I have code to deal cards and compile a string list for player and dealer. I want to rank the cards for both player and dealer. I dont know how to compare characters in a string or text (which would give me a starting point).
My Code:
I am working on a poker game and I have the game setup the way I want it in terms of graphics and I have the code programed to deal the cards out exactly how I want them. Granted, the code is very simplistic, but functional for a new programmer like myself. I'm sure there are other more efficient ways to code my game, but I like mine so far because I can at least understand the majority of it. With that being said, here are a few problems and questions that I have.
1. How come when all 12 cards are dealt out I have some cards repeating in the game? For example, I get queen of diamonds in more than one picture box when I only want the card to be dealt once and then removed until the next game.
2. I was hoping to have a button 3 to clear all the boxes, basically resetting the game to the next game. When I hit button 3 it only clears the contents of picturebox 10 and 12.Other notes: I have the deal down the way I want it. It deals the first 10 picture boxes and a second button deals the 11 and 12 picture boxes.
3. I know this is my next step so I want to post it with the code I currently have. I want to start taking my project one step further by evalutating each of the three rows of cards (3 rows of 3 cards each - I'm not worried about the dealers hand (picture box 10, 11, 12 yet). So I want to evaluate a row of pictureboxes against a "pay scale" and display the win in a text box or label next to the 3 card hand. For example, Q of diamonds, Q of Clubs, Q of spades would win 15, etc. ( have a weird feeling I may have to change the names of the cards (I have them named card1, card2, etc. right now) to something that identifies them in order to evaluate the hands.

I've been using these boards for about a year now and I'm slowly making progress as I try to learn visual basic. My objective is to program a number of various video poker games. Many great people have helped me out in my process of learning this program, however, I still feel that I don't have a great handle on it just yet. I'm not coming in here asking for someone to do the work for me, however, I am asking if anyone out there has a very simplistic video poker game that they designed in visual basic that I could use as a reference to build my games from. Being a teacher, I realize how everyoeone learns differently, and I'm the type of person who learns best when I work backward. If I can see the end result and then work my way backwards I feel that I will have a much better understanding of how the entire process works. I've been trying to improve the efficiency of my giant program and I know that using a textbox to deal with a string is terribly inefficient.

What it does is convert a string of "1,2,3" into a collection of the 3 separate items for use later on.
Below is the code that we have been working on. We have bolded the parts which we are unsure about - they are producing errors. (its near the bottom)The program is designed to generate a random hand of cards out of our list of them. This program is a smaller version of what we hope to have in the full one - ie. It tries to get a random hand of 3 cards out of a possible 5.
The part we are having errors with is getting the images to display on each of the 3 'picturebox' objects using a loop (so we don't have to type each picturebox individually).

I'm trying to make a vb.net application that has got 2 textboxes, 7 radio buttons and 2 buttons(one named compile and the other 'run'). How can I load the content of a C/C++(or any programming language) file into the 1st textbox and on clicking the compile button, i should be able to show the errors or the C/C++ program in the 2nd textbox. On clicking Run, I should be able to show the output in the 2nd textbox. In short, I want to use the 2nd textbox as a terminal/console. The radio buttons are 4 selecting the language C or C++ or python or C# or java or perl or vb.Are the compilers of all these languages present in .net? If so how can I call them?

If I place the buttons in the same form, I'm able of keeping the focus on the control that have the box, by using:cvsDisplayControl.focus()
I tried to compile the control with this instruction within the code, but I got a errors since this the display control is not part of the one that has the buttons. Something that can help me is a way to assign tha name of the display control in runtime or read it from a file so the control can be compiled ok.
I've been building tools for ArcGIS. Part of ArcGIS is toolboxes which is basically a collection of tools bundled together. I know how to make toolboxes, but the code I have runs within Arc itself - ie. currently it only runs when you actually start Arc up and run a tool which makes the toolbox.
In theory the code should be able to run outside of Arc and ideally I want it to run at compile time. I know you can run executables as pre and post build events when building the installer so I was thinking I could make it build the toolbox as part of one of these. Catch is, the executable code would need to have access to the compiled files of my project (it needs a link to each tool to build the toolbox) so I can't make the executable in a seperate project. The current project is a class library. Is there a way to run code within my project when building the installer?
