Im new to VB and am working on a program for work using functionality to replace the use of hyperterminal and excel macros to dump data from a plc to a spreadsheet. I have the program setup and dumping the data to a rich text field, but this is about as far as my experience will let me go. So here are my questions:
1. Im wondering if it would be possible to use the text parsing method to sort the data into fields by first using a comma to delimit the fields and then tab (not sure how to put it as a character) to start a new line. this will then be displayed in a data grid view and later form there dumped to an excel file. i was also looking at the serial port functionality to see if it could parse too, what would be the best way to go about this?
2. I also need to be able to open more than one instance of my program and load connection settings into it (like what can be done with hyperterminal). Im wondering if it would be possible to use the save dialog to allow the user to save the settings to a file and open the settings file when launching any given instance?
I would provide my code but I made it so complicated I don't really want to show it. I want to start over.I would like to create the most simple way to begin parsing the text file below beginning with the line - 1, EVENT parsing this comma delimited portion.I would like to

I almost have this text editor/Stopwatch/Calculator program done. I am having mojor difficulties to get this code for Save and for Save As to work properly. I do not have code for save yet. When I click on Save I want it to save without popping up the dialog box. I do not have code for Save yet. When I click on Save As I want the popup box to show. Here is the code I have for Save As:
I have this Quiz software that lets you create online multiple choice quizzes which are great for studying (I am in grad school and I'm trying to use everything I can to learn). So the Quiz software is great but it only lets you input questions by hand, one by one. I took a look at the .xml file that the quiz program spits out and came up with the idea to try and make a converter so that I can import many questions at once. I was hoping to try and solve this limitation by doing the following:
Take a .doc that say a tutor gives us with a bunch of practice questions, and then take that into Crimson Editor, and then format it so the question is on line 1, the multiple choice answers are on lines 3,4,5, and 6, (for the next question, the question would be on line 11, and the answers on lines 13, 14, 15, and 16, and so on) and then take that saved .txt file into my program, hit the generate button, and it will spit out the .xml file, and then import that into the quiz software to generate the online quiz.

I figured out how to open a text file by watching simple youtube tutorials, but I don't know how to have it generate the stuff and have it show up in the bottom text box. I know how to do the coding to convert the txt to proper xml code but I don't know how to be able to save the contents of the bottom text window to an xml file.
When I run my program and save my file and name it "Ed's doc". It saves fine. But the title still says untitled, I would like it to say Ed's doc in this example.This is the code I have for my SaveAs button:

I have AutoDragDrop enabled in my textbox. It drags the .jpg file into my program successfully. When I save it only saves the text not the .jpg file. I do realize that when I save the file I need to have the .jpg saved also and I am not sure how to accomplish this. I have checked multiple forums and googled of course. No luck as of yet.
I picked vb.net for this question since it's the only prgramming language I am fairly familair with, but if C++ or something else is more suited for this, I am willing to learn something new.What I am trying to do is:Retrieve text from database (this already works in vb.net) and copy it to clipboard Switch primary screen to the external application I want to work with (example: word or open office) Emulate key-press "Enter" Paste text and hit enter again Emulate key-press CTRL and then emulate a click on a pre-defined spot on the screen (like 500pixels from left, 740pixels from top). Its a League Organizer, basicly ive started it off with 16 teams and end up with 1(winner) 16 box's on the far left, then 8, then 4, then 2, then 1. the 16 box's have "Team 1" "Team 2" etc... ive put a new/clear/open/save button in that order.
BUT this is my problem..when i save(Save Button) the text file saves all the text wrong it ends up like this...Team 1Team 2Team 3Team 4 Etc...
But i want it to save like this
Team 1 Team 2 Team 3 Team 4 Etc...

I am attempting to parse multiple lines of text from a text file using regexpressions. I am using vb.net with visual studio 2008. At the moment I am filling my datatable with the text file information and am able to return each line of text and parse the first set of numbers that I am attempting to break up. I have multiple string with varying lengths of character lengths and numeric lengths however the delimiters are sometimes different. Sometimes will be whitespace and sometimes will be whitespace and chars. But is always 2 spaces. Here is my code:

I'm toying with an idea that would require me to parse a text file that contains a SQL statement. (i.e. Select * From Customers) I would like to be able to programmatically via Visual Basic identify key words, table names, comment lines, etc.So, how do compilers handle such a task? How does a SQL database handle such a task? All of the parsing tools are for CSV files with some sort of consistent delimiter. I'm wondering if I need to read the file one character at a time and then do some sort of comparison.

I'm a PHP/MySQL/HTML guy, but in the course of my work, I sometimes have to delve into Gatesland.I am working in VS2005 developing reports, and occasionally I have to write some custom code. This code is in (I believe) VB.NET. I avoid this as much as possible. It is my belief that if you have to use custom code in a report, you're doing something wrong with the DB, or with your query.Now, my boss (for reasons unknown) is storing data in the database as HTML. See, the developer did this so that he could just read in a field, and dump it straight out to an echo/print statement when forming up the HTML. Unfortunately for me (the report developer), HTML shows up as verbose text if I dump it out as a field in a text field in a VS2005. So, I need to strip out he HTML tags, and replace them with appropriate values.

I'm trying to parse a text file. First I plan on extrcating each line, then extracting each field by searching for a tasb.When I use InStr to search for a (return for end of line) or (for tab) I always get a zero.
