Safest Way To Check For Integer?

This is probally more of an elegance question than functionality. I am looking for the absolutely safest way to check for an integer from a string and an object,
Using most of the built in functions for this in .net seem to generate a first chance exception, displayed in the Immediate window, and over time they just build up. what are the implications of these exceptions as they don't seem to affect the operation of the system.
Here are my two attempts, both feel clunky and I know there has to be a better way than using VB.IsDBNull and Integer.TryParse... Or am I just being anal.[code]....

I am doing a project.."Some Password". the criteria is that the password should have 1 numeric and 1 non numeric and atleast 6 characters. The code I worked on..(below)

i'm starting to learn VB, i've wrote a few little programs following the books and internet resources, so far so good until now, i have to check a range of double integers(e.g. 170-50) if the left integer is == 170 and the right integer is == to 50 then you profit.i have to do this about 200 times but i just need a litow to get started, i've searched for about 4 hrs and read for about 5 and still nothing.

Basically, when you set an Integer to "Nothing" it seems to equal the same value as if you were to set it to 0. So, in a function that returns an Integer how can I return something that will show that the function failed? In most cases I would use -1 or something but in this case I need to allow for negative values too.
Here's some more detailed information: I'm using the GetValue method of the Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey class to read a numeric value from the registry. The GetValue method has an optional argument that you can pass in that specifies what should be returned if the value did not exist, normally I would use Nothing but in this case because I am storing the returned value in an Integer then it is just the same as if the GetValue method returned 0 (which is a valid value in this case).

ive got some simple problem i cant understand how to solve.
str(1) is an array and integer(or double, tried both)
a(1) is an array and integer (or double, tried both)
a(1) = a(1) + 1
Label1.Text = str(1) + a
the big part is where i get: operator '+' is not defined for types 'integer' and '1-dimensional array of integer'.why do i get that message and what does it mean? how do i make the code do what i want?

I'm trying to create a linked list of an array of integers. Why is the following implicit conversion required?
When I run the code that contains that conversion, I get the following error.
As a real-time data acquisition user control data (a packet of an array of bytes) arrives every second, is converted into an integer array and inserted into a linked list.
The most recently arrived data is painted as coordinates on a grid at the right of a PictureBox using Graphics.DrawLine (pen,X1,Y1,X2,Y2).
The oldest data (arriving 120 seconds ago) will be drawn at the leftmost portion of the Picturebox.
Why a linked list rather than a list? To display 120 views of time sequence data, the draw routine the most recently inserted node to a node that points to Nothing. How do I limit the length of the linked list to 120 nodes and always ensure that the last node points to Nothing?

I have a LINQ2Entity problem, I want to get the value, string, from a database, so I select FProducts.Serial_number, and to end the query, I do .ToDictionary. The problem is, it tells me that it doesn't have sufficient parameters, to convert ToDictionary. So I need something like select FProducts.Serial_number, Nothing). ToDictionary. After reading the forum I was able to append .First() to noPic at the myNoPic declaration and finally get a result but that only gave me the first element. I'm just writing a bit of code to compare an id of integer with an id of integer? for example:
Dim id As Integer = 1
Dim nullId As Integer? = Nothing
Dim areEqual As Boolean
areEqual = nullId = id
When I try to compile the code I get a compiler error: Option Strict On disallows implicit conversions from 'Boolean?' to 'Boolean'. Whilst it's very simple for me to work around this, I was hoping that someone might be able to explain what's going in the compiler to give this warning.

This is my problem.I have a field set up in MS Access to Boolean YES/NO, this field is populated when the user check a checkbox on a windows form. If the user check a checkbox, the value is written as checked in the data field (MS Access).The problem is when I search for the user information, I need the information from the Data base to populate(return) to the windows form.
