Shared Events In Child Classes
Jul 7, 2011
I have a program with a base class and classes that inherit the base. A Windows Form will call a function of each child class which raises an event from the base class. The function call to the first child class works fine: the event is raised for the first child class.

[code]Now how do i do this in c#. I know there is not handles clause in c# so i need some function that is called and assign the event handlers there. However since its a shared class there is no constructor i must put it somewhere outside of a function.

At the moment I'm trying to create a kind of model in vb.net which can be used to create/fetch database entrys.
I created a main class Model with a shared function to fetch the datasets, e.g. Model.find(). Now I'd like to create Classes which inherit the main Model-Class, e.g. a separate one for users: UserModel.find() => "SELECT * FROM users".
What I need now is to find a way to tell the Class which table it should use. I thought about an abstract String "table" which is a constant in each "child-model", but how could this be implemented as it's not possible to override shared members?
Edit: Maybe this will make it a little clearer what I mean:
Public Class Model
Public Shared _controller As Controller
Public Shared table As String
[Code].....
So I want a shared method which finds all database entries and gives back an array of instances of its own type, e.g. Model(). That's why I wanted to keep the find-method shared and not bound to an instance.

is there a difference between shared events and non-shared events?
Private Shared Event EVENT_something_changed()
Private Sub SUB_handles_something_changed() Handles Me.EVENT_something_changed
End Sub
no errors with this code, but how is Me possible since the Event is shared. it seems like there's no errors between switching shared with un-shared and switching Me with Myclass, all 4 combinations seem to work, isn't that weird

Currently, I have a solution that contains two projects (ASP.net websites, FWIW). If I create a class in Project1, how do I expose it to Project2? Is it automatically available to Project2 because they are in the same solution? Or do I need to do something special to make the connection?

I'm writing a WCF-Service and I split up my service class to multiple partial class files, so every ServiceContract-Implementation gets its own file. I have one file however that should contain e.g. members that are used by every partial class file such as a logger. The service is hosted with IIS 7 if this matters in any way.
[Code]....
The code compiles fine, but at runtime I get an BC30451: The name m_Log is not declared Error (Don't know the exact words for it. I get a german message ;) ). I don't think it has something to do with the type of m_Log or a depending assembly because I get the same error if i try this with a String. What am I doing wrong? How can I make this work? Edit: I was trying the same thing in a simple console application without any problems. :(

I have a base class with several derived classes. I want all of my derived classes to have the same Public Shared (static) method with their own implementation. How do I do this? Is it even possible?

If I have a 'Shared' object defined in the App_Code folder; is that object shared amongst all users/visitors of my website? Or is it shared on a per-user basis?I don't know if that makes sense or not; but I've got a puzzle/solver I'd written earlier that I'm trying to incorporate into a simple ASP.Net site. It's probably poorly written, but I'd used a Shared boolean to determine if a solution had been found. The code works, now as an ASP.NET site, but if two visitors to my site were both validating their puzzle at the same time, would they both be accessing the same boolean?

is there anyway we could extend a shared function for a class? example:
<Extension()> Public Shared Function GetName(ByRef e As [Enum], ByVal value As Object) As String
Return [Enum].GetName(e.GetType, value)
[Code].....
however i dun hav a choice as Extension methods can be declared only within modules

Is it considered an acceptable practice to use Modules instead of Classes with Shared member functions in VB.Net?I tend to avoid Modules, because they feel like left over remains from VB6 and don't really seem to fit in anymore. On the other hand, there doesn't seem to be much difference between using a Module and a Class with only Shared members.

I have a nested class, let's call it class1 and it has class2 inside it; VB.Net eg:[code]
1) How can I define X number of Class2 objects[let's call it: Node(x) array]** with NEW() subroutine called?' this raises error: dim cls2(n) as new class2 end sub.
2) How can I return actual number of Node() array? [code]Outside my class in main project I define cls1 object:[code]Now an array of class2 is created inside cls1.
3) Now,How can I access All of them[node(x) array which is created inside cls1] with all properties and methods available?
I remember I wrote a ProcessManager class with this functionality in .net 2003, nearly 4 years age, I don't have the code now.

I've read that modules are basically shared classes. For a module though, you can call a method directly without prefixing the module name. So I can do this: methodTest("abc", mod1Enum.enum2)But for a class with shared members I have to fully qualify the method call, and in this case fully qualify the enum:[code]In our conversion from VB6 to .NET the need to fully qualify all calls like this might be an argument for us to bring our VB6 modules over as modules instead of converting them to classes.

I find that I write a lot of code within my classes to keep properties in sync with each other. I've read about Events in Classes, but have not been able to wrap my head around how to make them work for what I'm looking for.For example, in this one I always want to keep myColor up to date with any change whatsoever in any or all of the Red, Green or Blue properties.
Class myColors
Private Property Red As Byte
Private Property Green As Byte
[code]....
If one or more of those changes, I want myColor to be updated. Easy enough as above, but is there a way to work with events that would automatically do this so I don't have to put myColor = Color.FromArgb(Red, Green, Blue) in every sub routine?

I have an interface that i have declared some of the basic internal functions, subs, properties, etc. This interface is then implemented into 3 pre-defined classes. These classes are end-use classes so they dont get derived or inherited elsewhere. I am trying to create a generic shared class that can operate on each of these 3 predefined classes and potentially more as long as they implement the interface.

When the month changes in the calender control I need to raise an event in daycontrol to update any holidays. In the calendar control I have the following code for the event:
Friend Event MonthChanged()
Public Sub New()
' This call is required by the Windows Form Designer.

I'd like to be able to log to the console every time an event is fired either in the object I've instantiated or in anything it's instantiated [ad infinitum]. I wouldn't see some of these events normally due to them being consumed further down the chain). Ideally I would be able to log all public and private events but if only public are possible, I can live with that.
I've Googled and all I can find is how to monitor a directory - So I'm not sure if this is not possible or simply has a name that I don't know.
The sort of information I'm after is similar to what's found in an exception - Target Site, Source, Stack Trace, etc...
Could I perhaps do this through reflection somehow?
To Give you an idea of the console App:
Sub Main()
Container = ContainerGenerate.GenerateContainer()
Dim TemplateID As New Guid("5959b961-b347-46bc-b1b6-cba311304f43")

There is a popup window which is rendered using xslt (no aspx page) on click of button, during this window load and close events I need to manipulate the text exist in the textarea of popup window. Having said I need to store the list words (key,value) for validation and spell check so I just declared a dictionary/hashtable object in common class (globals.vb) where i could store (add and retain values until I click close window, there could be couple of in turn calls to other methods of popup window) and manipulate as expected but whenever I reset the dictionary/hashtable (objDic.clear()) on popup load and close, it resets the concurrent users dictionary also.
Note :
1.Dictionary is declared as Public in Public Module (Globals.vb).
2.Dictionary manipulation happens inside the shared method (that is in turn calls to shared method of popup events).

Surprised this question has not been asked yet here, but here goes: Serialization in VB.NET is a bit of a pain. If you use the standard Serializable() attribute, and attempt to serialize a class that has events which are attached to handlers, it will attempt to serialize the handlers as well. Coming from a C# background I am not used to dealing with this problem, and the best solution I can find is using a class off of CodeProject.

Raising events in multithreaded classes?
I am running a class(gamepad handler) that uses many child threads to check for key input and the like then it raises events to my form to sort out the needed reaction, Is there a way to make the event raises on the same thread as the class itself.

I have a Clients master object and then a number of child objects whose exact number is not known in advance such as Client-Contacts, Client-Payments etc, all of which have a one-to-many relationship with the Client master object.How do I define classes for such a scenario? Do I for instance create the master Clients class and can then I create an array of class somehow for child objects?

I have two Parser classes that inherit from a base class, BaseParser. I want to use either class as a parameter in another Monitor class. The Parser classes, CS600 and TCH600, both have two properties, RawDataList and SummaryDataList. The CS600 class's RawDataList returns a List(of CS600Data); the TCH600 RawDataList returns a List(of TCH600Data). The SummaryDataList returns similar classes in each Parser class. CS600Data and TCH600Data derive from a base class, BaseData.BaseParser also has RawDataList (List(of BaseData)) and SummaryDataList (List(of BaseSummaryData))The Monitor class has a private field, _thisParser which can be either of the two concrete Parsers above. I want to be able to call and use RawDataList and SummaryDataList of _thisParser within Monitor class, but when I construct the concrete Parser classes, Visual Studio notes that the RawDataList property of CS600 cannot override the RawDataList property of the BaseParser because they differ in their return types.
I thought that since CS600Data derived from BaseData (but also adds some new properties of its own) that I could use CS600Data wherever I use BaseData. What am I misunderstanding? How can I correctly construct these classes?
Public MustInherit Class BaseParser
Protected _rawDataList As List(Of RawGasData.BaseData)
Public MustOverride ReadOnly Property RawDataList() As List(Of RawGasData.BaseData)

When attempting to create a UserControl type that must be inherited, when I try to edit one of its child classes in the Form Designer, I am not allowed to edit the child UserControl with the message:
To prevent possible data loss before loading the designer, the following errors must be resolved:
1 Error
The designer must create an instance of type "XX_ExpandContentsPanel2.IOCardMaster", but it cannot because the type is declared as abstract.
This error goes away if I remove the "MustInherit" restriction.Is there some way around this or do I just have to accept the (bonkers-mad) restriction, and not declare my class as as MustInherit, even though it's not a useful control in its own right?

I have a user control and a panel on it in Dock fill format. Now this is exposed for the user to add on the form. Till this point fine. Now the user sees lot of events for the user control, which I want to actually link up with the panel on the usercontrol, because that is where I want things to happen . Is there any solution to link up the events in few lines of code than calling each event separately? I am also looking to expose only few events than all the base control events.
