Application Version Code Not Work In VB 2008 Express Edition?
Oct 19, 2009I create a new Windows Forms application and add an AboutBox form which is built-in into Visual Studio. I add a button to Form1 to show the AboutBox when clicked.The AboutBox form has a label with the text "Version" on it. The following code is supposed to add the application's version to that label at run-time:
Me.LabelVersion.Text = String.Format("Version {0}", My.Application.Info.Version.ToString)When the application version is changed in the Publish tab of the My Project form to 2-0-3-6, the version on the AboutBox at run-time stays at 1.0.0.0 (of course after rebuilding).
Even when the application is published to the desktop, it still does not work. It does, however, reflect the correct version number in the title of a subfolder in the Applications folder that is created when the application is published.
MS VS(vb) '08 Express Include External Files For Read/write Access?
Dec 2, 2009I am using Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition. Some of the programs I am writing make extensive use of External files (saved games, data, item lists, etc.) I could use an easy way to get these files to ride allong during deployment (cd mostly). adding them to the resources works for some static pictures, but custom structures into lists of info to read and write from are beond that features abilities, same with the settings feature. I have found in other help referance to "MageUI.exe" so is downloading a .net SDK my solution or is there a better trick I can use?

Oct 3, 2011I'm just using the default SQL Server Express in my vb 2008 express edition as my database server for my database operation. When I tried to update the records on my table I got a runtime error which indicates the error on this line 'myCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()'and it highlights a yellow background on it. The runtime error says "SqlException was unhandled: An expression of non-boolean type specified in a context where a condition is expected, near 'Number'. ".

This works fine.What I need to know is why can't I use Me.MDIChildren(0)I thought that using SetParent would increase the number of children by 1, thus allowing me to reference it with the above code, but it shows there are no children in the array.I have been trying, without luck, for 2 days to try to maximize an external app being displayed in my app. I can get it to display, but I would love it if it could Dock to the same size as its container (a panel)

AOL Instant Messenger I havent used this application in a long time. But i remembered if you wanted to add a friend to AIM from their online profile it directed them to a link such as:
aim:addfriend=contactID and AIM would pick this up and add it the contactID to the application. The link i posted is more than likely not the correct link they use but it shows what im trying to accomplish.

Jun 3, 2011I'm trying to use the Shell to have my application call an external application but its not working...I don't understand why. I get the following error: 'System.windows.shell' is a namespace and cannot be used as an expression!

Center An External Application Using .net?
Mar 23, 2012how to center an external app on the screen, an example would be Adobe Reader, using either Process.Start or Shell. I've 'attempted' both but haven't found anything to control the position. I've also found some code using Api32 functions, FindWindow, MoveWindow, etc, but have not been successful at those either.

Mar 17, 2009I have looked all over for an answer to this question and have failed to find one. I have two applications. App1: I have no control over anything in this application aside from standard user inteface options. (Enter text, apply, ok) Someone else has created this program and I have no direct access to the database or any code. I can not make any changes to this application.App2: This is the application that I am currently creating. All changes will need to be made here.I currently have a program set up to copy information from App2 to App1. A user clicks a button in App2 and then goes to App1 and hits F8. App2 is waiting to get F8 and when it does it proceeds to use a series of sendkeys to enter the information from App2 into App1.Question 1: Is there a better way to get info from App2 into App1?I am trying to "smarten" my program up a bit. I would like it to read fields from App1 and compare them to certain variables and then do an action. I have tried to use sendkeys to copy from App1. This sometimes works, and other times the clipboard says object not collected it is not a valid format. So this method is obviously not reliable enough for me.Question 2: How do I copy data from a text box in App1? Sendkeys seems to not work. Again, keep in mind that I don't know textbox names in App1 so as far as I know, I can't do anything like textbox1.copy.

Referencing/managing/code For Different Versions Of The Same External Assemblies?
Aug 16, 2011In a VB.NET (3.5) Windows Forms application that, among other things, creates Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) Packages, we want to be able to support the creation of packages both for SQL Server 2005 and 2008. To create packages compatible with SQL Server 2005, functionality from external Microsoft assemblies with the specific version of 9.0.242.0 are needed, and to create packages compatible with SQL Server 2008 the same assemblies need to be referenced, but with another version number, 10.0.0.0. There does not, unfortunately, seem to be backwards compatibility in that SQL-2005 packages could be created using functionality in the newer 10.0.0.0-assemblies.
Today, we have a very inefficient way of handling this. For each new release of the app, we have to: Build two different versions of the app, one "2005-compatible .exe" and one "2008-compatible .exe", by: Manually add/remove the specific 2005/2008-references at project level (properties).Comment/uncomment respective code that is not common between the two versions of the same assemblies.At installation time of the application, figure out if the machine runs SQL Server 2005 or 2008 and then install the corresponding build/version of the app.We do not ship or install any assemblies with our application but instead rely/pre-requisite on that the machine on which we install our software has either the 2005 or 2008 assemblies installed in its GAC (depending on whether SQL Server 2005 or 2008 is installed there).
I have learned that with a few tricks it is possible to reference and use identically named assemblies with different version-numbers in the very same project. But even then if we manage to do this, since the client machine always will only have only one set of the assemblies installed in its GAC (9.0.242.0 or 10.0.0.0 versions depending on which SQL Server version it has installed), and we need to reference both sets in the project to have "full support" for both 2005 and 2008, how can we avoid potential "missing dll-messages" when the client runs the app? We do not feel very excited about having to ship/install 2005-assemblies on a 2008-server and vice-versa, that would never be used by the application, even if this would constitute a solution to the above problem.

May 19, 2012I want to be able to activate my application through my website. Like AIM, they have a protocol "aim?.." what ever, I was wondering how I might go about that? My application is standalone, I wonder if this would reduce the chances of this being possible.

Jan 20, 2012I am automating 3rd party simulation software. The simulation is contained in a DLL. The DLL is programmed to interface though Excel. (Yes I have tried to use the dll outside of Excel, but other factors don't allow it. I have also asked the author to capture the error and recompile the dll)
VB.NET Application

Sometimes a runtime error occurs in the DLL and a dialgo box is created. "On Resume Next" in excel does not bypass the error, nor can I trap this error in the VB.NET application. Currently, if the simulation does not complete in 5 seconds (the DLL error has been thrown and a dialog box is present), I terminate excel application in the following pseudo code manner:
1) Excel.Quit (quit method of the Excel application object model; does not close excel, no error thrown)
2) FinalReleaseComObject() (for all the object references to Excel, workbooks, ranges, etc) <- a
3) Set all excel references to nothing
4) System.Diagnostics.Process.GetProcessById(MyClass.procID).Kill()
A RaceOnRCWCleanup is detected (An attempt has been made to free an RCW that is in use. The RCW is in use on the active thread or another thread. Attempting to free an in-use RCW can cause corruption or data loss.) when releasing the Excel application (the other object references do not cause this warning). Is this caused by Excel still being open? I have tried to "find" the error dialog box and close it with some SendKeys, but the an System.InvalidOperationException is thrown: SendKeys cannot run inside this application because the application is not handling Windows messages. Either change the application to handle messages, or use the SendKeys.SendWait method.
I have tried:
1) MyClass.xla.Dialogs.Application.SendKeys("{ESCAPE}")
2) MyClass.xla.Application.SendKeys("{ESCAPE}")
3) MyClass.xla.SendKeys("{ESCAPE}")

Set Position And Size Of An External Application
Apr 23, 2009I am trying to reposition and resize an application I have launched. The hwnd is extracted from the process that is returned from the application start. The call to the Windows API MoveWindow() call moves the window to the top of my screen and collapses it to the height of the title bar.
The x position appears to be correct and the width appears to be correct, but the y position and the height are not correct. I may have the wrong signature (but I don't think so) or there is something I don't understand about the call.[code...]
