Reading Data From Serial Port For Barcode Scanner
Aug 28, 2009I am developing a Winforms application which read barcode from barcode scanner. It's an Human wedge scanner. This will work if I placed the cursor in any textbox or notepad. But i don't want like that. Reason is that it's cordless scanner. If some want to scan some thing in store they will move around, so there is possibility of screen saver coming or system gets locked if that happens the barcodes wont capture, but the user who is scanning the barcodes won't know this thing.
So i am reading the data using serial port communication and my scanner sending the data character by character, Not a whole string. so for that I wrote the following code. Thsi code will works if i am writing to any textbox. But it is not working if want to store it in any global string. Only first character is storing in the string. The below code is working perfectly fine. but if want to save the string in Global String variable instaed of textbox the only first character in the string is storing.

Serial Port Barcode Scanner Delegate Sub Firing Twice Per Barcode Scan?

Grier's Enhanced Serial Port dll to read input from a serial port barcode scanner I notice that the datareceived event fires only once per barcode scan, but the delegate sub fires twice per barcode scan. Once for 1st half of Barcode , 2nd for 2nd part of barcode This makes it hard to capture the full barcode so it can be passed to routines in my vb.net 2008 windows application In Richard's example 'Test Enhanced Port' program he sends it to a textbox using .selectedtext and it works fine Richards Delegate code ......................

Jun 19, 2011im using vb 2008 to read serial port data. my requirement is as follows, when the data is received from the serial port a timer is enabling in order to blink a button saying "tank empty". so i have written the code with the aid of this forums. but now my problem is the blinking button function is not working. first i thought its cuz timer is not enabling inside the serial_dataReceived event. so i invoked a dummy label. so the timer works. but its blinking function is not working.

I have a quick question regarding the serial port and timer tick event. Basically i have a micro processor connected to the PC via the serial port. With a baurd rate of 38400 set.When the PC sends the micro ":K + VBCRLF" the micro response with a string of information (ASCII encoded) and delimited with a "," and at the end of the transmission a cartridge return line feed is added.Example of sent string:
"12,1134,123,545,76,6868,34,232,1,2,3,6,7,8" These numbers are then split using the VB mystring.split(",") function into an array of strings, then the numbers are converted using ctype. After which my UI is then updated.I have Witten the code in a tick timer event using a timer count of 300ms. Although the program runs and the UI is updated i end it with lots of exception errors. I think allot of this is down to the serial port either timing out or not reading complete string.Or possibly the timer has not executed all the code before another tick event happens Even after adding a few try catch statements i am still having problems. Can anybody suggest a better way of doing it?I was thinking of using a do while loop and at the end a sleep function instead of the timer tick event.I need the speed as i am trying to read and display live data.

May 22, 2009A few months back I wrote a VB.net console application to migrate a group of about 100+ printers and the 1800+ users that use them from some old HP print appliances to a mixed Print Server and Direct to IP Printing solutions. The application uses a database to compare installed printers and remove old/invalid shares and remap to the new Win2K3 based print server OR create a TCPIP printer port and install the driver for direct to IP printing.
It worked really well, but users needed power user rights to create the TCPIP printer port. For the main campus this wasn't an issue, but the smaller remote sites need a solution that allows the app to be run by users without power user rights.
My solution was to take the "CreatePrinterIPPort" function and put it into it's own wrapper app and then call it as needed from the main app using a hard coded local admin account for the purpose, but I'm running into issues when spawning the createport app. If I run the app standalone it creates the port with no issue, but when I run it in my test app to spawn the createport using the CreateProcessWithLogon API the port creation fails with an "access denied" error. I'm limited to using .net 1.1 as 2.0 isn't in our environment throughly and I was told it wouldn't be pushed just for this app.

Read SERIAL PORT In Vs2008?
Oct 27, 2010I working on modbus software. I am able to communicate with the modbus slave. The only problem with me is after i write the message on the serial port , i read the serial port for data after say 100ms and i use "system.threading.thread.sleep(100)". This freezes my program for a while. Can you please help me build the logic for reading the serial port after say n no. of seconds without using "system.threading.thread.sleep". I am new to vb.net. I am using .net 3.5sp1 and vs2008.
