I need some guidence to determine how to use DPAPI to encrypt passwords and server entries in the app.config. All examples I came across seem to refer to 3.5 and earlier, VS 2008, platforms. Does anyone have an example that will work for VS2010 in 4.0?
I have two windows vb.net form. I got a text file. I am trying to encrypt some data and save it to a text file with the 1st windows vb.net 2005 form. Now with the second one am trying to decrypt the data and retrieve it here.
I am trying to encryp web.confif using RsaProtectedConfigurationProvider.Everything works fine on my machine which is Windows XP. I know I am supposed to use "ASPNET" in following command for XP. My test server is WIndows server 2007 and following command gives me an error. "No mapping between account name and security IDs was done." I know ASPNET is not the default application pool on the server. What command should I use on the server?
I know this topic has been addressed a million times but please help me out. I have read so many articles on HOW TO encrypt and decrypt the app.config file but I need to know WHEN and WHERE I should encrypt it.
The problem arose because we found an AppName.exe.config file on a users computer and the database username and password was clearly visible. I understand that the .config file gets created during the VB app install process and is used by the application. I then learned about the aspnet_regiis.exe tool and ran it on the app.config file inside my VB project. I am guessing that was the wrong thing to do.
When I now install the app on user desktops, it gives an error stating failed to decrypt the connection string. Also, when one of my other developers attempts to open the project in his copy of visual studio on his computer, he receives an error when trying to access the setting portion of the project properties. We store all of our projects on a file server and any developer can access the projects via a mapped drive on their computer.
So how am I supposed to encrypt the .config file. If I can't encrypt the App.config file in the development environment, then I'm guessing I have to perform the encryption on the users PC during the install process? How do I do that? Or is that what I am supposed to do?
Just for reference, here is the aspnet_regiis command I ran.
One last thing, maybe it's my misunderstanding of the issue but if this problem has existed since .Net 2.0, why has an option not been built into the development studio to encrypt connection strings?. This would seem to be a very common issue, even their own dataset wizard creates connection strings that are clearly readable.
I have a question about the App.Config file. My understanding is that the connection string is stored within this file. I have setup my application so that the App.Config file is not only written to c:users<username>appdatalocal but also to c:users<username>appdataoaming. I plan to encrypt the connection string, my question at this point is will it encrypt the connection string in ALL copies of the App.Config file? It looks like at this point that the App.Config file is stored in two places on the hard drive.
I have tested my code in a windows form project and it works great. so now I want it to run as a service. The problem i have is referring to "name" in my configuration string which is in app.config.
Dim settings As ConnectionStringSettings = _ ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings(Name)
(Name) is under-squiggled and message name is not declared, file IO functionality is available in the microsoft.visualbasic namespace.
I ahve code which will encrypt and decrypt a file in widnows. now i want to implement my logic for a folder in windows. the folder may contain sub folders and numbe rof files.
I want to create a Windows app called encrypt.exe. This app doesn't have UI, just takes string and return a string. I want to call this app from other Windows app or from cmd. I am using Visual Studio, what kind of project should i create?
With a Windows form that I would like to be a DDE server. I know that DDE is not natively supported in VS 2010/11 so I'm using the NDde.dll to add DDE functionality to this program.
Objective: Create a windows form to act as a Pop-up notification that has a textbox field. This textbox field must be selectable in order for users to copy a text string to the clipboard and paste into another program that does not support DDE.
Overview: A phone system has an on-screen agent program that triggers a pop-up form, the DDE Server, when an incomming call is presented. When the agent accepts the call the agent program, acting as a DDE Client, registers a DDE session, Application=phnserver and Topic=callerid. Then communicates an "OnExecute" command to the DDE Server followed by a number string. This string should be presented on the pop-up form in a text box. Once the call is completed the agent application will issue a command to close the pop-up form.
I changed config file of the windows many times. Before changing config file I stopped the service and after changing config file, started again. Every thing worked fine.
But last time when I made some changes in config file of the windows service and started it - It didnt worked, I even tried reinstalling the service but in vain.
As a last resort I rebuild the service with new config file and copied newly build files on the server and installed the service. To my surprise the Windows service worked perfectly this time. But I have only made changes to config file and the code of the windows service was untouched. My question is, do we need to rebuild the Window service if we change the config file many time?
I am creating a windows service in VS2010, and in order to store a user's input during installation I've been told to write it to a file called app.config.However i cannot find this app.config file? Does it create one in a windows service project? or just in a WCF windows service project?
i'm doing a bifid cipher project now my code is almost finish.. the problem is every i put a space the space will disappear when I encrypt take a look at my code
I am after some code to encrypt/decrypt a file, with a feature to display theencryption/decryption process percentage. The following code works well for strings, but when I tried to use it on byte arrays, I get an out of memory error.
Public Function AESEncrypt(ByVal PlainText As String, ByVal Password As String, ByVal salt As String) Dim HashAlgorithm As String = "SHA1" 'Can be SHA1 or MD5
I am trying to do some x509 encryption and I am getting lost. I have generated my own self signed cert with OpenSSL, but am confused as to how to use my public key to encrypt.I found a few examples online, but in the first one, I do not see where you provide your cert or key for the encryption. url....The seccond is in C#, and although i can make sense of most of it, the line in particular tha tlooks important, but I can't translate to VB is this one: url....
The application sits on a virtual environment and when I remote in and run the application, it connects to the remote database. However, when I remote in with a service account and double click the same .exe, it tries to connect to the local host database and ignores the app.config. The code is the same, only the login name I use is different. The login I use is part of the local admin group. Any ideas?
I am trying to create an msi install for my windows service. The reason for creating an msi is that the intended users want to be able to quickly install the service with as-little intervention as possible.
i can get the service to install as a msi but i have a variable within my code that i need the user to define when the msi is being installed. the variable i require from the user is the file path which they want the xml files my service creates to be located.
i thought i could configure the app.config application settings to contain the file path that the xml files should be written to. However i'm struggling to do this and im not to sure if its the best way to do it?
I have my setup project that contains my executable and has my textbox which will contain the one variable from the user.I have an installer class which contains my serviceinstaller and process installer. This is where im struggling to understand what i need to do next. Do i need to override the install method? The current code of my installer class was automatically generated and is as follows:
Public Function AESEncrypt(ByVal PlainText As String, ByVal Password As String, ByVal salt As String) Dim HashAlgorithm As String = "SHA1" 'Can be SHA1 or MD5 Dim PasswordIterations As String = 2 Dim InitialVector As String = "CanEncryption123" 'This should be a string of 16 ASCII characters. Dim KeySize As Integer = 256 'Can be 128, 192, or 256. [Code] .....
What I am after is this: Rather than having a string to encrypt/decrypt, I have a byte array.
I'm attempting to create a little library to encrypt and decrypt Files with AES. There are loads of examples of how to do this on the internet so coding is not a problem. There are however a few questions regarding cryptography and AES in general.
#1 Does the IV need to be kept a secret like the key ? #2 Can I just hash a string with SHA512 to make a key for AES ? or do I need to use PasswordDeriveBytes ? #3 In the case of me using PasswordDeriveBytes Do I need to keep the salt a secret ?(or do I need to keep it at all) #4 Can I generate the IV from the same password that the Key is derived from ?(if so How ?)
I trying to create windows form in VB.NET 2010 but this trouble. The error saying :Error 1 'InitializeComponent' is not declared. It may be inaccessible due to its protection level.
I've one VB.net 1.1 based windows app. I recently added the app.config files. In code it works fine. But, when I compile the application, VS 2003 doesn't generate the appname.exe.config.(I read on google) I manually copied the app.config file to the Release folder. But the code is giving error that the file doesn't exists.
This sounds like a dumb question, but I'm using VS 2010 Express edition and cannot find where to add a new Windows form. The templates provided don't indicate a Windows form . Are they called something different in this version of VS?
