VS 2005 Encrypt Connection String In ALL Copies Of App.Config File?
Jan 19, 2011I have a question about the App.Config file. My understanding is that the connection string is stored within this file. I have setup my application so that the App.Config file is not only written to c:users<username>appdatalocal but also to c:users<username>appdataoaming. I plan to encrypt the connection string, my question at this point is will it encrypt the connection string in ALL copies of the App.Config file? It looks like at this point that the App.Config file is stored in two places on the hard drive.

Mar 14, 2011I am trying to encryp web.confif using RsaProtectedConfigurationProvider.Everything works fine on my machine which is Windows XP. I know I am supposed to use "ASPNET" in following command for XP. My test server is WIndows server 2007 and following command gives me an error. "No mapping between account name and security IDs was done." I know ASPNET is not the default application pool on the server. What command should I use on the server?

VB 2008 App - Encrypt Database Connection String In App.Config
Sep 21, 2011I know this topic has been addressed a million times but please help me out. I have read so many articles on HOW TO encrypt and decrypt the app.config file but I need to know WHEN and WHERE I should encrypt it.
The problem arose because we found an AppName.exe.config file on a users computer and the database username and password was clearly visible. I understand that the .config file gets created during the VB app install process and is used
by the application. I then learned about the aspnet_regiis.exe tool and ran it on the app.config file inside my VB project. I am guessing that was the wrong thing to do.
When I now install the app on user desktops, it gives an error stating failed to decrypt the connection string. Also, when one of my other developers attempts to open the project in his copy of visual studio on his computer, he receives an error when trying to access the setting portion of the project properties. We store all of our projects on a file server and any developer can access the projects via a mapped drive on their computer.
So how am I supposed to encrypt the .config file. If I can't encrypt the App.config file in the development environment, then I'm guessing I have to perform the encryption on the users PC during the install process? How do I do that? Or is that what I am supposed to do?
Just for reference, here is the aspnet_regiis command I ran.
aspnet_regiis.exe -pef "connectionStrings" S:ProjectsDevelopmentVB.netPTPUSourceCodePTPU -prov "DataProtectionConfigurationProvider"
One last thing, maybe it's my misunderstanding of the issue but if this problem has existed since .Net 2.0, why has an option not been built into the development studio to encrypt connection strings?. This would seem to be a very common issue, even their own dataset wizard creates connection strings that are clearly readable.

Dec 23, 2011I ended up getting this properly working, as far as encrypting a file goes:How to encrypt and decrypt a file by using Visual Basic .NET or Visual Basic 2005 However, the catch is I have to change the name of the output file. What I was hoping to do is overwrite the original with the encrypted file, but when I tried that on a large file, it ended up only getting about 8 bytes of it.
Does anybody have any suggestions or recommendations? The overall idea is that I want to keep a file encrypted until it needs to be unencrypted for use by a program, but I'm not sure if there are better tools out there or if there's a better way of accomplishing this.
Question 2: I would really, really like to encrypt an entire folder, which I'm guessing would be faster than file by file, but when I try I keep getting access denied errors, even with DOS Cipher. Is there a way to do this with a key?

Apr 23, 2009I made a program that encrypts data and puts it on a txt file. There are two parts of information that need to be "linked" to the other. Say its Person 1, then Person 1 gender, they need to be placed together. Each encrypted piece of seperated by a ";". I have it read the file and place the information on a Rich Text Box. How can I read all the encrypted info and stop at ";" then place that into a variable then read the next bit? I did this a while back but I used StreamReader/StreamWrite and can't remember how I did it. Right now it reads through the open file dialog and writes it to the Text Box with this command writetext.LoadFile(sFilePath, RichTextBoxStreamType.PlainText)

I want to add a check box and have a label beside it that if it's checked it shows a hyperlink to a pdf file, if its not checked the link disappears, so toggle between the two.
Here's the check box I have so far, which isn't much:

C# - Read Entire File Content Asp.net?
Sep 1, 2010get the whole and same content of any file i uploaded, for my editing purposes in my editor w/c retrieves file from the database. i.e of files are ".doc and .txt"and by the way what i meant by same content is the whole same appearance of my .doc or .txt file i.e "if the text is bold, forecolor is red and etc.."
i successfully established a file upload and a function to store it in a database... but what i'm missing is the whole and same content of the file. Jul 31, 2009Using the Microsoft VB 2008 Express program, I'm making a SWd20 character sheet (D&D) to be distributed to a few friends. It's a program where the user can figure out stats, species, class, etc without having to make any calculations him/herself.. but this will all be in vain without saving it..
So I'd love to know how I could make it so the user can save and load the entire file(including buttons, labels, text boxes, menu strips, possibly multiple forms, etc) on his/her own computer.. Is this possible, and if so, how can I go about this?
I've already searched through and found lots on saving text in the files to .txt files, but that doesn't cover everything I need

Jul 2, 2010I'm having an issue with the streamreader. I had it working but I've changed something and it has stopped.
I have it in a Do While loop reading line by line, but it doesn't finish reading. It reads about 27 lines out of 4000, then stops.
I changed the contents of the file it was reading, but it's still just save as a txt notepad file.
I also changed how I tell it which file to open (UserSelection.T2) however it does open the file just doesn't finish reading it.
Doesn't kick back any errors, it just doesn't read the entire file.

Jan 13, 2009I have been successful in making an anti-hack program that uses a list from the local computer, this is at the moment a text file that can easily be modified, so my question is.Is there a way to replace this .txt file with a more secure format, one that cannot be decrypted (or is very hard to decrypt) without changing all my code?
the only thing i have to use the txt file for is adding the contained items to a listbox. Also, it would be possible for be to use SQL as i am using a dedicated server for the automatic update, so can use it as a remote library for the app the connect to.

Problem being, i do not want the user to be able to see what the HEX file is at any given time.Can the VB.net Cryptography crypt the HEX file before i put it onto the server and then decrypt it after the program downloads it from the server and runs it through the program without seeing the decrypted HEX file?Obviously the HEX file can not stay encrypted while being programmed to the ATTiny chip so how can i go about it so that i can create the original HEX file to be programmed within the program without having to worry about it writing a temporary file to the hard drive and then deleting it afterwards? (Because they could close the program after it does that temp file and they would be able to navigate and open it and see the code)
