I have been at VB.NET for a very short while now (about 1 month) and I can say without a doubt my knowledge of VB has continued to amplify from the information posted in these forums.Along with my first post I also have a question about setting an icon for my application .exe file.I have read that I need to go to Project > properties then on the Application tab there is a section to change the icon from the default to something else. However when I do this and choose the icon that I want, I get an error when I use the debug to run my application. It says "Unable to write to output file C:/... the specified image file did not contain a resource section".

Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition. I completed a few projects earlier this year and have just returned to build a new project and find that I am getting an error on the build. I get the following message: Unable to output file '<Projects location><Project_name>objDebug<Project_name>.exe'. Could not execute CVTRES.EXE.
I also get this message on projects I have completed previously. I have reinstalled (repair) and then un-installed and reinstalled Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition to no avail. I also notice that Help topics such as Technical Support and Check for Updates give the following response: The operation could not be completed. I am unaware of any changes to the environment that could have caused these errors.

I've this txt file (almost 60 MiB)
[Code]...
Every line starts with 56000 then the first key, the the second key and the rest of the line. I tried to use SORT, that's included with Windows. It does a pretty nice job, but i need to have my own function in case SORT is not available. The output should write 560001002001 at first.

We have an c# class, say we have a following method with out parameterpublic class TestCsharpClass{ public Int32 GetNumber(out bool pbNull){ pbnull=true; return 1; }}tlb file for C# project is generated with regasm tool. The above method is called in vb6 application using callbyName Dim number as IntegerDim objTest as TestCsharpClassdim blnNull as Booleannumber = CallByName(objTest,"GetNumber",VbMethod, blnNull) return value 'Number' is fine. But 'blnNull' boolean variable is "False" always. We were unable to get the out parameter value from C# code.Function signatures are defined in the IDL file.Without changing the function signature is it possible to get the resolution/workaround solution for this issue

I'm trying to adapt a VBscript that runs the QWINSTA command against a text file I've defined as an array and displays the results in a text file.after looking at numerous examples on Stack and other sites this is my latest iteration, that displays everything except the STDOUT, which is really what I'm after, not sure if it's an issue with how I'm calling the command piping the output or what. I'm also passing two variables as arguments to complicate matters :)
The Text file that stdout is piped to is empty after the FOR Loop completes I may be going the long way about this, most of my past experience with this is in BATCH

I am using Visual Studio 2010 Professional in trial mode... and suddenly the Output window won't show my Debug.Write() stuff. It had been showing it for the past month.I have been using the 2010 version for 30 days (after upgrading from Visual Studio 2003) in trial mode. I just renewed the trial for the extra 60 days, and the "About Visual Studio" window says I still have 59 days left.
I have verified that the application is running properly, without errors. When I purposely generate an error, the Output Window properly shows the error and the stack trace I've already checked my Build>Configuration... it's in "Debug" mode, not "Release". The Debug.Write() text is not going to the Immediate window, either. One other point, I tried running the same application in the Visual Studio 2010 Express Edition, and it complained that it could not debug the specified code, though it did properly build it so that it would run in the build. Could Visual Studio 2010 Express have modified something in my project files to disable the debugging output?

I have a video encoder app made with VB6 that users frequently have issues with. The problem that people encounter is that files do not show up in the output folder where my application is set to write them. The output folder is located in C:Program FilesMyAppOutput. Vista users can sometimes click "Compatibility Files" and see the outputted files. Sometimes I must tell users to "Run As Administrator.."

Is there a good example on using C# with vb.net 2008 or above. I am looking for the simplest example. A class library I would be able to write with C# and use from vb.net. Probably a .dll I would imagine.
Could someone recommend some search strings for this forum I can try? I am looking for the shortest simplest example.

I have a main form with a number (in this case 9) mdichild forms. Some are visible, some not, but they are all very basic. When I write to a textbox in any child form during Main_Load it updates, when I write to a textbox in any child form inside its own _Load it updates. If I write to one from awhere else in code, including a sub in the form's own code, it fails to update.
All the child forms are identical but are distinctly separate forms created before compilation rather then NEW versions of a single form to avoid threading problems.Curiously this code worked once only. No edits were made and when re-ran failed after stopping it if found all the controls in some of the forms were invisibe in developer mode, restarted VS but still not there. Run app and at runtime there they were!!! Also all locked textboxes still accepting input.

I've been trolling for a long time now and have decided to register as I finally have some time to start jumping into VB. The last time I coded VB, the current version was VB 4. I've been out of programming for a good while now and considered myself a beginner (tutorial example coder haha).
My question is: Where is a good place to start learning VB.NET?
I know it's an often asked and answered question - but let me give you a bit more information so more specialized replies might be given.
I'm in INFOSEC/COMSEC and would like to (eventually) develop a program that contains a DB of information that is read by the application and saves input information into a DB (encrypted) as well. The program will be a 800-53 C&A control assessment program; used for tracking system compliance for federal information systems. I would like to be able to develop such a tool to make my life easier at work instead of using Excel spreadsheets to track everything.
I would like to learn:
- Input / Output methods and validation (for secure coding)
- Read/Write DB Encryption (RSA or other 128-bit) for user input information
- Ability to generate PDF reports from the primary keys and data sets from the above DB
My goal is to create a program that allows a user to install the program, setup a 'master' account that a serial/key has been generated for - that master account is then allowed to create new projects (progress saved in DB). A project asks the user certain questions pertaining to information systems and takes the input and saves it into the DB (encrypted). When the assessment is completed, I would like the program to be able to generate a PDF report from the DB (from a layout template I created).
