SQL Update Statement - DBNull Error With Replace?
Apr 22, 2012
I am creating a form that is able to update data in SQL server after selecting an MS Access file (.mdb). I am having an issue where the data has a single quote ('). I found out that the solution was to use Replace() - to replace the single quote with two single quotes - Replace(string, "'", "''").Now, for some reason, I am getting an error "Conversion from type DBNull to type String is not valid." Here is the code.
cmd = New SqlCommand("Update Child Set " & _
"TopLevelProject = '" & row("TopLevelProject") & "' ," & _
[code].....

So I'm importing Excel data using ADO into a DataTable then pushing out to an Access DB. A couple of the Excel columns have several blank cells that I would like to change to a zero before pushing it out. How can I check/change the DT null values to zero? I've done some searching but was wondering if I could do it without a loop.

A concurrency violation error? It happens on this statement:
CODE:
It thinks I'm using a key value of 1 when the actual value is really 1218. I'm using a command builder. The attachments show the value of the key value and the value of the update text values. By the way, I can insert data but not update it.

In this example, an error is raised if either row.FirstName or row.LastName are NULL.
How do I rewrite the Select clause, to convert a DBNull value to a blank string ""?
Dim query = From row As myDataSet.myDataRow in myDataSet.Tables("MyData") _
Select row.FirstName, row.LastName
NOTE: Since the DataSet is strongly-typed. I can use row.isFirstNameNull(), but IIF(row.isFirstNameNull(), "", row.FirstName) will not work since all parameters are referenced.

I am trying to work programmatically with a dataset. The tableAdapter was created by dragging and dropping the dataset on my form, and then deleting the binding navigator and dataviewgrid. The problem I am having is when I am trying to delete a record that is DBNull. The dataset.delete( ) call creates fields for each of the fields, along with their data type (say Description as String). but I get an error whenever the field has a DBNull value.
CourseTableAdapter.Delete(DBDataSet.Course.Item(1).CourseID, DBDataSet.Course.Item(1).CourseDescription)
The error is Throw New Global.System.Data.StrongTypingException("The value for column 'Description' in table 'Course' is DBNull."I do have Option Strict On, but the problem exists even if I turn it off.

I am using VISUAL BASIC 2010, SQL Server 2008. I need to update a Table with SQlDbType Varbinary. Just for sake of Murphy loving me I gave it Varbinary(100) - while max. field lenght is 20 Non Ascii Characters on the UI Side.User is changing data in a form, data gets encrypted (into a Byte Array) then sent to the BL of the program, the business logic talks to SQL Server and fields in the Table are updated nicely with new binary values.
A problem arises however with a field that is allowed NULL values in the data table. I can retrieve NULL values from the Database and assign them the "Nothing" value. (User Interface shows a nice blank field). Once the user however changes that empty field(containing "Nothing" as value) with any data then my cmdSql.ExecuteNonquery reports no changes. (rowsaffected = 0)
I strongly suspect that I am making a mistake in the parameters of the SQlCommand of the OldFullname value, but as I said I am staring myself blind. Please review my code below and tell me where I am making that mistake...
FYI: OldFullname can't be "Nothing", and its current field is SQL NULL. All fields (except UserId) are Varbinary. Update succeeds as long as OldFullname SQL field contains data - only not when it is NULL. I don't want to set a standard value on the column (NULL or such).

Syntax error (missing operator) in query expression '''system time'''.this is the error that appears
this is my code:
Dim sqlCmd As String
Dim x As Date
x = Format(Now(), "General Date")
[code].....
the fields in the tables are all text fields.is there any way to fix this error? perhaps it is in my query but i really cant find a solution.is there an alternative to get what i want my program to do?it is basically entering an ID number and finding the record with the same idnumber and putting the system time on the timein field for that record.
