VS 2008 Make A Program Stop Or Pause For A Period Of Time Before Continuing The Code Without A Timer?

Jun 13, 2009

Out of curiosity, is there a way i can make a program stop or pause for a period of time (which i would choose) before continuing the code WITHOUT a timer.I think I've seen this done before, but I'm not positive. Also note that I'm talking about a forms application (not a console app if that would be any different.)

I have the below code. What happens if the Upload method takes more than one minute for completion? Does the timer kick off another call to the Upload method immediately after one minute is over or Does it wait until the method finishes executing? I am implementing this as a windows service.

Protected Overrides Sub OnStart(ByVal args() As String)
Dim tmr As Timer = New Timer(New TimerCallback(AddressOf Upload), Nothing, 1000, 60000)

Stopping Multiple Timers - Stop Button To Stop Each Timer One At A Time

Feb 26, 2009

Alright, so I'm still working on the slot machine. I have three timers all independently going for my three "wheels" of the slot machine.

My issue, is that I'm trying to make a Stop button to stop each timer one at a time, and I'm not understanding why this code isn't working. The logic completely makes sense, and the first "wheel" stops when I click the button, however, it doesnt appear to stop the other two timers.

Stop Timer At A Random Time?

Dec 12, 2011

I'm working on a reaction time program where I'll be testing... well, reaction time of a user. For this program I'll need a timer to stop at a random time interval, say somewhere between 3 and 10 seconds. Anyone know of a technique to do this. I've done some research and it seems there are a bunch of different ways of generating a random number just not sure how to assign that number to a timer.

Program Freezes Over A Period Of Time (5sec)

Mar 15, 2011

Is there a way to code, so that if your program freezes over a period of time (5sec), it just stops trying to do it, and goto something else.

"On ERROR" wont work, since its not a error. "Try" doesnt work ether.

Its because I'm am programming something that can login to a router thought telnet, and sometimes the telnet ActiveX doesn't read the buffer or the line proberly, so when the .GetLine() func is called, it freezes. And i want away to goto another point if it keeps freezing for more than 5secounds. The telnet ActiveX that, I am using is Dimac w3sock.

Pause Program And Subsequent Code?

Oct 4, 2008

I am not sure how to make my program pause in the middle of execution, waiting for a certain period of time to pass BEFORE the next lines execute. I have already used System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(int) but this pauses the waits but still executes the subsequent code. If I were to:Private Sub Hello()System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(int)MessageBox.Show("Hello")End Sub* Time in milliseconds. This would NOT stop the execution of the MessageBox for int seconds, the program continues to run???How would I pause the code execution where I want, and for the time I want?

Forms - Timer Code - Add Time To The Counter

Feb 19, 2009

I'm currently writing a countdown timer on vb 2005, with the following characteristics: When I press a button and the timer is running, it adds time to the counter, for example, if the time is 2:30 and I press a button, and the period to add is 1:10, the new time would be 4:40. The window is always on top of every other window, and is active even though it doesn't have focus. When the time's up and i press a key, in this case Esc, the application closes, otherwise, it just continues. [Code]

VS 2008 - IDE Bug - Make Certain Forms Automatically Close After A Timeout Period

Sep 14, 2010

I caused the VB.NET2008 IDE to do something extremely odd and unintentional with some code I was writing. As some of you know, I mostly write programs for industrial equipment. On one of our products, I needed to make certain forms automatically close after a timeout period. To do this, I began programming a usercontrol with a Timer on it (interval = 1000) and a ProgressBar. Timer.Enabled was set to the Enabled event so I could toggle it. When the control counted to it's timeout period, it would call Me.ParentForm.Close

So I build my project, and drop it on a form in the IDE and I see it begins counting! Huh... I had no idea timers were active in the IDE. I wonder what happens when it hit's it's trigger? I figure probably nothing since Me.ParentForm was actually the designer. When it triggered, the whole IDE crashes without save. I tried it twice now. Here's my

Add Item To ListView While Continuing Other Code?

Jan 22, 2011

I have coded a low-level mouse hook. Each time the user clicks (let's say) the left mouse button, a custom event gets fired which is then handled by a form in my application. On the form is a ListView control with the following columns: Time - Application - Button.

I want that ListView to contain the last 1000 mouseclicks made, so each time the CustomMouseClickEvent gets fired, I check for the itemcount of the ListView, I add an item to the ListView and I resize all three columns. Problem is however that this extremely delays the processing of the mouseclick messages.

I'm wondering if it's possible to raise the CustomMouseClickEvent and then handle it in my application while at the same time the mouseclick message is passed on to the next hook to get processed by the systen?

Pause And Resume Timer?

Aug 15, 2011

I've been trying for about a month or so but been busy recently so couldn't address it then. Here is the code.

Public Class Form1
Dim CurrentTime As DateTime
Private Sub ButtonStart_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles ButtonStart.Click
ButtonStart.Enabled = False

[code]...

I know that even when the timer is disabled, it still keeps on accumulating so I need a way that when the timer is paused, the timer doesn't keep on accumulating and when the timer is resumed, the timer continues from where it was when it was paused.
