View 3 RepliesI have a number of classes that all implement the same interface. e.g.
Public Class IncidentAsset
Implements IModelWithIdentity
Private _assetId As Int16
Private _otherAsset As String
Private _asset As Asset

Is there a better way of doing this in VB.NET using .NET 2.0?
I have a text box with a list of entries for example:
Reference 1
Reference 2
Reference 3
[Code]....
I plan to read the string back into a the textbox later using the split() method and assign each to string to an array.
I'm using String.Join to attempt to turn an array list into a string that is comma separated, such as "1,2,3,4". I can't seem to get the syntax working.
Here's what I'm trying:
Dim aryTest As New ArrayList()
aryTest.Add("1")
aryTest.Add("2")
aryTest.Add("3")
[CODE]...
How can I go about doing this properly?
These is the content of my txt file which is saved in D drive in my pc abc,1,2,3..I tried the flowing but it didn't work:[code]I am getting error on this line.. data = line.Split(","c)...it says this line isn't in use anymore or something and that I rather use LineInput but thats asks for filenumber and i don't know what that is. I am sorry but I am a complete beginner. what else can I try? [code]ok that error is gone now but now if I want to add these values to a list box..how can i do that?

I want the Function to accept List(Of String), Array & String and similarly return List(Of String), Array & String respectively. The Function simply adds a string (month) to the input collection. I just want to use it for string, array and list with needing to think of conversions.

To be able to sort a dictionary by value I'm using this code:
Dim idCurrentJobs As IDictionary(Of String, Int32) = New Dictionary(Of String, Int32)
'The string in the dictionary represents a jobname and the integer is a counter for how many jobs im currently are running in the application'
idCurrentJobs.Add("JobName1", 2)

I'm trying to solve a problem regarding types of list. First of all I have a stored procedure in my DB which does a select of a single column and I try to proceed it in my app in VB. By making a method function I declared a DataTable that loads through the SqlCommand(with the CloseConnection behavior). After that I publicly declared a List(Of String) which needs to be populated with the rows/items from the stored procedure that is on the way. Below is my snippet of the code:
Dim dt As New DataTable()
Try
If conn.State = ConnectionState.Open Then
[Code]....
It's LPrefix = collection.Cast(Of String)() where I get an exception error telling me that I can't really convert it. The old fashion way is to iterate with for/for each loop but that's not what I want for best use of performance especially if the list will have thousands of rows from a single column. So basically, I want to insert those items from that DataTable to the List(Of String) without For/For Each loop.
Running on VisualStudio2010 Ultimate, .NET FrameWork 4.0.
I have the following problem in VB.net. I have a string like Dim str as String = "ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWX" now i want to add a delimiter from any one of them (Comma, Hyphen, Slash, Tab) into the string at the specified position like after every One, Two and so on characters. i WANT THE RESULTANT STRING LIKE

I am working on finishing up a mvc 3 vb.net app... I have to parse about 2000 entries in a database and get the string value to the right of a " : " delimiter from one of the columns... Everything to the left I am not worried about but I need the value that is to the right of the colon for that item.. I have more issues involving needing to select string characters to the right or left of a delimiter... But if someone can show me how to achieve the above I can figure out the rest from there...
a example of the string is Jackson Smokehouse Fish Food:John Jacob JinggleHimer Schmit I would want to eliminate the first part of the string or just select the second part and put it in a variable for later processing...
I want to split a string at a delimiter, but I don't want to discard the delimiter; It needs to become its own variable. [code] Is there any way of achieving this short of writing my own method?

How can I convert a csv string into a list in vb.net?
I have the following code:

The intention is to convert an IList of custom objects to a string equivalent comprising each element in the Ilist. Unfortunately I can't seem to find a way to get the underlying data of the custom object, and of course as in the above example, using object simply gives me a string of types definitions, rather than access to the underlying data.
lets say I have a string that I want to split based on several characters, like ".", "!", and "?". How do I figure out which one of those characters split my string so I can add that same character back on to the end of the split segments in question?
Dim linePunctuation as Integer = 0
Dim myString As String = "some text. with punctuation! in it?"
For i = 1 To Len(myString)

I have an string that is returned from an xml file and looks similar to this name1="test 1" name2="test2" name3="test 3".I want to split this into 3 elements of key=value. I can't just split using a space because some of my values may contain spaces, e.g., test 1.So, I'd like to split the string using the " before the space. I've tried many variations but can't figure out the correct syntax to specify that my split characters are a " followed by a space. For instance, I've tried text.split({""" "}) but that returns elements split by " and ignores the space after the ".It shouldn't be this difficult. Can someone please help me with the correct syntax?

Quote:
057359-001 Pip Drt329 Auburndale, Fl (aub) - Pompano Beach, Fl (pob) 1:0 10gbe Lan Phy.
MyArr(0) ends up "057359-001" which is correct.
MyArr(1) ends up "Pip" only which is incorrect.

When the user clicks any item in the listbox ie lviproducts it passes that item to a textbox. The problem is that I want everything before the $ sign not to appear so only the amount ie 4.50 etc would appear in the textbox. So far I have no idea how to do this, but have the following code which is not working at all.

Normally, I'd choose List<String> [or, in VB, List(Of String)] over StringCollection whenever possible: see also Best string container.
However, as it seems, generics — and hence, List<String> — are apparently not supported in VS 2008's settings designer. Therefore, if I want to use a list of strings in my user settings, I have to resort to using a StringCollection there.
Now as I don't want to see StringCollection throughout my code, I need to convert it to List<String>. How do I do this efficiently? Or, even better, am I mistaken and there is a way to use List<String> in settings designer?
I am trying to Add the name of every folder in a directory to a combobox as a string to use in other code. Then I would like to truncate the last 3 characters off of the folder names.Example:
My main directory is C:Main
My sub folders are C:MainsubOne_bp
C:MainsubTwo_bp
C:MainsubThree_bp
I want a combo box with the following added durring run time.
subOne
subTwo
subThree
The following code will get me the folder names in the combo box, BUT it will not truncate the _bp off of the end and they are added as IO.DirectoryInfo that cannot be used as a string in other tasks.
Dim dir As String = "C:Main"
If (System.IO.Directory.Exists(dir)) Then
Dim di_dir As New IO.DirectoryInfo(dir)

I am looking for a way to convert my List(Of string) into an Object in vb. So in the end it would be the same as declaring Dim cArray() As Object = new Object. Can anyone point me to how i can achieve this? I cannot use the LINQ .ToArray as that creates a string array and this is not acceptable for my work. I need to pass this object into another one that has the parameter (aArray as Object).
View 4 RepliesWhat would be the simplest way to find the n-th position of delimiter in a string. For example, say, I have a string variable called FullFilePath that contains the path of a file, like, C:SourceFiles<mthyr><subject><filename>.txt From this, I would like to extract out mthyr, subject, and filename, using the delimiter, "".
I was hoping string.IndexOf would let me find the n-th position of the delimiter "", in which case I can use the result to do a string.Substring. But it looks like IndexOf only finds the first occurence of a certain string, which means I would have to interate this somehow to look for the n-th occurence.
Or is there another method that will help me do this more efficiently.
How should I split a string separated by a multi-character delimiter in VB?
i.e. If my string is say - Elephant##Monkey, How do I split it with "##" ?
I have a multiline textbox which I need to split into an array using new line as a delimiter, I've tried what I think should work but it doesn't:
HTML
Dim strArr() As String
strArr = TextBox2.Text.Split(Environment.NewLine)
eally been struggling with this one, and i cant seem to find a simple method of doing it...surely there must be one? I have a list of values that i am loading into a variable. I am trying to split that variable by the whitespace that separates each value...the only thing is the whitespace varies in size. eg.
View 3 RepliesI want to convert a List (of Long) into a string array.
Reason: it's a list of database IDs and I want to make a comma delimited string to pass into a stored proc.I tried this:
Dim commaDelimitedList As String = String.Join(",", itemIDList.Cast(Of String)().ToArray)
but I'm clearly not using the Cast correctly since it throws an exception:
System.InvalidCastException: Unable to cast object of type 'System.Int64' to type 'System.String'..
Is there a way to get Cast working for this, or am I stuck with ConvertAll and a delegate function?
I have a string like
human, roti, makan, ghar, house, language, english, india, US, master, teacher, html, code, asp, jsp
i need code for find the input string.
I used a built in function to create comma separated string using List easily.(It is not split and join but new function) I'm not able to recollect or find it. If some one knows about it and uses it please post a link to that. Framework - .net 2.0
(It is not Join or split - I know about this, .net has new built in function to create CSV format)
Check Jacob G Answer below for what i was looking for let me know your thoughts on it compared to join ;)
And whoever gave me -ve rep need to keep some patience and not hurry
I'm trying to write two regex's - you'll need to tell me if they're even possible. Both are based on VB.net syntax.
Regex 1:
The string I'm testing against -
Size on disk: 25,754,900,936 bytes
It has a handful of leading spaces, but the text is ALWAYS the same. I'm trying to extract out just the number (25,754,900,936).
I've tried a handful of regex's, but I can't get everything on one line. The commas are messing me up and returning multiple matches (For example, d+W+ gives me four matches, one for each set of numbers separated by commas.)
The best I've done is [0-9/,]* but that gives me 25 empty matches and one match (On match 19) of the number. I need this to match on match 1.
