VB, Passing And Returning Arrays From Functions?

Nov 27, 2009

I ran into an error when trying to do this:

Code: ChartBuffer = GetCurrentChart(ChartBuffer) The error says Conversion from type 'Integer()' to type 'Integer' is not valid.

Apparently I have some type casting issues, the problem is I'm not trying to cast any types at all. I'm trying to set one array chartbuffer equal to the array returned from GetCurrentChart.

[Code]...

In the constructor of this class I am trying to set the buffer equal to the loaded chart because if I try to write information to a buffer that isn't already initialized, and then save it, it will overwrite stuff that might already be saved in the file as 0's or something, and I don't want it to do that. To prevent this from happening I'm simply going to initialize the buffer in the constructor by setting it equal to the loaded chart. Finally after that is all done I can write new information to the buffer and save it to the file without writing a mostly empty buffer (full of zero's) to the chart that is saved with information in it already.

Passing Arrays To Functions?

Apr 18, 2010

I'm trying to pass an array from a 2D Array to a function that takes a 1D array, but each time I do I get the error Number of indices is less than the number of dimensions of the indexed array.. I know using a structure would solve the problem, but unfortunately the assignment is to use a 2D Array instead of a structure. I've declared the 2D array as such:

Const MAX_ARR_SIZE = 63
Public HouseholdCollection(MAX_ARR_SIZE, 2) As UInteger
Const IDENTIFICATION_CODE = 0
Const MEMBER_COUNT = 1

Passing Arrays Through Fortran Dll From App Turning To Single Element Arrays?

Feb 2, 2010

I have a VB.net console app and I am opening a function in a dll written in fortran. I am passing 3 arrays through the function by reference. When they come back out the otherside they ahve all tunred to arrays of only one element And that element is 0.I read on the internet somewhere that when doing this kind of thing it is a good idea to only pass the first element of the array into the function.I tried changing my function declaration to accepting single elements rather than single dimensional arrays, and now the arrays are the same length before and after the function call, but they don't seem to be changing at all, so i'm not sure that this is working

Get A Compiler Warning For Functions Returning Value Types, Without Return Statement

Jul 21, 2009

I've just been burned again by the fact that there is no compiler warning when you fail to return a result in a Function that returns a Value type. I wrote the function:

Public Function CompareTo(ByVal other As MessageIndex) As Integer Implements System.IComparable(Of MessageIndex).CompareTo
Me._messageIndex.CompareTo(other._messageIndex)
End Function

which performs the CompareTo Function for two integers, then throws the result away and returns 0, because I forgot to either assign a value to CompareTo, or use Return, and that isn't flagged by the compiler because it's valid VB for a Value type.

I happen never to use "FunctionName = ReturnValue" because it hides information from maintenance programmers and also because I think it's insane .

Is there any way I can get the compiler to issue a warning whenever my Functions are missing a Return, whether it's a Value type or not?

Passing Data Between Functions?

Jun 8, 2012

I would like to have custom methods to pass data between function, or to keep it in memory throughout the program.

Example:

Private function info()
Addr1 = addr1.text
Addr2 = addr2.text
City = city.text

[code]....

Could I run this function towards the beginning of the program and use it throughout until the form is disposed? I can't seem to get the information to stick once I get out of the function, I will need to use the same information multiple times throughout the application so I figured if I could make a function to keep the info rather than declaring the 5 lines in every option but anytime I call the method, it fills it correctly then when I get back to the main function the info goes back to 'nothing'. is it possible to pass data around between functions like you could in Java?

Pass A Variable's Name Along With The Value When Passing Through Functions?

Jul 6, 2009

I want to know if it's possible to retrieve the variables name from when it was passed into a certain function. For example, if I call parseId(myId) to a function with the signature parseId(id), i can obviously retrieve the value of 'id'. However, is there any way I can retrieve 'myId' as a string (without passing it as another value)? Specifically in vb.net, but I'm interested in how it would work in any given language.

Program Using Arrays And Functions - Highest / Lowest Number

Jun 14, 2012

I am new to using VB2010 (and coding in general). Also brand new to these forums . Okay so I am making a program that: allows the user enter the number of customers served for each of 12 months into an array. The application should calculate and display the following statistics: total number of customers for the year, the average monthly number of customers, and the months with the highest and lowest numbers of customers. Use inputBox to get user input. Do not accept non-numeric or negative numbers.

The problem that I am having is that I do not know how to display which was the best and worst month. I imagine I need something that targets the highest/lowest number and finds the text in the corresponding index but I'm not sure how to do this.

Passing Subs And Functions With Varying Signatures Into A Class

Dec 28, 2011

I have a number of unrelated subs and functions that do various things on my server (e.g. Lighting control, data caching, server maintenance, etc). They are all in various classes which I have coalesced into a single solution.My goal is to create a single, simple interface which each of these disparate classes can be integrated and called from a command line interface. Instead of hard-coding a longish case statement which parses arguments and passes them to the various subs, I wanted to make a generic class which can be instantiated with a minimum of information and put into a data structure. Ideally, adding a new function would involve:

1.) Providing the function pointer (Delegate). The delegates will have various signatures. This is the crux of the question.

2.) Providing ancillary info such as the command-line callable name, number of arguments, argument types, etc.

I have a 100% working class called "node" which is basically a hierarchical tree of node instances. I can use this to simply organize function calls in related branches. All is working quite well.NodeFunctionDelegate(ByVal args As String) As String.The node takes the arguments passed to it by the command line and sends it as the "args" string as comma-separated. The delegate function then needs to know how to split up these comma-separated values, type them, tryparse them and etc. It then must return some string.It works, but it involves writing a middle-man function stub which can receive the argument string from the node class, do the parsing and type checking, and then call the destination function.My goal is to eliminate this trivial middle-man function. The problem is, I can't figure out how to create a variable-signature delegate for the node class.

[VS2005] SafeArrayTypeMismatchException - Passing Two Structures Arrays And Other Single Values

Sep 29, 2008

I have written a ActiveX DLL in VB 6 which is like -

[Code]...

When I do this everything works fine and I am able to pass value to dll. I am passing two structures arrays and other single values like int and double etc. So far so good. But when I insert this code in another application (created in same vb.net 2005) where I actually intent it to use then i get the following error -

System.Runtime.InteropServices.SafeArrayTypeMismatchException
Specified array was not of the expected type.

I am puzzled as to why is this happening. I checked basic settings and they are same. In short the code works if i create a new project and go on but does not work and gives error if I insert in an existing application's code where i wanna use. To test I created a dll without passing structure arrays and then it worked in that application.

Define Initialized Arrays In Functions And Return Values Based On User Input Visual Basic?

Apr 4, 2011

In this application I need to allow users to enter a month as integer (1-12) then use integer tryparse to validate that input, that seems to be the easy part. I need two create two functions, one that returns the name of the month and the other returns the number of days in that month. The arrays are supposed to be defined and initialized within the function so that the main program can take the user input and call the two functions, then return the appropriate values as output to labels. I am not sure how to declare the arrays in their appropriate functions and then how to call those functions to retrieve the right value from the function.

VB6 Used Recordsetsor Arrays - .Net Framework In VB2010. Datasets, Dataviews. Tableadapters, Arrays. Enums ?

May 9, 2010

In VB6 I load a recordset containg all of the records (6 fields per record)in a table into an XArray and then manipulate the records in the array and then write them back to the original table. The array issorted by the first field (1 to maybe 8000 or more) I need to find records in the array by an ID field and then move them (because of some external criteria that happens many times) from say number 400 to number 375. Then all of the other records between 375 and 399 were renumbered up 1 to fill the gaps left by the move.

The XArray worked well as it could find and also move to a next record easily to facilitate the revisions to each record quickly. Everything is done in VB6 in code and nothing visual needs to be shown to the user until say 2000 of these external changes are complete. What is the best, most efficient way to do this in the .Net framework in VB2010. Datasets, Dataviews. tableadapters, arrays. enums ?
