Reading Text File Line By Line, With Resetting Position To Beginning Of File
Jun 23, 2011I'm reading a text file with StreamReader, line by line. If a condition is met, then I do an operation and then start reading the file again from the first line. I realize I could close and then re-open the file, but surely this would be very slow.
I could do this easily in VB6, but pulling my hair out trying to do this in vB.net. It seems that 'Seek' is the function to use, but it doesn't work.
I've seen other examples, where it works, but you must open it a different way -- with a file number.

Mar 5, 2009I'm making a program which has 7 textboxes. I intend the program to be used for classes in school, so the text would be like 2D Art, Geology etc... whatever your classes are. I have figured out how to use the streamwriter to take the text in the textboxes and write them to a .txt file however, my issue is with loading the text from the .txt file back into the textboxes. I did figure out how to write it so that all the text in the .txt file is loaded back into textbox1 but I have 7 textboxes... Here's the coding for the Load button:

What I want to be able to do is modify the words, one by one, so that I end with

Setting/Reading Specific Values Of A Richtextbox Line To An Array
Dec 7, 2009I have a button which reads a comma separated value file and loads it into a richtextbox. Each line contains comma separated chars.
Once the file is loaded in the richtextbox, i want to be able to select specific values from each line and store them into an array.
For example:
Line1: a,b,c,d,e
I want to be able to place only the values "b" and "c" into an array.
I was thinking something like creating a menu for the richtextbox which will be triggered on right click, then highlight the values I want, press right click and select 'place these values in an array'.
it doesn't have to be the way i proposed it, but it definitely must use a richtextbox.

Sep 20, 2010I'm trying to read an .rtf file one line at a time but I'm clearly missing something!The file contains 3 lines and I want each line to end-up in a different RichTextBox, so:
Open File
RichTextBox1 = 1st Line in File
RichTextBox2 = 2nd Line in File
RichTextBox3 = 3rd Line in File
Close File
What am I not understanding? I've tried using LoadFile to load the whole file into another RichTextBox first as I got the impression that RichTextBoxes are indexed - but what I got was strings not .rtf format. I've also looked to see if there's an equivalent of the text-centric ".ReadLine" and nothing seems to fit the bill.

I searched this issue online, and the consensus is to use an array, loop through for duplicates and create a new file. Dec 27, 2009I have an array called lines() which is basically an array indicating which lines to read from a file. for example lines(1) = 0 means 'read the first line from the file', lines(2) = 4 means 'read the 5th line from the file' (counting from 0 not 1) The program first reads the file (which has a lot of random lines) so it can identify which lines match my criteria. The way I store the line positions is this:
For i = 0 to noOfLines -1 'total num of lines in file
If count = match Then 'this is my match criteria
lines(x) = i 'store the line in the array

Reading In More Than One Variable From Each Line In A File?
Mar 1, 2010Trying to read in three variables per line from a text file that looks similar to the first code segment. What we've been taught so far to read in is something similar to the second segment. And it works all and good for single words per line.
If this was C++ I'm pretty sure I could getline and use the comma as a terminator, but I'm not sure if a similar function exists for VB.
