I have developed an application in VB.Net 2005 Express. This app was then transformed into a windows service using a template I found on this forum. I am able to install the service using InstallUtil.exe and I am very happy, BUT the powers that be me are asking for a more eligant method of installing / upgrading the service.
All of my reading suggests I need to upgrade to VS 2008 Enterprise to achieve this goal. Before I lash out and reach for my credit card, can someone confirm the minimum requirement to achieve a pretty service installation.

I currently have a windows service that is packaged up as an msi installer. However, during the installation i need the user to input their required filepath (to string) location. The filepath variable currently resides in my component class called MyNewService that is inherited from System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase.
Is there anyway i can allow the user to define the filepath variable during installation?

I'm writing a windows service (MacTimeFix.exe) to fix the Windows time on a Macintosh (it's like this: i live in Moscow (GMT+03:00), and Mac OS thinks that the system time is GMT+00:00 and adds 03:00 to it< and Windows thinks that system time is the local time).I need to execute my code when my VB app is closed. (it happens with the shutdown of Windows) The form is invisible (hidden), and the user mustn't click anything except windws shutdown button. It is a service. When i write a Form1_FormClosing sub, it works only on Alt+F4 or CloseButton and doesn't work when the app is stopped from Windows Task Manager or whatever also.I need a way to execute sub when app is closed with taskkill (without /force) or a way to execute a several app on Winshutdown.
Here is my code:
Public Class Form1
Dim SystemMary As String
Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load
SystemMary = Mid(TimeString, 1, 2)
[code].....

I changed config file of the windows many times. Before changing config file I stopped the service and after changing config file, started again. Every thing worked fine.
But last time when I made some changes in config file of the windows service and started it - It didnt worked, I even tried reinstalling the service but in vain.
As a last resort I rebuild the service with new config file and copied newly build files on the server and installed the service. To my surprise the Windows service worked perfectly this time. But I have only made changes to config file and the code of the windows service was untouched. My question is, do we need to rebuild the Window service if we change the config file many time?

I am creating a windows service in VS2010, and in order to store a user's input during installation I've been told to write it to a file called app.config.However i cannot find this app.config file? Does it create one in a windows service project? or just in a WCF windows service project?

I have tested my code in a windows form project and it works great. so now I want it to run as a service. The problem i have is referring to "name" in my configuration string which is in app.config.
Dim settings As ConnectionStringSettings = _
ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings(Name)
(Name) is under-squiggled and message name is not declared, file IO functionality is available in the microsoft.visualbasic namespace.

I've one VB.net 1.1 based windows app. I recently added the app.config files. In code it works fine. But, when I compile the application, VS 2003 doesn't generate the appname.exe.config.(I read on google) I manually copied the app.config file to the Release folder. But the code is giving error that the file doesn't exists.

I've installed a vb.net windows service on a Windows 2008 machine, that is attempting to connect to SQL 2005. The service starts succesfully, but can't see the database. The event log has the following entry. The description for Event ID 0 from source SU4.ESMR.DAL.Job.FillPriorityJobByType(oJobDS, TypeID: 3 cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

I new to .net My project involves developing a windows service application using VB .NET. I have installed the service successfuly on the first attempt using the installutil provided by the frame work. When i uninstalled the application the it gave me the following result.
System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: The specified service does not exist as an installed serviceAn exception occurred while uninstalling. This exception will be ignored and the uninstall will continue. However, the application might not be fully uninstalled after the uninstall is complete.
The uninstall has completed.
When i tried to install the app again it gave me the following error
An exception occurred during the Install phase.System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: The specified service already exists
I removed the application from the list of application event log entries in the registry(HKEYLOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesEventLogApplication) ant tried installing the app agin it installed successfully. Why is uninstalling the service not removing the entry from the registry.

I've developed a windows service that connects to a database and executes a Stored Procedure when running in debug mode I get the following message: "ContextSwitchDeadlock was detectedMessage: The CLR has been unable to transition from COM context 0x1ffc20 to COM context 0x1ffd90 for 60 seconds. The thread that owns the destinationcontext/apartment is most likely either doing a non pumping wait or processing a very long running operation without pumping Windows messages. This situation generally has a negative performance impact and may even lead to the application becoming non responsive or memory usage accumulating continually over time. To avoid this problem, all single threaded apartment (STA) threads should use pumping wait primitives (such as CoWaitForMultipleHandles) and routinely pump messages during long running operations."

i have a Windows service that is hosting a WCF service through net.tcp and this is working great. I have also created a WCF service application. I am trying to add the net.tcp service reference to the service application. Then I add it to the GAC that goes ok but if I try to RegAsm the WCF service application to allow it to be called from Server.CreateObject I get the error:
Warning: Type library exporter encountered a type that derives from a
generic class and is not marked as
[ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.None)]. Class interfaces cannot be
exposed for such types. Consider marking the type with
[ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.None)] and exposing an explicit
interface as the default interface to COM using the
ComDefaultInterface attribute.
It does not work. I have tried to call it through a class library but this does not work either as the end point is not set correctly.

I have created a VB application with some web references created at design time. The URL property of each is set to Dynamic which has created a string value in My.Settings and in the app.config file.
During testing and debug the application uses one set of web services and when live it needs to use a different set of web references with a different URL. I thought I'd be able to change the values for these URL's in the MyApplication.exe.config file once installed on the PC but the application still sees the URL which was used to create the web reference at design time.
I've searched forums and this should be the way it works but I can't understand why it isn't picking up the URL for the web service from the exe.config file once I have installed the application.
