I would like for my program to pause for about 3-5 seconds and then close/exit after pausing. I've used the my.application.doevents() and threading.thead.sleep as well, which may work, but when I add close() after the pause it just closes.

However, I have noticed that theres bit of a delay, about 5 seconds or so, in closing the connection. However, the delay only occurs after the command object executes the specified query. I've worked in a setup like this before and don't remember there being such a long delay while closing the connection. [Code] The connection closes almost immediately. What gives? I have narrowed it down to the where the .ExecuteReader line that causes the delay in the connection close. Whats causing the delay and how do I resolve it?

My problem is that I have a textbox that is filled with a line of data from an attached barcode scanner. I want to make it so when something is scanned into this box, another function is triggered (it clears the textbox and commits the data to a CSV file, so the user can scan another barcode). I was using a .TextChanged function so that when the text was changed in this textbox, it would commit it then, however the problem with this approach is that if the serial number is 77G8DS, then it will commit 7,7,G,8,D and S individually, instead of an entire string.

So if I don't have the sleep function then oasicer hasn't loaded and it says it's finished straight away, but if I call a 5s sleep then it crashes, and not for just 5 sec. Is there a replacement for this line? Something that would just delay going to the while loop?
I am not sure how to make my program pause in the middle of execution, waiting for a certain period of time to pass BEFORE the next lines execute. I am trying to make the program close if the -1 string is sent with the program. See my installer allows for me to run certain programs before it actually installs, but it doesn't shut down copies of the program itself. So I have a next startup instance set to shut the program down if the -1 is received. But if the program is not running it starts up instead. This is not desired. form1.close doesn't work. e.cancel = true doesn't work, etc etc. What can I do to make the program not start during this instance.
I'm currently in the process of building a text editor type program, and have run into a brick wall. I haven't done VB in years, so I may just need a little reminder on some things. I have coded everything so far as far as opening files, saving them, changing fonts, colors, etc. However, I'm looking to add a Close button to my menu strip that will just close the currently opened file, and not the entire program, while also ask the user if he/she would like to save before closing the file, and then if they select yes, it will show the save dialog, and if not, it will go ahead and close the currently opened item.

In my work, we have a program done by other company, and we don't have the code to change it. This program register a serie of numbers and then if the user whants, save them to an xml file. But if the user forget to save and close the program, it doens't ask if whant to save the data, it simply close and all data is lost. I already have the save file, open file dialogs working properly but I want to add something else that works with them. Lets say I open a file and the listbox adds all the strings from the file.
