Call Dispose With Regions?

Jun 22, 2011

When you set a region equal to another, or set it equal to a new instance, do you have to call dispose on the region, or does VB do that? (I guess this isn't necessarily specific to regions)

ex:

'at some point in the code a region is created
Dim Rgn as New Region(SomeRect)
'....

[Code].....

If Rgn now points to the Rgns(0) clone, what happens to the original memory created by "New Region(SomeRect)"? Do I need to call dispose on Rgn before assigning it to the the Rgns(0) clone?

VS 2008 Call Dispose On Brushes?

Sep 16, 2009

In my Zeal to get with the "Dispose" program, I implement a dispose pattern (still learning the ways and means of THAT) wherever it seems to make sense.I THINK I have the basic idea. However, I notice that, while Drawing.Brushes HAVE a Dispose method, when I call it, some sort of instability is created in Visual Studio itself, and i get the dreaded "Visual Studio has encountered an error and needs to close" splash screen, with no useable error information. SHould I assume that one should just NOT call dispose on Brush objects, or is there something I am missing here: [code]

Call '.dispose' On Objects Inside Functions?

Jul 22, 2010

say you have a sub containing an io.streamwriter. That streamwriter is declared and used only inside that sub (and not as static). Should you still call dispose on that streamwriter or is it disposed automatically as it is no longer in use after that sub, until you call that sub again?

Call Dispose On All Items Delcalred And Used Within A Procedural Scope?

Aug 31, 2009

I am having trouble understanding the proper implementation of Dispose. While I totally understand the IDEA behind it (Ensuring that variable references to objects are released and free to be GC'd), I am not sure I am doing this properly.I try to call dispose on all items delcalred and used within a procedural scope when I am done with them (or even better, employ a Using block). When I declare Class-level items, I assume I should call dispose on them prior to destroying the class (During the "Disposed" event, right? which will occur when "Dispose" is called on my class?).As Declared in Class-level Declarations:

Public Class MyDisposableClass
Implements IDisposable
Protected mImgExpand As Image = My.Resources.ListCollapsePNG9x9_DK[code]........

When THIS class is instantiated within another class (Say, a form),I call "Dispose" on THie instance of this class during the form's "Close" Event. Everything seems to work fine. However, when I step through the code, things seem to go in a circle. We go from the close event, which calls dispose on the class instance, to the class instance dispose event, then back to the parent class disposed event, etc.

My question is, How can you call a function with 2 arguments when the function is only defined for one. I understand that the second argument is actually a method that handling the respons, but how can you interchange function arguments for methods and how do you know that there are methods for

Call A Function From Inside Another And Suspend It Until The Called Function Is Finished

Jan 25, 2010

How can I call a function from inside another function and suspend the calling function until the called function is finished? I hope I can get some replies because I don't know how to ask the question and make sense:).

Anyway what I am trying to do in steps:

1. The user clicks button1 which triggers the click event.
2. From the click event I call a function
3. I then pop-up a form, that has instructions for the user to read.
4. After the user has read the form he will click the "Done" button and return to the calling function.

The problem is the the calling function continues to execute. I want to stop execution of the calling function until the users clicks the "Done" button on the instruction pop=up. I know I can use a msgbox but the instructions can be lengthly and does not look good in a msgbox.

I have tried the Call method with return in the "Done" button click but I can make that work. I also tried a goto statement but I can get that to work either. In the call statement I said call frmInstruction.show() and it got there but as I said the calling function continued to execute.

Threaded Function Call Slower Than Calling Function Directly?

Sep 14, 2010

I have a function where I am performing a lot number of database operations inside a Sub. The operation when called directly like:ExecProcess()

takes about 11 seconds to run. However, if I create a Delegate, and call the sub using BeginInvoke(), the very same process takes over 40 seconds to execute. Here's the threaded code:

Protected del As ProcessDelegate
Protected Delegate Sub ProcessDelegate()
del = New ProcessDelegate(AddressOf SELocal.ExecJob)
Dim cb As New AsyncCallback(AddressOf Me.ExecJobComplete)
del.BeginInvoke(cb, del)

Anyone know what may cause a function to take longer inside a new thread, rather than calling directly?

Override A Function And Call A Function With The Same Name From The Grandparent Superclass?

Sep 6, 2010

I am attempting to inherit an ASP.NET RegularExpressionValidator and add some functionality to it. I inherited the control and added my custom properties. However, I would also like the client-side functionality to call a different JavaScript function.

In order to do that, I will need to supress what is happening in the AddAttributesToRender method because the name of the function is hard-coded there. Here is what comes up in Reflector for the AddAttributesToRender function in RegularExpressionValidator:

[Code]...

Note: I tried to add the expando property before the parent class does to see if the code would check for its existence and skip it, but that just causes an exception.

Return An (Anonymous Type With A Function) From A Function?

Mar 3, 2011

Just so it's known, this question is mostly academic, even though I tried to use the concept in a real-world solution. I realize the example is contrived, but I believe the concept is valid.I want to write some fluent code like this:

[code]...

I realize that I can't force an anonymous type into a specific type (like implementing an interface or some other class), and I don't want the overhead of defining a specific class just to match my desired fluent name with the actual method name. So I was able to make the code work like this:

copy(my_first_file).to.Invoke(my_second_file)So there is no IntelliSense or type awareness there, and I have to include the Invoke in order to have the method run. How can I get more type safety and exclude the Invoke method, under these constraints: Anonymous Type returned from Method No additional classes or interfaces Preferably, I do not want to pass in another parameter to the copy() method that tells what type to return, unless copy becomes a generic method (but I think that means defining another class/interface, which I don't want to do)

VS 2005 - Return Value From Asynchronous Web Service Call

Aug 13, 2009

I'm using ASMX web services in VB.Net in VS 2005. I am calling a function method on the web service that returns a true or false value. This works fine if I call the the web method synchronously, but if I want to call the method asynchronously, the function returns to a sub and there is no return value; therefore, I can't tell whether the result of call is true or false. Is there a way to make an asynchronous call and still get the true or false result (perhaps using the userState Object)?

For Example:
Dim MyResult as Boolean = MyService.GetResult(10)
Dim MyResult as Boolean = MyServer.GetResultAsync(10)
This doesn't work the compiler complains: "Expression Does Not Produce a Value"
