Send Ascii Data Contained In A String In Hex Format?
Jun 18, 2011
If we have a string that contains for example "01_1A" in ascii, I would like to take first two chars and following two chars after mark and send it as hex format, like &H1 and &H1A.
Note that I would not convert ascii to hex. I am asking for something like &H(var).

I have data that has to be collected from my database and sent to a supplier's edi system. The file has to be in ascii format so their system can read it. I am writing what I see as an ascii format file but they say it's in edibc format when they receive it. I am posting my code and hopefully somebody here can help me out. Funny thing is that I have done this before successfully and am using virtually the same code but to no avail!!
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Dim filed As String = "Y"
' get records to be transmitted and plop them into an array list
Dim con As VICSClaimDAO = New VICSClaimDAOSQL()

I'm working on decoding a NMEA sentence that is a compressed 8-bit string. I'm having a very hard time of wrapping my head around the bit manipulation needed to convert this string. If someone could get me started with this it would be great.
Here is the incomming string:
!AIVDM,1,1,,A,14eG;o@034o8sd<L9i:a;WF>062D,0*7D
and here is the expected output:

I am trying to make a simple program to convert ascii in its code format
Example: Chr(53) & Chr(53) & Chr(54) & Chr(100) & Chr(52)
to a readable format. I understand that this can be easily accomplished by writing in the ascii code into the code will do it but I am trying to create a more interactive method of doing it so I can copy and paste a long length of code into a textbox and have it update a label with the conversion.

I need to create a Digital terrain model from ESRI ASCII grid format into an array. First I need to use the column and row values (from the header information) to read into my file to specify which values to put into the array. I think i have to use both counters simultaneously, and although Ive read in the first line (columns) I can't get the next line in. Do I have to use a counter under a different name, and can I do it in a nested loop?

I have a function that is getting passed a String and a DataRow.The String is a custom formatter. The idea is to do this
String.Format(passed_in_String, DataRow("ColumnINeed"))
The reason this is being done is at this point we have no idea what the column contains. However, if the formatter is "{0:MM/dd/yyyy}" and the DataRow("ColumnINeed") is an integer containing 42, String.Format is returning: MM/dd/yyyy In this situation I need it to throw an exception instead of returning nonsense. Is there anyway to make String.Format throw an exception if the object does not match what the format string is expecting?

I am trying to check if a users input contains any special characters from a list, does anyone know who I would go about doing this?
I've tried the LIKE operator:
Dim sMatch As Boolean = tTitle.Text Like "[-/,.:;*?""""<>|&'[]^%£$()_+=!#]"
but doesn't seem to work, i think special characters are used for settings.
Is there a RegEx i could use for this??

i knew Serial ports are a type of computer interface that complies with the RS-232 standard. They are 9-pin connectors that relay information, incoming or outgoing, one byte at a time. Each byte is broken up into a series of eight bits, hence the term serial port. And I want to write a program chatting through Serial Port.

I am having a bit of trouble converting a single stored in a string as four hex values. I believe my problem stems from some Unicode hex values not matching the corresponding ASCII hex value above 0x7F (127). For example, I have the following single stored in a string; "518.42" or 0x44019AE1. The char that would contain 0x9A if the data type were ASCII contains U+0161 which will not convert properly to a byte array. My question is: Is there any way to force a string to be of ASCII rather than Unicode? Or maybe there are other recommendations? For reference I have tried both of the following. The first throws a format exception and the second converts to the wrong single.
Private Function ConvertHexToSingle(ByVal hexValue As String) As Single
Try
Dim iInputIndex As Integer = 0
Dim iOutputIndex As Integer = 0
[code].....

I've tried searching for this, but most people just want to convert hex values into their ASCII equivalents. That's not what I am looking to do.I'm looking to see if VB.NET has a simple built-in function to do this:
Private Function NibbleToString(ByVal Nibble As Byte) As String
Dim retval As String = String.Empty
Select Case Nibble[code]....
Is there a more elegant way to accomplish the same thing as that code?

I am making a simple application that will be able to store competition data into a text file that I have given a custom extension to on saving. Here is an example of the format that i have saved the data in.
[Comp_Name]Test Competition[Comp_Name]
[Location]Silverwood Lurgan[Location]
[Type]Teams[Type][code].....
When i open the file, i want to redisplay the data in separate text boxes. Later on in the project i want to be able to search within the file for headings for example;
if "[Heat1]" is present then get all text between [Heat1] and [Heat1]
i am currently able to use the streamreader and open file dialog to retrieve the entire string of text fromthe however i am not sure how to go about getting the text between the headings I have used.

So I need a format string to pass to String.Format that would "move" the decimal point.I can't perform any math operations before doing the String.Format, so it has to work right off the bat.Basically I'm emulating a formatting string from a proprietary server. In it if I say:
"MR2"
for the value:
12345
The result is:
123.45
I'm close with this, but it's not spot on:
String.Format("{0:#0.##}", 12345)
an extra, but not necessary... there is also MR2Z, which moves the decimal 2 left, but if the value is 0 "" is returned.

I'm trying to convert an ASCII String to hex for VB 2008. So far I have this :
Code:
Function asc2hex(ByVal StrName As String) As String
Dim loopCount As Integer, strHold As String
For loopCount = 1 To Len(StrName)
strHold = strHold & Hex(Asc(Mid(StrName, loopCount, 1)))
Next loopCount
asc2hex = MsgBox(strHold)
End Function
However, It is not reporting all the bytes that it should be. For example: This is the correct format.

I have tried all of the encodings in the System.Text.Encoding package with no luck. I thought I had it with UTF7 but it was dropping other characters like replacing the + sign with a space.

I have lines of text that contain "degree symbols" (ASCII(248)). I want to replace those symbols with an alphabet character (Z).I am changing the line of text into a charArray, iterating through one character at a time. How do I define the ASCII(248) in code to replace each occurence with a Z? Something like string.Replace(ASCII(248), "Z") would be nice, but that doesn't seem to work too well.
