Asp.net - Was Visual Studio 2008, 2010 Or 2012 (v11) Written To Use Multi Cores

Nov 28, 2009

Basically i want to know if the visual studio IDE and/or compiler in 2010 and 2012 was written to make use of a multi core environment (i understand we can target multi core environments in all versions using parallelism, but that is not my question).I am trying to decide on if i should get a higher clock dual core or a lower clock quad core, as i want to try and figure out which processor will give me the absolute best possible experience with Visual Studio 2010 or 2012 (v11) (ide and background compiler).

If they are running the most important section (background compiler and other ide tasks) in one core, then the core will get cut off quicker if running a quad core, especially if background compiler is the heaviest task, i would imagine this would be difficult to separate in more than one process, so even if it uses multi cores you might still be better off with going for a higher clock CPU if the majority of the processing is still bound to occur in one core (i.e. the most significant part of the VS environment).

C# - Setting The Cores To Use In Parallelism?

Set CPU Affinity For 4 Cores Machine?

Nov 5, 2009

In my application I has a feature to set CPU application affinity for the application. I have a combo box with the following items:

Item 0: "ALL" -> It's point that if select the application will use all available CPUs
Item 1: "1" -> For set application to use first core
Item 2: "2" -> For set application to use second core
...
Item N....

Where N is the total numbers of CPUs/cores available in the system.

Now when the user click in one of this I execute this

Private Sub comboCPUAffinity_SelectedIndexChanged(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles comboCPUAffinity.SelectedIndexChanged
Dim num As Integer = comboCPUAffinity.Items.Count - 1

[Code]....

This works well in my vista 2-cpu machine, and also in 1 core machines. The problem is that I have release the application and has a user who has a 64bits vista 4 cores machine, and when execute the above code the application causes a buffer overflow. This is maybe because I have something bad in the code which can not test because I have not the machine to test.

Coding For Multicore Processors?

May 27, 2010

What i have heard is, that a program dont get much faster on a dual core (or quad core) than on a single core processor, because windows assigns the program to just one core. (but still a little faster because other programs run on the other cores instead or something like that). And if you want to exploit the power of multicores, you have to code in a way so that different calculations get sent to different cores simultanuasly and then gather the result afterward.First of, is this correct? And if so (or if not so) is it possible to program in vb to exploit multicores. I mean can you create 4 threads and assign them to each core, or does this require some heavy C++ coding? The reason im asking is because and application i have created uses biometric identification (fingerprints) and this requires somcalculations, the more fingerprints that gets stored. Then if i somehow could make it use more codes, maybe this will be a little faster? Is this possible in vb, or would i get way in over my head for trying to work with th

.net Timer With Windows 7 Dual Processors?

Apr 14, 2010

I have been writing visual basic and vb .net applications for years and have come across this problem with the timer component under Windows 7 32bit on dual core Intel processors. This problem only occurs with Windows 7 running on a dual core processor, single core and under the virtual pc on any processor works.

I have attached a test program to show this problem. The program uses 2 timers to count down to 0. It does not matter what type of timer component I use system.timer.timer or system.windows.forms.timer. I read the system.timer.timer may fix this problem so I changed the program to use it but it did the exact same thing. Left it in anyway.

The program: Timer1 is set to a number of ms for a given amount of time say 150000 for 150 seconds and started. The timer will expire correctly. At the same time a second timer Timer2 is set to 1000 ms for a count down display to 0. Timer2 fires and the count is updated. This happens and everything looks fine. When Timer1 fires I disable timer2 so it will stop counting down. Timer2's countdown is at 2 instead of 0. It is firing slow. If I increase the value of timer1 to say 500 seconds timer2 is behind by 6 seconds. These amounts are the same for the 2 very different computers I ran this on but both are dual processor systems running Windows 7. The exact code works correctly on Windows Xp on the same processors and works under Windows 7 on a Pentium 4 system.

Timers Under Windows 7 Dual Core Processors ?

Aug 27, 2010

After I upgraded from Windows Xp to Windows 7 on any dual core cpu machine my programs that use a simple timer function run incorrectly. The program works with the exact same hardware under Windows Xp and Windows Server 2003. I am using Visual Studio 2005 to write .NET Visual Basic programs that use 2 timers to count down. The first timer, timer1, is set to a value say 150000 ms (150 seconds). The second timer, timer2, is set to 1000ms (1 second). Both timers are enabled one right after the other from a button click event and begin. The timer2 routine running every second updates a label counting down the seconds. When timer1 fires it disables itself and exits. Timer2 also checks to see if timer1 is still running if it is not it will stop. Under Windows Xp and Windows Server 2003 the resulting count in the label is 0 when timer2 detects timer1 has finished. Under Windows 7 when timer1 stops timer2 is not at 0 it is 3 for 150 seconds and gets larger the more timer1 is increased. It appears to me timer2 is not being fired every 1000ms as it was under Windows Xp.

I have included the Visual Basic code below. If you want to test it just run Visual Studio and create a new project. Put the buttons, numericupdown, and labels in your form and past my code into the correct buttons. I have used these type of timer events for years without any problems unit Windows 7. Windows 7 on a single core Pentium 4 with hyperthreading turned on works fine. Windows 7 on a dual core E6500 fails, Windows Server 2003 works.

Multi Key Hotkeys In VB 2010?

Feb 24, 2012

I've written a simple WAV player in VB 2010 - a Windows Form App with no menus. I'm trying to create a hotkey, like CTRL-D that would make a text box visible. Typing the correct password in the box will expand the form and show some Administrative functions. I'm having issues creating the hotkey with more than one key.I've got the following code, but it does not work. I do have KeyPreview set to True.

Private Sub _KeyDown(sender As Object, e As System.Windows.Forms.KeyEventArgs) Handles Me.KeyDown
If e.KeyCode = Keys.Control And e.KeyCode = Keys.D Then
txtPWD.Visible = True

I've also tried

If e.Keycode = Keys.ControlKey & e.KeyCode = Keys.D

and many other variations including changing to ALT and SHIFT but nothing seems to work. If I remove one of the Keys, it works just fine.

VS 2010 Having The Multi-Threading IP's?

Dec 11, 2010

I've been raking my brain for quite some time on this. Is there any way with VB.NET that I can use multiple IP's in one instance of a program? For example, I want to be able to navigate to a web page 10 times at once, with each one using a different IP. I want them to be parallel (multi-threaded) rather than going sequentially. Going sequentially, I could just do the action, change the IP, do the action, change the IP.

VS 2010 Multi Threading The Right Way?

Jan 10, 2012

I have a button and when it's clicked a HTTP request is sent out to a website to do a few things, but because its got to load the external resources it makes the interface frozen. I've moved the HTTP onto another thread using the follow

VB.NET Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click Dim Thread1 As New System.Threading.Thread(AddressOf check_accounts)

[Code]...

When i want to update a label that is on my main form (from the check_accounts sub). I know that isn't the right way, but i have no idea what the right way is. All the documentation i can find is very (excuse me for this) nerdy and really doesn't offer much insight on how to incorporate it into a project.

I want to be able to have a numericupdown box that can let the user change the amount of threads they want to use. I assume more threads allow the http requests to be done faster and at the same time? Also if i wanted to pause the HTTP requests, would the best method to use be pausing the thread?

VS 2010 Multi Language Networking App

Dec 4, 2011

I am a Network Administrator in the Army so programming is not my strong area. I have been messing with Batch files and WMI, just recently i started VB Scripts (VERY BASIC) like adding an input box to set computer name, scan network for computer name on domain, return wmi info for that remote computer etc... I know there are programs out there that can do all of this, however the Army will only allow certain approved programs to be installed on government workstations, i have been using .Bat files to gather info which is fine, however it is very time consuming when you have entire subnets with computers, networked printers, etc to place into a spreadhseet for higher headquarters tracking not to mention the over 20 columns of required data to track for each computer. I have VB 2010 Express, working on a Windows Form Application Project. Goal is to interface my VB Script (written with notepad) with a GUI that will generate an internal spreadsheet on the form window in a datagridview. So far i have the basic window and i have my gridview with my column headers set. How do i get the data into the columns and rows accordingly.

Application Basic: Execute Program, in main window select button (Scan IP Range) <--- I want this to open an input box for the beginning subnet, input base address to start scan from, next input box for end range, then msgbox for start scan. i want the results of the scan to autofill the datagridview and add new row for each IP address that had a ping reply, returning valid data from WMI results as it receives the data. What would be the best method to achieve my goal. i am not asking you to write the program, i have been looking and studying MULTIPLE sites, think i just need another set of eyes on this to unlock the knowledge i have locked away, if ya know what i mean. Also, if you don't mind let me know what you think of this app im trying to turn out... Super Thanks for your help. This is the Base Batch File running. It calls an external VB Script written in notepad. (I want this implemented into the app form so there is no console window.)This is the inputbox from external VB Script that is called. This the result of the external VB Script (the info i want to put in the datagridview of the app.)I also, for some reason can't get scroll bars to show in the app when i hit F5, theres about 15 columns passed the MAC column...?

VS 2010 True Multi-threading?

VS 2008 Multi-threding - Adding Multi-threading Facilities - Cross-thread Operation Not Valid

Feb 10, 2010

I'm adding multi-threading facilities for the first time. I have a function that is wrapped to be run in a separated thread. This function retrieves data (text) from a combobox and it works for sure without multi-threading.

When I call it as multi-threaded, I get the following error when I try to retrieve the data from the cmobobox: Cross-thread operation not valid: Control 'cmb1stBL' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on.

It looks like a restriction of thread-safety... I assume that the child thread cannot read from his parent, to make sure that he doesn't change his parent data. So how can I read the data from the combobox? Should I read the comoboxbox data before calling the child thread?

VS 2010 : Multi-dimensional Byte Array?

Mar 30, 2011

I think I need a two dimensional byte array I currently have something like this:

Dim MbyteData(196608) As Byte
' Open the file that is to be loaded into a byte array
Dim oFile As System.IO.FileInfo
oFile = New System.IO.FileInfo(sFilePath)

[code]....

I now need to load several files at once (say four) so I need four arrays of 196608 bytes and I want to reference them by a number - 0 to 3, assuming the array is zero based. If I use Dim MbyteData(196608, 3) as byte or Dim MbyteData(3, 196608) as byte the syntax seems to be correct but I hit an error ("Number of indices is less than the number of dimensions of the indexed array") when I try to add the extra dimension to the stream read with something like oFileStream.Read(MbyteData(index), 0, MiByteCount).
