Use Linq ToDictionary To Return A Dictionary With Multiple Values In The Dictionary Items?

Jan 25, 2010

I want to group items from a linq query under a header, so that for each header I have a list of objects that match the header title. I assumed the solution would be to use ToDictionary to convert the objects, but this allows only one object per "group" (or dictionary key). I assumed I could create the dictionary of type (String, List Of()), but I can't figure out how to write it. As an example I have written a simplified version below.

Flatten A Dictionary Of Dictionaries And Sum The Values Of The Inner Dictionary With LINQ?

Apr 16, 2012

I have the following object:

countDictionary As Dictionary(of Category, Dictionary(of Date, Integer))

The Class has a Enumeration Property. For the purposes of demonstration, I'll call it MasterCategory.I have been trying to get out an object that looks like the following:

groupedCountDictionary As Dictionary(of MasterCategory, Dictionary(of Date, Integer)

The best result I could get was:

Lookup(of MasterCategory, Dictionary(of Date, Integer))

From:

countDictionary.ToLookup(Function(o) o.Key.MasterCategory, Function(o) o.Value)

Which results in a IEnumerable (Of Dictionary(of Date, Integer)) for each MasterCategory value. However, I need that IEnumerable of Dictionary flattened to one dictionary with all the integers summed (total counts) for each date. I then tried to use various selects and group bys (from numerous stackoverflow posts) to "flatten" it, but my efforts have fallen short.

Current Code

[Category Class]
- MasterCategory As Enum
- Name As String etc

C# - Can A DataGrid Column Be Two-way Bound To A Dictionary Item

Mar 14, 2012

I am working on a bound DataGrid that displays data from a database. I'm using Silverlight 5 if that helps. Currently all the data is stored in a Dictionary within the my entity object. Using the Property[Key] syntax for the binding path binds properly for display purposes. But the column acts like it is readonly when trying to change a column value in runtime.

Public Class Entity
Public Property Attributes As New Dictionary(Of String, Object)
End Class

[Code].....

My only thought right now is to store the column values in ordered lists and display them using an index rather than key. But I would really like to know why the key isn't working.

System.Collections.Generic.Dictionary `Add` Vs Set `Item`

May 20, 2011

If i wish to put items into a System.Collections.Generic.Dictionary, I can either Add or set the Item.I know if you do Add it helps you check if the key already exists and if not it throws an exception. Now I'm curious, so if I'm adding a ton of items, should I prefer setting Item instead of Add since Add does unnecessary checks that may actually slow things down?

Add Keys/values To Dictionary At Declaration?

Sep 22, 2010

Very easy today, I think. In C#, its:

Dictionary<String, String> dict = new Dictionary<string, string>() { { "", "" } };

But in vb, the following doesn't work.

Public dict As Dictionary(Of String, String) = New Dictionary(Of String, String) (("",""))

I'm pretty sure there's a way to add them at declaration, but I'm not sure how. And yes, I want to add them at declaration, not any other time. :)

I've also tried:

Public dict As Dictionary(Of String, String) = New Dictionary(Of String, String) ({"",""})

And...

Public dict As Dictionary(Of String, String) = New Dictionary(Of String, String) {("","")}

And...

Public dict As Dictionary(Of String, String) = New Dictionary(Of String, String) {{"",""}}

Update Values Of Objects In A Dictionary?

i don't figure out how to update a value of a object.

i use TryGetValue to get a reference to a object of the dictionary collection.

But the changes i made at the referenced object are not made at the object at the dictionary.

Any hints how to get a object reference to change values without to re-add the complete object?[code]...

Edit Item Or Subitem Values Of A Selected Listview Item?

May 19, 2009

Ok, so I have a listview on one form, and when a button is pressed it opens up a new form with the contents of the selected listview item and it's subitems in a series of textboxes. The user can then change the data in the textboxes and either press save to make the changes or cancel to close the window. What command would I use to change the selected listview item and subitems to whatever is in the boxes?

this is the code that populates the boxes:

Private Sub Form_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
Dim appeditcontents As String = main.passlist.SelectedItems(0).ToString

Iterate Through The Keys And Values Collections Of A Dictionary Object Using An Index?

Apr 25, 2009

I have a VB.NET project where I am able to iterate through the keys and values collections of a dictionary object using an index:

MyDictionary.Keys(idx)
MyDictionary.Values(idx)

When this code is taken from the test project and placed into the real project I get the following error:

'System.Collections.Generic.Dictionary(Of Double, String).KeyCollection' cannot be indexed because it has no default property.[code]...

In the line in sub search that says "dtf.Keys(idx) = 0" place your cursor after the right parenthesis and backspace you should get a tooltip that says, "<Extension> ElementAtOrDefault(index as Integer) as Double - index: the zero based element of the index to retrieve.

Summing All Of A Collection In A Listbox?

Oct 17, 2011

I am trying to add numbers. So if there are 2 numbers in a listbox, theyare summed up. If there are 3 numbers in a listbox, they are summed up

[Code]...

What I'm trying to do is to count the number of items. Then I start my counter at 0. For each time the counter goes up, I add another row from the list box. and loops until my counter reaches the number of items in my listbox. I'm stuck intTotal. The only way I know of adding the totals is lstCosts.Items(0)+lstCosts.Items(1)+lstCosts.Items(3). But what if the user enters 4 numbers? I can't find a way around that. I think this should be a very simple question and I think only this line needs to be changed.

I've tried playing with some code but its not giving me what I expect and I'm unable to figure out exactly why. I'm sure there is a more efficient way to do this but I'm unable to find it.

Summing Lines In A Text File?

However, sometimes there will be repeats in string1 and string2. If there are repeated lines I would like to be able to delete the repeating line and add a counter to find the total number of repeating lines. so if a string repeates 3 times I would like there to be a column with a 3 displayed next to the line in my datatable.
