I have been learning VB for about 3 months now at college and decided to enhance my skills by making my own project at home. My project is basically a game where you have to guess if the next number will be higher or lower than the previous version and you can place bets on it. I have done all of this ok but I wanted to create a high score system so that you could save your score.I can manage to write out to a text file ok so that it looks like this
Highscores
Name
Score
[code]....
etc. But I am not sure on how to read in a specific line. So for example I want lblHighscore1.text to equal line 3 of the text document (as vb counts the first line as 0) So far all I have is this;
Dim objReader As IO.StreamReader = New IO.StreamReader("C:UsersKarlDesktopHighScore.t xt")
lblHighscore1.Text = (objReader.ReadLine)
i need the app to preview the line in textbox in timeintervalof 1 s (can be change)nd when it will reach to the end it close the text file and andreread it after let say 1 m ..

I'm currently use visual basic 2008. The problem is I have try this code but,it produce no output. There is no problem with the code I guess. Here is my code
Dim i As Integer = 0
Dim line As String
'Dim reader As StreamReader = New StreamReader("C:\drill.txt")

I am currently writing a Login Script, and I am having trouble making StreamReader read a specific line in a text file. This is what I have so far (not the entire script, just the reader lines):
Dim path As String = Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.ApplicationData)
Dim file As String = (path + "LogDat.txt")
Dim sr As New IO.StreamReader(file)
Dim line1 As String = sr.ReadLine(1) '' Supposed to read line 1
Dim line4 As String = sr.ReadLine(4) '' Supposed to read line 4
Dim line9 As String = sr.ReadLine(9) '' Supposed to read line 9
I have a button which reads a comma separated value file and loads it into a richtextbox. Each line contains comma separated chars.
Once the file is loaded in the richtextbox, i want to be able to select specific values from each line and store them into an array.
For example:
Line1: a,b,c,d,e
I want to be able to place only the values "b" and "c" into an array.
I was thinking something like creating a menu for the richtextbox which will be triggered on right click, then highlight the values I want, press right click and select 'place these values in an array'.
it doesn't have to be the way i proposed it, but it definitely must use a richtextbox.
i have one text box on my application with Multiline = True proeprty.how can i read its conternts line by line ??actually i need to print the text as it is apperaing in the text box (3 or 4 lines....)
when i use the command :e.Graphics.DrawString((textbox1.text), ENFont, Brushes.Black, 600.0F, 290.0F, string_format)
I have a richtextbox that I import 20 rows of data into. I apply a rule to the textbox that reads to identify keywords:
If Richtextbox1.Text.Contains(Printers(i)) Then
ClassifyTextBox.Text = "Printer - Jam"
The rule classifies it as a particular issue, with (i) representing a number of different

I have two textboxes. Each textbox contains lines, where each line contains comma separated values. When each line of a textbox does not match the number of comma separated values of the other textbox (ie if line 3 of textbox1 has 4 comma separated words and line 3 of textbox2 does not have 4 comma separated values) I want to highlight the line which does not match the other textbox's line.
This is what I got so far (and got stuck!)
For k = 0 To index
test1 = testA.Lines(k).Split(",")
test2 = testB.Lines(k).Split(",")

How do you change the text of a line in a textbox by integer?

View 1 RepliesI've been writing a weight program for flooded pressure vessels and I'm having trouble retrieving the data from the text files I've been saving. I know how to write the data to the text file, but retrieving it with OpenFileDialog is not so easy for me.The user has individual text boxes that they input strings or numbers into and when they save the file, each text box input is written to one line in the text file. For example, the first text box is for the username, therefore the first line of text that is saved is the person's name, the second text box is the customer, thus the second line in the text file is the customer name, and so on.
(Actually, the first line of text in the saved file designates whether English units were used or Metric units because when the user retrieves the saved file, English units will open one form and Metric units will open a separate form, so some If...Then statement will need to occur).I need to be able to read the first line, have either my "EnglishForm"form open or my "MetricForm" form open, and then have each subsequent line of text be displayed in their corresponding text boxes. I know I need to use ReadLine or LineInput, but I don't have a clue what to do.Assuming the syntax I've displayed below would just magically work (if only life were that easy), it would look something like this
If FirstLineOfTextInFile = "English" Then
EnglishForm.Show()
ElseIf FirstLineOfTextInFile = "Metric" Then[code]....
And so on...I read a lot of articles from the MSDN library and exhausted each link that I've looked through from Google and Bing, but most only retrieve data from the file to a single text box through some loop or streamreader and don't take into account multiple forms.
How would i go about reading a file Line by Line that within that line The values are delimited by " Example of the data:
"bob" "cat" "1243"
"steve" dog" "6789"
I've started this with this code but not sure how to go about the next stage:
Using MyReader As New _
Microsoft.VisualBasic.FileIO.TextFieldParser(My.Application.Info.DirectoryPath & "Records28112011.jd")
MyReader.TextFieldType = FileIO.FieldType.Delimited

Is there an easy way to consume xml to access any of the nodes directly without reading line by line?Here is a sample set of the xml working with. It contains two records of data. I am trying to find a way to load it so if I wanted to get say PostalCode and say Site SID value quickly.

I have a couple of VB6 programs which work 100%, however not under W7, so I need to upgrade them to Visual studio 2008 pro which I own a copy of.The VB6 software used to open a file, read in a line of data and process it then save it in a new file, before going on to the next line input.I need to convert this process to VS2008 pro and can't get my head around it..... getting old you see.I also have a few other needs to do with file handling, but I may be able to sort them myself if I get a start with the above problem....
View 17 RepliesI'm making a program which has 7 textboxes. I intend the program to be used for classes in school, so the text would be like 2D Art, Geology etc... whatever your classes are. I have figured out how to use the streamwriter to take the text in the textboxes and write them to a .txt file however, my issue is with loading the text from the .txt file back into the textboxes. I did figure out how to write it so that all the text in the .txt file is loaded back into textbox1 but I have 7 textboxes... Here's the coding for the Load button:

Basically, I'm creating an application which takes a list of words in .txt format, such like this:
Abc
Def
Ghi
Jkl
mno
What I want to be able to do is modify the words, one by one, so that I end with
Abc1
Def1
Ghi1
Jkl1
mno1
or whatever the user wants.
I created this app in C++ to get the logic, since I am more confident with that
I have a text file with thousands of entries of 11 digit numbers. With a button click I need to import the data into my form in a texybox, read the first entry, run an algorithm and place the result as a new line in another textbox. Then move to the second entry and so on.
I am able to read the data from the file and place into a textbox but I am having trouble with reading each entry line by line and running the algorithm.The algorithm that needs to be ran consists of reading each character one at a time for each line and is as follows:
ENTRY example: 12358458754
The characters 1,3,8,5,7,4 need to be summed then multiplied by 3. These are all the characters starting with the first character and skipping every other one. I will call them "odds" (not referring to numeric value)The characters that are skipped, I will call them "evens", need to be summed together then added to the result of the "odds" which were summed then multiplied by 3.The total result needs to then be divided by 10 and the remainder needs to be subtracted from 10. It should be something like this: (10 - ((sumOdds * 3) + sumEvens) mod 10))
I must use streamreader to read text file line by line into array.
Here's what I've got.
Private Sub Button2_Click(sender As Object, e As EventArgs) Handles Button2.Click
Dim numbers() As Double = New StreamReader(txtfile.Text)
Dim numbersarray() As Double

To read any form's text (except RichTextBox) line by line I've always used this splitting
Dim Lines() as String = Split(TextBox1.Text, vbNewLine)MsgBox(Lines(0))This code just works perfectly.But whenever I try this code on a RichTextBox like this:Dim Lines() as String = Split(RichTextBox1.Text, vbNewLine)MsgBox(Lines(0))The message box appears with the whole lines.I think maybe the RichTextBox1.Text() returns another new line character (means not vbNewLine).
the following code was to be entered to read each line of the file "line by line" It did not work for me as instructed and I am trying to understand why?
Private Sub Button2_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button2.Click
Dim FILE_NAME As String = "C:UsersOwnerDocuments est.txt"
Dim objReader As New System.IO.StreamReader(FILE_NAME)
Dim TextLine As String

i have write all this value in another text file by adding the title.in my original file's line i must check whether the line contain any MIL value if not, I must write first T1 the below T1 i must write all the line which not contain MIL value until i reach a line which Contain MIL value. If the line contain 39MIL the i must write first T5 then followed by all the line which contain 39MIL until it reach the line which contain another MIL value. Let say 50MIL. the i must write T7 then followed by all the line which contain 50MIL. I sort my original file alredy. so the original file will start from the line which dont have MIL to 39MIL,50MIL,75MIL and 100MIL. Mu output file will look like this

can somone just post a code of
1. Writing the last line of .txt into textbox1
2. Adding line from textbox to .txt
I'm storing a multi-line text file (in .dir format) in the directory the user chooses, and what I need to do, is when they import it (which my program can already do) I need it to find the end of the file (line) and then read that line, that line will be a number which corresponds with a number system. Basically, the file looks like this
1. Time: 10/27/2009 4:58:09 PM
Title: Title
Author: Author
Entry: Test
2The 2 at the end specifies what the number will be next time. How do I do this?
I have a data file which I am de-compressing and then reading line by line.This includes data which is then read by my function which is split into sperate bits then inserted into a database.My reader is currently taking ages. (largest file being 1.8GB)I am using:
Code:
' File exists, read file.
Dim objReader As New System.IO.StreamReader(fileName)[code]....
Is there a quicker way to do this? And possibly a progress bar to show how far it is through the file?
i got vb to read the text file but it reads the whole thing and displays it on a text line,how can i make it so it reads it like 1 line at a time after every click,so if my text file is like this
hello
goodbye
then i dont want it to display both, i want it to display hello and if i click a button again then it displays goodbye?
