Registry Edits And Icons / File Extensions

Inside the program I have a text box in which a user puts in the filepath to a textfile that the program then uses as a series of commands to perform tasks. This works perfectly, however what I would like to to do to make my program faster is associate the file extension .gam with the program, so when a user clicks a .gam file it opens the program and automatically sets said file's location into the text field, as opposed to using the browse button I added and browsing to said file everytime they run the program.
Through this a user could then make a shortcut to said .gam file and run it right from their desktop, as opposed to rummaging around in folders and whatnot. At the moment my method has been thus, I have 2 folders of importance I have archived with the .exe, Gambits Pro.exe, these are: Gambits, and Control, inside of the Gambits folder is the default storage location for .gam files, as when you click the browse button its default directory is that folder. I have also added a few example files in said folder for a user when they download the program.

TortoiseSVN and Dropbox both have Windows shell extensions that make file icons within Windows Explorer show a small icon beside the main one, showing the file's status - has it been synced, etc How can I make my application show icons beside files like that using the Windows API? Or is there some file attribute to do that?

Basically the problem i have is i have made a program that creates and installs a registry key which changes default drive icons etc.
But registry key directories need double backward slashes in the directories, e.g.
What i recieve;
C:exampleicon.ico
What i need;
C:\example\icon.ico
I was thinking sending the directory i recieve to another textbox and replacing '' with '\'. Is this possible?

I'm using the FileSaveAs dialog control to allow the user to select a filename to save a file either as a doc file, an rtf file or a pdf file (that part was easy).However, after a bit of testing, it seems that the file extension doesn't automatically change when selecting the different file types.If the filename in the dialog is Foo.doc and I select FileType *.pdf and click "Save", my app still tries to save the file as a doc type.Virtually every other MS app automatically changes the extension to match a selected file type from the Office Suite to Paint. here's my code:
Dim dlg As New SaveFileDialog
dlg.InitialDirectory = m_sReportFolder
dlg.FileName = sProjectName & ".docx"[code]......

the problem is I'm trying to access a file that has no file extension. I think you can see why this is so difficult. The specific file I'm trying to edit is the hosts file (C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts).

I get how to do it, and i have been to [URL] before. My question is about what doing that does, is it possible to reverse it? What if you do not know where your program will be, and you are just testing it for now? Is there any way for it to "find" your program, or an easy way to edit where it is opened? For that matter, is it possible to tell if the file has been associated already, is it an issue to try and reassociate? Finally, how can you set the .ico file it uses?

I am creating a program which can store files, and I display their names in a list box, with their contents in another list box. My program can read the file names but has the file extension ".txt" added to all of them, meaning that the program cannot read the contents. How can I remove ".txt" from them? [code]

How can I write this
Path = "C:"
For Each FoundFile In My.Computer.FileSystem.GetFiles(Path, FileIO.SearchOption.SearchTopLevelOnly, "FILE*.10") _
And For Each FoundFile In My.Computer.FileSystem.GetFiles(Path, FileIO.SearchOption.SearchTopLevelOnly, "FILE*.09")
'do code
Next My goal is simply to search for multiple file extensions. I cant use FILE* as my search parameter as this returns other files e.g FILE2012.10z which i don't want.

Instead of creating a listbox to hold the names of one's favorites, I've made it so when you add a bookmark it adds it under the directory (yourusername)/bookmarks. (yourusername) is represented by login.usernametextbox.text. Now I've added a filelistbox to the form and want it to display the contents of the bookmarks folder only without the file name extensions. Just the title. Then when a user clicks on the title it navigates to that specified file by opening a new instance of a browser form. Here's what I have so far:
Private Sub Bookmarks_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
bmarks.Path = Login.UsernameTextBox.Text + "ookmarks"
End Sub[code]....

Currently, I am try to get the email addresses that have been saved or stored by the user of the computer. This isn't the emails that the user has sent or received, or the contacts he/she has in his address book. Just simply the email accounts that have been accessed from the computer.I know that there are some locations stored in the registry that have the email account. The email addresses that are used on the current computer. I just can't seem to find them on my computer.I am not sure if the registry is the only place to find it or if it stored on the web browser such as internet explorer or google chrome.

I am writing an application that connects to a specific com port. This com port can change depending on how many physical ports are on the PC, and if other USB devices have installed com ports before this one.
I have the communication to the com port all working great, but I need to get the com port description not just the "COM#" which is all I currently get.
I found in the registry where the description is stored but am having trouble doing what I need.
In this key:
Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet001ControlClass{4D36E978-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
there is a varied number of sub keys. The are numbered 0000-NNNN depending on how many ports you have. Inside each of these keys, there are multiple values, although I am only interested in one or 2 of them.
My problem is, that I do not know how to get a list of the subkeys (the 0000-NNNN keys/folders) from the original key I posted. I have looked through a few registry tutorials, and I can view the default value in the listed key, but I could not find how to list the subkeys of the listed key.
Does anyone have any sample code they could share that shows how I can get a listing of subkeys, and then run through those subkeys checking for a specific value in one of the strings contained in the subkey?
I am using VB.net 2008 and Windows XP.

I just bet the answer to this question already exists, however I saw no search mechanism under the forum. Anyhow, I would like to change registry data, and this code is asking for an instance to the object.
Dim RegKey As RegistryKey = My.Computer.Registry.LocalMachine.OpenSubKey("HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwa reAnyDWGSoftwareDWGtoPDFProSettings", True)
RegKey.SetValue("OutputPDFFileOpt", 1)
Finally, I want to apply this setting to the program on four different computers (local, and three others on the network).

how to make a program save, open, or create new but now I have some other add-ons I want to add.I am not sure I can do this but how can I set default files like Text documents to open when I double click one without the error message saying that it's not a valid Win32 program? Also how can I make multiple fonts on a document? Same with color so I can bold some parts and not all, and making the program open itself when I click new for another copy without losing work and when you click close and there is unsaved data it asks if you want to save it. I've always had to use a program that does this stuff for me, but I'd like to just make my own program that does this. I've already got the individual bitmap images of the 3 sizes (16x16, 32x32 and 48x48) for the icon file and I usually find use some shareware program to create the icon file from the multiple bitmap images for me but I'm wondering if it's possible in .Net to create an icon file (*.ico) that contains multiple physical icons in it.

I've tried using the method in the link below, but unfortunately this only works with .exe files. I want to be able to display icons from all filetypes in picturebox's.

So I was wondering if maybe there's a quick edit I can do in the method above to make it work, or even a completely different way of doing it?
