect.vb class. My best plausible guess for why this happens is that I'm using the wrong kind of variable container in the below sauce code, but my dilemma is that I don't know what specifically is going wrong.The code that the vshost is saying is the cause for the overflow was written from some code that I looked up on MSDN and other places for referring to objects in other classes, and I tried using other variants of it to see if it was any different. So far, nothing has worked, and it doesn't stop the error while compiling, much less in the code markup--it only catches it when it starts the application in debug after it finishes building

Jul 9, 2010i finished a project ive been working on for weeks or well i thought i had finished it.. in VS debug environment it runs fine doing its logics for hours without a problem but after publishing it as a standalone it starts throwing errors pretty soon. Took another look at whats going on in VS debug and the only thing that stands out is "A first chance exception of type 'System.OverflowException' occured.." that pops up every now and then so i think this is whats crashing my program outside vs. This poses 2 problems a) the code is around 2k lines/3 classes and heavily multithreaded and i have no clue where exactly this error gets generated, b) from my previous encounters with first chance exceptions they seem like more "possibility for error" instead of an actual error itself and very hard to track down

Arithmetic Operation Resulted In Overflow
Feb 8, 2010Why a variable defined as a long will not accept this number (2,148,532,224) with out throwing an exception of "Arithmetic operation resulted in an overflow." Looking at documentation it should be able to handle a value up to 9,223,372,036,854,775,807.
My code does some simple calculations and then tries to store the value in the variable.
Dim mdblTotalFileSize as Long = GetImageSizeBlocks * GetBlockSize
The value for GetImageSizeBlocks is 1049088 and the value of GetBlockSize is 2048 which equals 2148532224

DateTime Arethmetic Overflow Error

When I use some StartDates and End Dates like 04/11/2009 and 06/11/2009 it works fine and I am able to get the info into my DB. However; when I use other dates like 04/11/2009 and 13/11/2009, I get the following error:

Because web can only make requests and get responses back once, how does Stack Overflow handle messages? In my implementation I have a recursive loop that gets called every 1 second and makes an Ajax request to the server to get the latest messages, but I am thinking of using web services

It usually results in an overflow. It only works if I start with something small like 4. I have to work with starting numbers such as 30-60. I thought changing the value type to LONG would prevent this problem. This is VB.net just for reference.

IDE :: CType Overflow When Converting Minimum Long Value
Oct 1, 2010I'm developing a custom control for numeric input that does some basic value range checking and have run into an issue when I set my property ValueMin equal to Long.MinValue. The IDE generates the following line in form1.designer.vb file that subsequently is flagged as generating an overflow.

I've done some checking using the Immediate Window with the following results.

It appears that the CType function does not recognize the minimum Long value when the value is typed into the function, but works fine if it is passed Long.MinValue or a string with the value. It works fine for a typed in value equal to (Long.MinValue + 1). This problem only occurs with the Long (Int64) type.
