I've trawled Google looking for (a) how to randomize in VB and ( how to tutorials on this topic for beginners, but with very limited success.
I own several VB books and not one of them even lists the word 'Random' (or any derivations!) in their indexes! It's very perplexing as surely it's something that could be employed regularly?
The class Random is out right defective. It always produces the same random numbers in the same sequence. Things I have tried so far is every kind of seed you can think of as well as Randomize. The result is that I always get the same random numbers in exactly the same sequence.

I am still learning vb.net and decided to make a "horse race" to get a better understanding of inheritance and such. So first of all I made a horse class that inherits from the picturebox. I gave the horse properties such as image, height, width, x-position, and y-position. I also gave the horse a speed(between 1-1000). My idea was to have the horses start at the starting line and get them to move using a timer. Each time the timer fires the move method executes. The move method creates a new random number(seeded by DateTime.now.milisecond) between 1-1000, if the random number is lower than the speed of the horse it will "move" adding 1 to the x-position property.

Now things work as I expected for the most part, I created two new horses and gave them values, if one is "faster" than the other it will move faster. Here is the code I use to create two horses and put them in an array:

The only problem is if I give them both the same speed they seem to move in unison. I have tried adjusting the x-axis increment and have seen them both jump at the same time. Now I realize since they have the same "speed" they should have close to the same movements but wouldn't the random factor in the move method create some discrepancy between the two? I have ran this multiple times and am still unsure what the problem is.
am running VB express (2008 edition). I have a class that holds 2 arrays (1 array represents the digits of the integer side of a number the other holds the decimal digits) I have overloaded all the operators to work with these numbers as if they were one. Each operator has the following format:

whats happening is that the sign of the b variable (and only the b variable) randomly changes. Almost allways at the statement bb=b (bb is in place so when I reach that point I know what the variable had before the calculation). I can watch it change as I step through the code (stepping over the operators) I can watch it change almost allways at the bb=b, but sometimes in other odd places (such as the d=a*yparam statement). I can change the values back to their original and step through the code(stepping into the operator this time) and it will not do it. It NEVER does it when stepping into the operator, only when I dont, and only sometimes. I have spent the last two days working on debugging this one problem, with every other variable in the function it works like it should and I am not sure what to look at next. I know it does you no good without seeing the code but didnt think pasting 8,000 lines of code would go over too well so I would be willing to send the source to anyone
I am having a problem with a and OOP class i made that contains a sub that creates random integers.
Problem is if i define two instances of this class and configure them(name in this case) then they both display different names but the random integers are ALWAY the same. in this case having the integers the same kinda kills the idea of the program.
Is it possible that the random part only every works for one class, but if .NET is fully OOP then this should not be possible... right?

View 3 RepliesI've read numerous posts and threads about random number generation, but I havent' run across this.If I generate a bunch of random numbers, the results are radically different if I create a new Random generator for each number than if I use on Random generator for all the numbers. The results are much more consistent and evenly distributed if I use the same Random generator.I would have thought the opposite,because creating a new Random generator each time should reduce the number of random repetitions, if a different time slice is used to create the random number.[code]......
View 9 RepliesI am practicing using the drawing commands, and have gotten a grass background and black happy face that moves around the background.It's a 10x10 grid of 50 pixels.I want (at the moment, when i press enter) it to generate a random number of trees (15 ~ 25) at random locations on the background. The program doesn't freak out about anything, and the variables seem to be right (using stop commands) but it's not drawing anything. -Random Integer (1 to 100)
-Random Answer (Yes or No, similar to a coin flip)

VS2010 (SP1) / .NET 4 on Windows XP. The question is simple, the answer; not so much. When generating a salt, should the LENGTH of the salt be random, fixed or a random number within a (min/max) range? I am using RNGCryptoServiceProvider to generate the salt, just unsure of the length of the salt.

"MenuStrip" is what the global form is called. But keep getting this error: Error1Base class 'MenuStrip' specified for class 'Lesson2' cannot be different from the base class 'System.Windows.Forms.Form' of one of its other partial types.

The last word, "ClientProfile" has the scary squiggly red line below it. It is not recognizing my class.Even the Intellisense is not picking up te class. Do I have to register the class file in any way?

so I used to mess around with C#, just a little. And someone had helped me make a class for Visual C# that was supposed to do the math parts for "internal structure" - which the program used for a part of its calculations and screen... Basically there were 2 options. Endo-Steel and Standard. The user would use a updownbox to determine weight of the machine and then internal structure was a % of that total. If it was standard then it was 10% of the overall weight, if it was Endo-Steel then it was 50% of standard (so 5% of total weight) rounded to next 0.5 (so .25 was .5, 1.25 was 1.5, 1.75 was 2.0, etc). I have the code for the C# class file for it, but want to make it in VB.

The result:Application runs, no errors or exceptions.Displayed is the listbox and the Start button.I press the start button and a msgbox says "Not Invoked" as expected and upon clicking OK to that msgbox "Start Button Pressed" is added to the Output listbox control.Immediately following that the msgbox pops up again and says "Not Invoked". I was expecting "Invoked" as a separate thread is trying to use the Output listbox control.Of course this results in the Output.Items.Add being attempted which results in no visible result as the thread is not allowed to directly update the UI control.
I have some classes, BsfciFile and StudyFlashCard. Bsfci is the extension to which I save my set of flashcards in an INI format. I am currently working to transform my code from using Windows API calls to access the INI to using a IniFile class that I found on the internet. I would like the BsfciFile to have a Array of StudyFlashCard objects, but I would like the StudyFlashCard class to use the IniFile class object contained in the BsfciFile class. I can pass the IniFile from the BsfciFile class to the constructor for the StudyFlashCard class, but I want it to modify the same IniFile as the BsfciFile class has later on.

View 1 RepliesBase class has one field to hold numeric balance value. With 2 methods that accept arguments for adding and subtracting the new input calculating new balance. Sub class has four fields dates, transaction, memo and amount.I have a deposit form, and withdraw form. Each time one transaction is entered it creates an object with sub class fields, then adds to the account collection. My problem is not understanding how to call the deposit/withdraw method and pass the current transaction amount back to the base class to alculate the new balance. Does anyone have any links to information/tutorials on how to perform something like this? As you can see with my code I have tried various different approaches without any success.

I want to created a nested class that can only be visible to and instantiated from the parent class.But I also want to be able to use an instance of the nested class through a public variable of the parent class.I tried making the nested class private, or making the nested class' constructor private, but it won't compile.Is it possible to do this in .NET?
