I ran into a situation where I have to compare an element in one array to the corresponding element in a separate array of the same size. I've tried using Google and search for the answer though all searches came up nothing I could use.

I have a VB.net console app and I am opening a function in a dll written in fortran. I am passing 3 arrays through the function by reference. When they come back out the otherside they ahve all tunred to arrays of only one element And that element is 0.I read on the internet somewhere that when doing this kind of thing it is a good idea to only pass the first element of the array into the function.I tried changing my function declaration to accepting single elements rather than single dimensional arrays, and now the arrays are the same length before and after the function call, but they don't seem to be changing at all, so i'm not sure that this is working

Instead, the last array element, is output three times.e workaround would be to dimension the array explicitly to hold four strings, but I used this contruct all over my VBA code and I'd rather know why it doesn't do what I expect.

I put all the data into lists and thought of using [URL] or string.contains but does not seem like it is working right. I'm developing a relatively quick-and-dirty approach to copying some files over. The situation is that I have a point on the network where a master directory is located. This directory includes the official directory structure as well as all official files. The user's local machine should have a place in their C:Program Files directory that has the exact same directory structure.
If it doesn't, the application should create it and copy files over based on the network master. If the user's local machine does have the appropriate folders in place, then any newer files found in the network master directory should be copied over to update the user's local files. It seems to me that this would require knowledge of the root directories up to the point of the network master and the same for the local directory.
At first glance, this looks to be a bit more complicated to accomplish than I was thinking it should be. Are there any shortcuts to using say the Directory/DirectoryInfo, File/FileInfo classes, etc that would allow this to be accomplished? I'm trying not to overcomplicate it as I need to get something out pretty quick. But the answer just doesn't seem to be showing itself.

View 10 RepliesI have a number of rewrite rules for a lot of things that I did in IIS7, like removing trailing slashes, canonnical URLs, lowercase lettering, and such. IIS altered my web.config, and everything works fine on the website, like it should. But in the Visual Studio web.config, the opening < rewrite > statement is underlined in blue, and at the bottom of VS, it says that the element 'system.webServer' has invalid child element 'rewrite'. But this is how IIS made it. I didn't do this manually. Should I be concerned with this VS error, or should I just leave as be, since it's working how it should work? I want to be able to reference an element in an array of structures by the name of the element in a visual basic 2010 function. For example

Is it possible to reference a structures element by the element's name in a similar way to that shown above. The code shown above does not work, as the expression obj(i).[elementName] does not work as hoped.
In VB6 I load a recordset containg all of the records (6 fields per record)in a table into an XArray and then manipulate the records in the array and then write them back to the original table. The array issorted by the first field (1 to maybe 8000 or more) I need to find records in the array by an ID field and then move them (because of some external criteria that happens many times) from say number 400 to number 375. Then all of the other records between 375 and 399 were renumbered up 1 to fill the gaps left by the move.
The XArray worked well as it could find and also move to a next record easily to facilitate the revisions to each record quickly. Everything is done in VB6 in code and nothing visual needs to be shown to the user until say 2000 of these external changes are complete. What is the best, most efficient way to do this in the .Net framework in VB2010. Datasets, Dataviews. tableadapters, arrays. enums ?

Basically I know that I need to use UDP to send the query and there is only one type of query I actually want to perform - an MX lookup. So I'm hoping that means I dont need to account for a lot of things that anyone creating a complete DNS Resolver would need to implement.
The only experience I have with network communication like this is with protocols that are text based (and use TCP, but I dont think that makes much difference here, if anything UDP should be easier). DNS however is binary based and I just cant figure out how I would know what bytes to send down the wire for a specific MX query..

View 2 RepliesI know .Net and C# pretty well, but never even looked at VB.My problem is: our Win32 COM library is used by a number of clients, and we see that the number of failures is higher for those who use the library from VB (both VB and VB.NET) than for those who use C++, C# or Delphi. One thing about our library is that it is supposed to be used from one thread only - can some threading magic by VB be the cause of failures?
Clients tell us the do not create any extra threads on their own.
