User Validation - .add And .invoke Being Ran asynchronously And Occasionally Causing Errors?

Sep 2, 2011

I have a bit of code that jumps around a few domains and adds a user to each of them. This follow is a piece of code I had to write to get around the issue of the .add and .invoke being ran asynchronously and occasionally causing errors.

It connects to the domain in question, passing a "CN" from the code in as a search filter but receives a COMException which is normally a LDAP sting config issue. The connection string in this is fine so I am not sure why it is having such a hard time.

Function GetUser(ByVal UserId As String) As DirectoryEntry
Dim objRootEntry As New DirectoryEntry
objRootEntry.Path = "LDAP://DC=SERVER,DC=LOCAL"[code]....

Javascript - OnClientClick Prevent Page Submission If Validation Errors?

Aug 8, 2011

I've written a JavaScript function which validates form input and highlights the input fields and displays any error messages, which I have tested and all works fine. i have called this function from the OnClientClick attribute of an asp:Button tag. However, if the JavaScript function determines there to be validation errors, I want to stop the form from submitting. How do I do this?

Multithreading - Me.Invoke Doesn't "Invoke" - Threads Stall On Invoke Statement

The problem is that, when I call the "SetStatusBarText" sub from another thread, InvokeRequired is True (as it should be), but then my threads stall on the Me.Invoke statement - pausing execution shows them all just sitting there, not actually invoking anything.

WPF User Control Is Causing Out Of Memory Exception?

Mar 8, 2010

I have created a windows form based application and I want the form to add a user specified amount of user controls (with textboxes) on to a panel. The user can then click some button and the controls on this panel are cleared and new ones are added. The user does something and the process is repeated. Now, I wanted these textboxes to support spell checking and looked all over for a free solution.

WPF textboxes support spell checking where the ones in regular win forms do not. I thought I would be able to use these WPF textboxes by adding them to an ElementHost object which is, in turn, within a panel. This panel would be a user control.

So, in my application, I would be able to add instances of these user controls onto the form and make use of .NET's spell checking goodness. This actually worked but after using the application for a while, found that the application would eventually freeze on me due to out of memory errors. I have pinpointed the memory errors to these WPF controls since this problem does not happen with normal textboxes.

When the window is opened and the number of controls is specified, this is pretty much how the controls are added:

Dim xOffset As Integer = 0
For i As Integer = 0 To theNumber
Dim myUserControl As New SpecialUserControl()

[Code].....

There are a lot of results on the internet when I tried to find a solution and I'm thinking that the problem I am having is due to the fact that the WPF control is not going away even after clearing the panel. Following this conclusion, I have tried different solutions regarding disposing these controls or setting them to nothing but the memory problem keeps occurring.

Do Data Validation When The User Exits A Control

Jan 31, 2012

What is the best method to do data validation? I want to do data validation when the user exits a control so that he gets immediate feedback. I can use the Validating event or the Leave event for that. The problem is, that if the user doesn't know the right answer, and just wants to click the cancel button and leave the form completely, it won't let him. It continues to give him an error message until he completely deletes his answer. Very frustrating. Does anyone have a good method for doing this?

Invoke UI From Separate Thread Does Not Invoke

Oct 13, 2010

We have a UI with a progressbar. I know how to invoke, safely, the control from which it was not created from a thread. there are threads being processed in a threadpool, all of which calls an "agent" (which is a notifier to raise an event back to the UI to then increase the progressbar). an "agent" is set as a property in a State object, which is then passed into a method which will be executed on the ThreadPool. so, I invoke on the UI the method to update the progressbar, but the bar does not seem to update at all (screen frozen) and it takes a very very long time for it to execute. without threading, no problem.

Handle Errors Caused By Invalid User Input In A Program?

Mar 10, 2011

how do I handle the errors that may appear from the user of my program. For example, I have an triangle area program in wich I ask the user of the program to insert the length of the base and height of the triangle in a textbox. But what if he inserts a letter or something else, like a sign....my program will crash...

I know that one method would be to use On Error GoTo but I don't know how. If maybe you can direct me to some link or you could explain how do I handle errors, I would be grateful. Maybe you can even show me other ways to avoid errors from the user input.

This is my small program so far:

Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs)
Handles Button1.Click
Dim , Height, ARIA As Integer

Validate User Input - Loop Conditional Statements To Indicate Errors?

Mar 20, 2011

I have several text boxes I need to validate. I am not understanding how to validate in Visual Basic 2008. So I deployed standard If Statements to handle bad data. I am having two problems.

Lets say the user entered wrong data, example, numbers; an error message is displayed. The text boxes cannot contain numbers, be left empty or contained characters, like !@#$. The problem is if the user enter text, and then entered a wrong data again the code does not work or display error message. How can I make the conditions so that they throw out error message even if the user had previously entered good data.

Another example: If the user enter good data in text box 1 and bad data in text box 2, the error message does not work.

Finally, how do I filter out characters to allow only text. Is there a way to use this code on multiple text boxes with out writing the entire code for each form control?

Here are the conditional statements.
Private Sub btnDataSubmit_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnDataSubmit.Click
If IsNumeric(txtDataEntry.Text) Then
lblErrorDisplay.Text = "Invalid Name!"
lblErrorDisplay.BackColor = Color.Red

Create An Occasionally Connected Application?

Mar 30, 2010

I'm trying to teach myself how to create an Occasionally Connected Application. I want to create a simple app (like a survey) that will store all the data on a server but have the front end run on the users computer. The users computer may or may not be connected to a server when the data is entered (they may be collecting data in the field).

Program does 3 things:

1. Shows data from database (ie, displays survey data stored on server)

2. Saves data to database (ie, new entries or changes to old entries)

3. Has a background thread that checks for network connection

a. If no connection exists:

i. Gets data, to show, from local database

ii. Saves data to local database

b. If connections exists:

i. Sync local database with network database

ii. To read data: Gets data to show from local database which is now synced with network)

iii. To save changes/new entry: Save changes to local database then sync changes with network, then send update call to anyone else running this app on a different computer so they will get the same changes?

Infragistics UltraWinGrid Hidden Occasionally

Mar 18, 2011

I have a Windows Form custom control that displays alerts on a customer record. The control uses an Infragistics 9.1 UltraWinGrid to display these alerts, which is filled from a dataset populated by a business object. Some users are having issues viewing these alerts; the grid will be completely blank, like the fields were hidden for some reason. This sample code shows how the grid is populated:

Private Sub InquiryCallbackAlertList(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As FunctionRequestEventArgs)
Try
'Code to populate the dataset mdslist
AlertsGrid.Visible = True
[Code] .....

I have not had any success finding anything out about this problem. I did add some trace logic to check the 'HiddenResolved' property on the grid rows and am waiting to find out the results of that. Is there anything else that could be causing this grid to only be hidden for some users and not for others, and also could anything else be causing this only to happen occasionally?

SQL Server Synchronization Of Occasionally Connected App?

Mar 11, 2010

Beginning development with SQL Server 2008, VB - Visual Studio 2008 on an application that will deploy laptops remotely for 6 months or more. The laptops will have no network or internet connection. There is a requirement to sync DB changes via shipment of USB flash drives.

The remote app will have a subset of the home database data. Some tables need to be synced bi-directionally, some uni-directionally. When the laptop comes home, it will do one last sync, the local DB will be wiped, and it will connect to the home DB.

Being that there are some identity key columns and the remote is only a subset of the the home, I am not sure that SQL Server replication or synchronization functions can be utilized.

Should I Create SQL Server Compact DB's on the remote system when it is deployed and do a table by table compare (in code) to another compact DB created on the flash drive when a sync is needed?
