As the title shows I'm trying to to read a random line from a RichTextBox. It should be as follows:
User loads a list with firstnames a RichTextBox. User loads a list with Lastnames in a RichTextBox. Then it needs to read one random line from firstNameBox and a random line from LastNameBox into 2 strings. When the user clicks on genarate name. A random First and last name will be showed in a textbox.
I have a Richtextbox with many lines. The data is as follow:
[Z=100, A=10, B=20, C=100]
[Z=100, A=33, B=50, C=255]
I want to split the lines to 3 new Richtextboxes, with the A, B and C values + the line number. Should maybe not be so hard, but I got stuck.
This code extracts the A, but obvious only the first line.

When you need to do random access to the lines of a text file, the regular solution is to put those lines in a list and access them in that list.But doing this if the text file is large creates a large memory overhead and may cause some memory stress on the application.This class maps the file and provide the ability to read any particular line in the file at a random position, without the need to read or put in memory any other line but the desired line. The only memory overhead involve is the 1024 bytes buffer of the base stream.Even if the file mapping can be a process that consume a noticable amount of time if the file is very large ( ~ 5 seconds for each 100,000,000 caracteres) , once the mapping is done the access to a particular line becomes instantaneous regardless of the size of the file. (The file mapping can always be done at a convenient time (ex when the process load) and can be done on a worker thread The class is base on a StreamReader to support the differents Text Encodings Example uf usage ( As I say, if the file is very large, dont do it like that, but declare the class at a convenient time)

i know that if i need to read all lines from a .txt file i write System.IO.File.ReadAllLines

We have a file to be read each time a code is run. Every 15minutes this file keeps growing by adding lines to its end.(Somebody does this beyond my control)
(My job:) Each hour I run the code, I need to read the new lines that are added to this file and store it into a database.
Usage:I am using the StringReader class in VB in which I am force to read the entire file atleast once(ReadLine) to reach the end.
Question:Is there a way in which I can Navigate to the end of the file and just read the last few lines each time?

I have this code now doing and that is creating my chart from data off a text file. The final task I need to be able to do, to complete my program is have a way to select how many days of data to populate my chats with via a Text Box input. I am thinking I will need to read the complete text file first to count how many lines are in it, then what ever is put in the text box it will take that many lines of data from the text file and populate the chart. For this to work correctly it would have to read the lines of the file back wards.(last line of file would be the first line..) e.g. textbox1.text = "7" then the chart would show only the last 7 lines of my data.
I was looking up examples of Counting the lines in the file, I think I am close here...

I am using vb 2010 and a windows form in my Web Browser project. In my favorites bar I need to be able to import my users favorites (that he may add) through a .txt file. I realize one way of doing this is creating multiple files stored in one master folder and reading the whole file of each which would contain the URL, but I would much rather have them all in one .txt file, but for that to happen i must read line by line from that file to import the favorites. I have 25 labels and have label name as followsword1,word2,word3,word4,word5 and so on up to word25. I want the word 1 label will show the first line of the text file and the second word2(label name) will show the second line of the textfile and so on up to the 25th line . For some reason my program does not execute beyond the Dim statement and instead displays the form without text in TextBox1.

Now if some user will change add or remove the data from this file, it will end up with error or sth. I also tried to write sth like this:

But there appears an error, that open is not declared and IO functionality is microsoft.visualbasic namespace. I added this name space (at the top: Imports Microsoft.VisualBasic), but this error still occurs.
I have a textfile I need to open and I need to put each line into the array. What is the simplest way to add the elements/each line's data into the array while increasing the array as it reads each line? This is blowing my mind right now..I thought about using a counter and then redim-ing the array (while preserving of course).
