I've set up buttons with the Save Dialog and Open Dialog in Visual Basic 2010, but It doesn't really do anything when I save, and there's nothing there when I try to open. I didn't actually put any code in the dialogs or anything. Basically, I just want to beable to have an option in my VB2010 text adventure game for the user to save his/her progress.

I'm designing a choice based adventure game in VB.NET 2010, where you are presented with a story label, and you choose between 2 buttons, which choice you want to make. I want to know the most efficient way to do this.My goals are to store the labels for the buttons and the story in some form of data structure, which is temporarily a hash table right now, and some form of structure for the choices. Right now I am using a custom class that references the indexes of the next 2 choices and their respective label indexes which stores the class instances in a hashtable.I've looked into things like arrays, dictionaries, lists, and collections, but I'm not sure which one best fits what I'm after. Any .NET data structure would work. What is the most efficient data structure for these 2 pieces of data? Would just a string array work?
View 2 RepliesIts a League Organizer, basicly ive started it off with 16 teams and end up with 1(winner) 16 box's on the far left, then 8, then 4, then 2, then 1. the 16 box's have "Team 1" "Team 2" etc... ive put a new/clear/open/save button in that order.
BUT this is my problem..when i save(Save Button) the text file saves all the text wrong it ends up like this...Team 1Team 2Team 3Team 4 Etc...
But i want it to save like this
Team 1
Team 2
Team 3
Team 4
Etc...

I'm not sure if this is the right forum or not for this, but I'll post here until I hear otherwise. This had really become a problem for me and I can't seem to find an answer. A lot of my programs will export data to excel. When the wokbook is saved it will popup a save dialog box with a progress bar and a cancel button. The problem is the dialog box loves to steal focus. This causes a problem when for instance right now it is modifying several work books and when I'm typing I could end up hitting the space bar when the dialog box steals the focus and it will cancel the save. Is there some way to prevent the dialog from showing?
For an example this is some quick code I threw together. I have several workbooks that have more data than I need to archive. So it goes into each one and deletes those excess rows. The workbooks are in 2003 format, but I'm running 2007.

I am trying to read a text file into a text box, and show the progress bar loading. Sometimes if the text file is big, i don't know when it will finish reading it. This is basically the code i use to read a text file, but i don't know how to show the progress bar.

so i have a quite huge program. but lets say i have one label. and i want to save that. i have the code and everything for saving the text of the label. now i want to assign ctrl+s to automatically save the labels text once pressed instead of going through a menu to choose save.this is like a regular texteditor where u press ctrl+s and it saves.

I need the progress bar to represent the position of the cursor in a document. I also need the program's loaded text to highlight letter by letter at a user defined rate and that position be indicated by the document. This is for a personal application to assist me with a learning experiment.

Since they each take so long, I'd like to update the user on the status bar as each of these stored procedures is called successfully. I guess that I should preface this by saying that I am totally new to VB, but I come from the PHP/MySQL world so I can work my way through things syntactically. That being said, I have made a program that expedites a few things that I do on a routine basis at my place of work. However, because I have no idea what I'm really doing, my app logs up while the UI thread does all the background work.
What I am trying to accomplish, is a few things. I have a filesystemwatcher which place files in a queue when they are created. From the queue the files are further processed (xml into SQL database).
The mechanism works fine, but I want to add a progress bar to follow the progress of the files in the queue: processing 1 of 10......2 of 10......3 of 10 etc.For testing, I created a batch file to simulate the creation of files, so the filesystemwatcher can to his work and place the files in the queue. When I tell the batchfile to simulate the creation of 20 files, I see that the amount of files in the queue change. For example;

In the app I'm currently making, I have two progress bars. One for current task being committed and the other is for overall progress.During runtime, I calculate how many tasks are being run and set that as the maximum. As each task completes, the progress bar is incremented by one.
I want the current task progress bar to show the progress of the current task. Some tasks can take a few minutes to complete so that progress bar works great. But, if the task is super quick, like editing registry keys, I see no progress at all.When I edit the registry, it basically goes like this:

It completes so quickly that I never see the bar even move.I also have each task report its name into a label and it skips ahead so quickly that I only see the first task name and the last.Is there any way to make this do a better job at reporting the progress?
I came across a problem in my program it takes too long to calculate the values needed (about 10 sec) .But thats not the problem you don't know when the program is working or not, as it just locks up until its finshed and I view that as a problem.
I need to be able to show the progress of this .I looked at using background Workers but I get exception "Object reference not set to an instance" I believe this is because the background worker cannot write values or something ,As it works will a normal handler.
