I have just upgraded to Microsoft Visual Basis 2010 Express (Running on Vista and Microsoft Office Excel 2007). The last time I used VB was about 5 years ago and was v5.0 I am trying to do the very simple action of opening a spreadsheet using VB and reading in cell values into two text boxes (I am using an example posted on the web to ensure my approach is correct). The other questions that I've looked at were mostly to do with variables assigned incorrect types, but I think that isn't the issue. It occurs when all of the variables are empty.

I'm trying to use LINQ to XML to create an Excel spreadsheet. I created a template spreadsheet, exported it to XML, pasted the XML into my code and then began to edit it. When I try to create a set of XElements using LINQ, I get these errors:
The first squiggle under <Cell> says "attribute specifier is not a complete statement"
The second under ss says "'>' expected"
The third under Type says "'Type' is a type and cannot be used in an expression"
Ignore the error under "Lot 1..." I will be putting an expression hole there.
The squiggle under </Cell> says "Identifier expected".

I have a VB.Net program that reads in a flat file, and then parses line by line, formatting the data into different spreadsheets in an excel workbook (each line can be any 10+ different record types so I parse and put in appropriate excel sheet).
For smaller sized flat files (under 10mb), the parser works great. However, I am trying this on a file that is over 120mb (400k+ lines). While running, I will get an OleDBException saying that the spreadsheet is full. Now I am pretty confident that Excel can handle a much larger data set than a flat file. So I assume this exception is not giving me the true story as to what is really occuring.
I open a connection, and then parse each line in the file, inserting each row into the excel file. I assumed it would be bad performance wise to open/close the connection between each insert. Could this be causing the issue? Any ideas what I need to do to handle such a large file? There are cases where the flat file can be over 500mb.
To actually do the insert into excel, I am just doing the following (I construct an sql query based on the type of row and values parsed):

[Background]:I created a Winforms App that reads data and spits it out into an Excel Spreadsheet. On my computer, I have Microsoft Office 2003 and inside of the Visual Studio Project, I referenced COM Object "Microsoft Excel 11.0 Object Library". The Executable is on a shared directory and end users can run the application and generate the reports themselves.
[Problem]:Problems arise when an end user with Microsoft Office 2007 runs the application, generates the Excel Spreadsheet and sends it to someone with Microsoft Office 2003, the Excel Spreadsheet opens with the standard "this file is not in recognizable format" error and when you push "ok", the data shows up as symbols (garbled text).
[Question]When I reference "Microsoft Excel 11.0 Object Library" in my project, how does the .Net Framework (or my Application) find this COM Object object when it is ran from another CPU?I guess, I would like to know how references work. When you reference DLLs in a VS.Net project, compile the program and then put the execuable on another PC, how does VB.Net go about finding those DLLs you referenced or is it part of the compiled program?
I suspect when a user running MS Office 2007 runs my app, it is running a 2007 dll instead of a 2003 dll.However, I would think an error would be thrown if this was the case.

I'm having problems with an Invalid Cast Exception when I try and read a PDF from a database as a BLOB. I am able to write the files into the database no problems at all,however, when I try to retrieve them I just get InvalidCastException.Here is the code I'm using:

i am importing data from Excel workbook having around 30 sheets in each book. I am developing a fairly comprehensive Excel add-in, applying a lot of ops. Take a workbook, save under new name, apply actions (add names, change formulae, etc). Generally it works fine, but from time to time .Net throws an InvalidCastException on virtually any of my CTypes. When I acknowledge the error and run the code again (without quitting Excel) on the exact same Excel workbook, no error occurs. The InvalidCastException occurs maybe in 40% of all tries, otherwise the add-in succeeds.

My application uses a badly arranged Excel spreadsheet as a data source. I say badly designed because there's no unique identifier to each row aside from the column where dates and times are found. My app uses the date and time on each row as an identifier to retrieve information from the other columns in the row. The idea is that the user will select a date/time from a ListBox at which time, the app will loop through the DataSet and find the date/time in the right column and display the rest of the info in that row. My issue is that the ListBox control isn't being populated and I can't see why...

This basically works on a search where the user will specify a term to search for (be it a telephone number or (in this case) a telephone extension) and a date range. Now, I know for a fact that the spreadsheet (and thus, the DataSet) has information where the date column - column index 2 - falls within the date range I'm specifying and the column after that contains my search term, but I'm not getting any results.

I am trying to catch the System.InvalidCastException error. If I put a number into the calculator the program runs ok. If the calculate button is pressed with nothing in the text boxes I get the casting error Conversion from string "" to type 'Decimal' is not valid. I understand why I am getting the error. I don't know what to do about it. I want the program to dump null data and go back to waiting for input from the user.

ive got excel spreadsheets that i would like to open in my windows forms as part of my program,ive put an Axspreadsheet on my page but how do i open up an excel file into it. Looking at opening the whole of the data so all the worksheets and workbooks and what not. User only need to "look at it/browse it" so to speak.elimintate a problem wit hreading a writing issue to excel ive got, using different pcs and get and im not allowed to set up a "trusted area", so everytime i open the excel file itself i get an error saying cant use the "characters ! %&*<>
