Class With Dynamic Arrays Inside Another Class Which Also Has Dynamic Arrays?
Nov 15, 2011Below you will find a code sample that I have dummied up to try and demonstrate the issue I am having. However, this is just a dummied up piece of code. The actual program has noting to do with STUDENTS or TEACHERS. Basically, the problem I'm having is trying to have a CLASS within another CLASS each of which contain ARRAYS that need to be dynamic in size. The sample has a CLASS called STUDENTS that can have in theory many students, the number of which are unknown to the CLASS. I need to be able to add STUDENTS to the ARRAY programmatically.
The CLASSROOM Class should also be an Array since each TEACHER will have MANY Students. There will be only 1 Teacher for a given classroom but the SCHOOL will have MANY CLASSROOMS. Again, I need to programmatically add Teachers and Students without having predefined Array sizes. The code I have listed below will NOT work but it demonstrates what I am trying to achieve. I want to be able to reference the CLASS by using something like this ...

I feel like I should be able to use ARRAYLIST in both classes but haven't been able to get it to work. I've tried DIM'ing as ARRAY and can't get that to work either.If I can get ARRAYLIST to work then I shouldn't need to worry about expanding the array via UBOUND (if it's even possible).The REAL question is "How do I have a CLASS within a CLASS, each of which has ARRAYS that need to be dynamic in nature so they can be expanded as needed? The size of the array cannot be determined ahead of time".
REMEMBER . . . the actual program has nothing to do with Students and Teachers. This was just my way of demonstrating the issue using an analogy that I thought everyone could understand. The actual Class is much more involved.I have purposely hardcoded some values just to make the sample easier to work with. This is NOT how I normally program but is just here to hopefully make things a little more clear.

Using Arrays In A Class
May 22, 2010This section of code is part of a much larger program.However, I can't seem to find the problem with this error.Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.[code]I'm using this array inside of a class form to maintain the memory of a computer player in a rock, paper, scissors game. There are two computer players involved; thus, the need for a unique instance of each array for each player.I'm struggling with this program and all of my errors are gone until I try to run the main form.I can link more code if needed.

What Class For Serializable Multidimensional Arrays
Feb 19, 2009EDIT: SI have a web service which uses a class of functions in order to return data used in various business processes (via InfoPath). One of the functions takes a given SQLCommand object and executes it into a SQLDataReader. Now depending on the SQL command text used this may return one or many rows of one or many columns. So what is the best class for this function to return bearing in mind it needs to be serialized by the web service.

Class Property Arrays Not Holding/ Updating Values
Oct 1, 2011I am trying to use several Class arrays to hold values that I will cycle through at a later point to perform some calculations. I need to change the array sizes to fit the data as it is entered. I am using one procedure to set the first element of each array and then a separate procedure to pass the additional values as they are entered.
Until my last attempt at changing my code, my StartBalance sub seemed to work, I could step through and see the values assigned to the class arrays in the code block. However, when it moved on to the Transaction sub, it did not recognize that the first set of values were set, the array shows zero values for index 1.
I have gone through several changes trying different ideas from reading blogs and articles, but I guess I am not understanding how these work. I even used the class arrays directly instead of the Property procedures to see if I would get a different result, but I do not.
I believe I must be approaching this incorrectly and though I can find dozens of examples of setting class variables and even a couple on using arrays as class variable, I can not find any that show how to then pass values to those arrays.

Making Sprite Class And Cycling Through Image Arrays
Feb 2, 2012I am using vb.net by the way. From what I understand, Xna is not usable in visual Basic. Therefore, in order to create my characters, I defined a sprite class. Now my question is.... (I am drawing everything using a timer on the form btw by the process of invalidation.)... how do I use time to cycle through the images in an image array while the instance has no focus, and whilst the class inherits the "Control" class? Basically, how do i get these instances to act without user input? I want a character to eventually respond to user input, but I also need npcs that do not need any input in order to move themselves. Also, I need this in such a way that each instance's processes do NOT interfere with the processes of others. So that whatever timing I use does not also stall the whole window/form.

May 9, 2010In VB6 I load a recordset containg all of the records (6 fields per record)in a table into an XArray and then manipulate the records in the array and then write them back to the original table. The array issorted by the first field (1 to maybe 8000 or more) I need to find records in the array by an ID field and then move them (because of some external criteria that happens many times) from say number 400 to number 375. Then all of the other records between 375 and 399 were renumbered up 1 to fill the gaps left by the move.
The XArray worked well as it could find and also move to a next record easily to facilitate the revisions to each record quickly. Everything is done in VB6 in code and nothing visual needs to be shown to the user until say 2000 of these external changes are complete. What is the best, most efficient way to do this in the .Net framework in VB2010. Datasets, Dataviews. tableadapters, arrays. enums ?

Passing Arrays Through Fortran Dll From App Turning To Single Element Arrays?
Feb 2, 2010I have a VB.net console app and I am opening a function in a dll written in fortran. I am passing 3 arrays through the function by reference. When they come back out the otherside they ahve all tunred to arrays of only one element And that element is 0.I read on the internet somewhere that when doing this kind of thing it is a good idea to only pass the first element of the array into the function.I tried changing my function declaration to accepting single elements rather than single dimensional arrays, and now the arrays are the same length before and after the function call, but they don't seem to be changing at all, so i'm not sure that this is working

And someone had helped me make a class for Visual C# that was supposed to do the math parts for "internal structure" - which the program used for a part of its calculations and screen... Basically there were 2 options. Endo-Steel and Standard. The user would use a updownbox to determine weight of the machine and then internal structure was a % of that total. If it was standard then it was 10% of the overall weight, if it was Endo-Steel then it was 50% of standard (so 5% of total weight) rounded to next 0.5 (so .25 was .5, 1.25 was 1.5, 1.75 was 2.0, etc). I have the code for the C# class file for it, but want to make it in VB.

The result:Application runs, no errors or exceptions.Displayed is the listbox and the Start button.I press the start button and a msgbox says "Not Invoked" as expected and upon clicking OK to that msgbox "Start Button Pressed" is added to the Output listbox control.Immediately following that the msgbox pops up again and says "Not Invoked". I was expecting "Invoked" as a separate thread is trying to use the Output listbox control.Of course this results in the Output.Items.Add being attempted which results in no visible result as the thread is not allowed to directly update the UI control.

I am currently working to transform my code from using Windows API calls to access the INI to using a IniFile class that I found on the internet. I would like the BsfciFile to have a Array of StudyFlashCard objects, but I would like the StudyFlashCard class to use the IniFile class object contained in the BsfciFile class. I can pass the IniFile from the BsfciFile class to the constructor for the StudyFlashCard class, but I want it to modify the same IniFile as the BsfciFile class has later on.

Apr 22, 2012Base class has one field to hold numeric balance value. With 2 methods that accept arguments for adding and subtracting the new input calculating new balance. Sub class has four fields dates, transaction, memo and amount.I have a deposit form, and withdraw form. Each time one transaction is entered it creates an object with sub class fields, then adds to the account collection. My problem is not understanding how to call the deposit/withdraw method and pass the current transaction amount back to the base class to alculate the new balance. Does anyone have any links to information/tutorials on how to perform something like this? As you can see with my code I have tried various different approaches without any success.

May 8, 2012Create a class named Service. Inside the Service class, declare a class variable named Started. The datatype of this variable is Boolean.Public Class Service Dim started as Boolean End Class Create a class named Server. Inside the Server class, declare a dynamic array that can contain elements of the type Service.(Note: For convenience, both the array and the variable Started can be accessible from a client program that creates an instance of Server and Service respectively)
Create a constructor for the Service class. When the constructor is executed, it will set the value of the class variable Started to True. Create two new classes: WebServer and DatabaseEngine. Both of these classes inherit from the class Service. Inside the Service class, declare a Sub procedure (method) named Terminate. This method should display the following text Service stopping in a message box when executed.This method can be overridden in classes that inherit from Service class.
Inside both the WebServer and DatabaseEngine class, override the method Terminate inherited from their base class Service. Both methods should first call the base class Terminate method. The messages Web server stopping and Database engine stopping should also be displayed in a message box when the Terminate method for the WebServer and DatabaseEngine are called respectively. These messages should only be displayed if the Started variable inherited from their base class is not equal to False.
Inside the Server class, declare a method named Shutdown. This method does not return any value. When executed, it will call the Terminate method for each of the Service instances (if any) in the arrServices
array. You should call the Terminate method within a For Each loop that loops through the elements of the arrServices array.
In the Sub Main method, create an instance of the class Server. Set the size of the arrServices array in
your Server instance to contain 2 elements. Create first a WebServer instance and then a DatabaseEngine
instance into this array. Call the Shutdown method from your Server instance.
