VB: Convert String (From Textboxes) To Int?
Oct 11, 2009
I am making a very small program. I got a form2 and 2 textbloxes and a button (and a label). I want to use the textboxes to change the form1 window's width and height and apply changes on button click. I can't get the textboxes to convert from string to int? I am still learning VB and highschool doesn't teach this stuff. Any help on how to do this? And maybe a free ebook on VB 9 or 10?

To simplify my problem, lets say I have 200 textboxes on a form. I want the first 100 to become disabled in a certain subroutine. I don't want to write 100 lines to disable each textbox; I'd rather write a loop to do it but can't figure out how. For instance:
dim i as integer
dim s as string
for i = 1 to 100
[Code].....
I tried "dim c as new control" then "c.name=s" but I don't think this makes "c" as a member of my form and it didn't do anything as a result. I think I need to figure out how to declare c as a control that exists within my form but can't figure out the syntax for that.

I'd like to convert a string which contains a decimal number into string that contains the binary value, the octal and the hexadecimal value of that decimal number.Afterwards I also like to convert a string containing a binary, octal and hexd. number into a decimal string.Basically I'm looking for the functions:
dec2bin
dec2oct
dec2hex
bin2dec
oct2dec
hex2dec
I'd not prefer to rewrite a function, I'm sure the framework must have these functions already.

I am wondering if it is possible to take a string, split it at a certain character and then put the 2 parts in different text boxes.
For example:
String: PCNAME%Message
Textbox1: PCNAME
Textbox2: Message

When clearing input from users. What is the difference between clearing it in these two forms
txtExample.Clear()
versus
txtExample.Text = String.Empty
The only difference that I could find was that the labels aren't cleared with .Clear() (or at least from what I inferred from my book that's not possible). Is there a noticeable speed difference or should I just clear both labels and txt boxes with String.Empty

Basically I have an application that has 2 textboxes and a button. What I am trying to do is when the button is clicked, it takes an entered string from box one (which is validated to only accept numbers) adds 235 to it then converts it to hex and finally reverse the string and sets textbox two equal to that value. Note that the final string has to be eight digits so the string may needed to be padded with zeros before the string is reversed. With that said how could I go about doing this? Also I do plan to add 2 more textboxes and another button to undo this process but I am thinking if I can figure out do it one way writing the code to undo the process shouldn't be too hard.

Currently, I'm using the following code to pull info from the management class.
[code]...
I'm also pulling info from the bios, disk drives, video, etc. What I've noticed, is although it runs fine on my pc, it may error out on some pcs since it is hardware dependent.I'm having trouble implementing a check to find if it exists before I convert to a string and add it to my overall string.

i've done some basic parsing with text files before.
Scenario is i have 4 textboxes String (which contains the string i'm wanting to parse) sub1, sub2, and sub3. so the string is ex. 500000-1-2
- is the char that is the seperator
so the aim here is to get
500000 into sub1
1 into sub2
2 into sub3
the real string i'm wanting to parse is much more complex, but i'm keeping it simple here for a jumping off point so i can figure the rest out.

I'm trying to do a project which involves reading the text from a number of textboxes and putting it into a string.I'm just wondering if there's an easier way to it other than:
CreateString += TextBox1.Text + TextBox2.Text + TextBox3.Text... (etc)
I have thought about creating a For Next loop which would go something like:
For i As Integer = 0 To intNoTextBoxes
CreateString += TextBox(i).Text
Next
But this really doesn't work. I also found something saying that something similar to this would work:
For i As Integer = 0 To intNoTextBoxes
CreateString += Me.Controls.Item("TextBox" & i.ToString).Text
Next
But that didn't work either.

I'm working on a mass text replacer program because I'm sick of all the 10-day trial ones out there that aren't very good.The entire program is basically finished (All easy stuff), but now I need to code the actual replace/delete stuff, which I'm stuck on because apparently the way I originally intended to do it is not possible.
The way it works is you load a text file (.txt, .cfg, .ini, .doc, etc.) which opens a StreamReader which writes all the data into a listbox. Then you pick whether you want to replace or delete a string. If you select replace, then you enter the string to search for and in another textbox you enter the string to replace it with.
The way I originally intended to do this was like this:
If o1.Text = "Replace" Then 'The option
Replace(txtfile, str1, a1) 'txtfile is the data, str1 is the string to find and a1 is the replacement
End If
The problem is, I believe this method requires txtfile, str1 and a1 to be strings, but they're all 1-dimensional string arrays, which cannot be converted to strings, or at least I don't know how to convert them.
A friend told me one way I could do this is to open both a StreamReader and StreamWriter and do the replace/delete line by line as they are entered into the memory and write them to a temporary file which is then copied over the original. I can do this kind of, but I still don't know the proper way of doing the actual replace code because the string to find and the string to replace with are still 1-dimensional string arrays rather than strings.

On my form, i've got some textboxes and some richtextboxes. I'm using the following code, to search through the text properties of each of the two types of control. see below:-
For Each ctl As Control In Me.Controls
If ctl.Text = "7777" Then
ctl.Text = "found the sevens"
End If
Next
What i'd like to do is isolate the textboxes only, is there a way to do that? I tried this but i got an error:-
For Each box As TextBox In Me.Controls
If box.Text = "7777" Then
box.Text = "Found"
End If
Next

Value of type 'System.Func(Of String, String)' cannot be converted to 'System.Converter(Of String, String)
Why? They are both effectively a function pointer (or delegate?) to a function that accept a string and return a string.

I have 1 string of 12 numbers separated by a ',' "11.11,22.22,33.33" etc coming in my serial port. One number has so far been 5339, but now its changed to 533d, which causes problems, for reasons I am still trying to work out.
The top numbers are all real numbers ie 0.000 or 00.00 or 000.0, whereas the bottom 3 numbers are Hex FFFFF but just happen to show decimal numbers by 'good luck'.[code]....
