Let's say that you have a texbox labeled TexBox2 and you don't want it to be seen when the program runs because TextBox1 pulls information from TextBox2 and it shows up inside of TextBox1. How would you go about doing this?

I needed to save a value when my app is run for the first time that would be applicable to all users who logon to the PC and use my application. The setting is only known at the time of the install so Application settings with application or user scope are unsuitable. I was advised to save the setting to an external file and save/read it as needed. The obvious choice was to save the file to the projects application path (keeping things tidy). Everything worked fine during testing but when the application is installed on a PC, the application path becomes C:program files application nameetc. When I try to execute the code that saves the file, I get a permissions denied error. I understand that it's part of the UAC control but when did it become acceptable to stop developers programmatically creating files in their own application folder?

To grab a specific file from a specified directory, read the lines and display them in a text box. What I want to do, is search for multiple text files in a specified directory, display each name in a Listview and, as I click on them, their info is displayed in the text box below.
I currently have a bunch of text files I need to edit in a folder, I need to edit each file and remove the same line but not all files have this line, so I need to create a script that needs to check if the line exists then remove it.I have 1000s of files, that's why I need help to be able to create a script that does it for me instead of me editing each one manually.I am not sure on how to do this, but I am sure it is not difficult for people that have good experience with VB.net.

I have a sansa fuze and i have to make my own playlist for it so i want to have the program read the songs that are on there and show it to you in the list box and you can check off the ones you want then it will read the mp3 files to make the playlist, it needs the path, name, and duration from the mp3 file. i can get the name and the path so far...
I am going to need to create a windows form for work that we can connect to a database table, select a directory and move files from the directory that are in the table and move to another folder. The directory will have sub directories that I need to search for the file name and move. I would like to have the table hold the file name (or path) and move all files that are in the database. I have a loop set up that iterates through a List of video object and downloads them one by one. The problem is, that because of varying file sizes, I need my outter loop to wait until a file is downloaded. What would be the most efficient way to do this? I am using System.Net.Webclient As of right now the downloading works somewhat, I get about 24-27 of 94 files. The download method I am using is synchronous btw.

View 2 RepliesI have a program where a lot of the required information for it is stored in text files. I simply read this information into large arrays. However, I don't think it's necessary to load all the information each time. Rather, it would be more efficient if I could simply search through a list of items to find the one I need and then use the data from it, or to find a similar name and use it elsewhere.
Would I be right in using a database? And is database programming done in SQL? I have a book on it telling me to use the SQL Server (IIRC), so I shouldn't be doing it in the VB.NET Express GUI?
Here's an example of what I would do:
Hex = 03 00 => dex number 003
Search in file Pokemon Dex Numbers
003 returns Bulbasaur
Check Bulbasaur base stats in the base stats file
etc
So basically I'm reusing a lot of information. I think a database would be best and it would all be internal right? I'm getting complaints about access denied to a text file (since it's stored in the program directory in the program files).
So to cap up the few questions I have:
-Databases are done in SQL and not inside the GUI?
-Databases would load internally?
-I could search a database without having to load it into like an array or something?
Having a bit of an issue with my file.scanner and that issue is that I cannot figure out how to run multi.threading when searching the files within a folder(8,000+ files).

I have a SQL Server table with a list of files (path + filename), and a folder with multiple layers and files in each layer. I'm looking for a way to reconcile the two without having to process the list twice. Currently, I'm doing this:

If f.Exists is False, mark it as deleted in the database

Is there a better way to do this? I'd like to avoid converting all the matching files (of which most will be) to FileInfo objects twice. Since I'm a T-SQL developer first, I'm picturing something like an OUTER JOIN of the two lists where they don't match. Something LINQ-ish?
