VS 2005 - App Freezes When MySQL Connector Executes Query
May 25, 2009
I am am currently developing an application using Visual Basic 2005 and I am also using the .NET MySQL Connector. I have noticed that when the MySQL Connector executes a query the application freezes for a bit so I was wondering if it is possible to create another application with textboxes, labels, etc, that will be hidden and will execute these queries, but the main application will be able to read and modify data on the hidden application so that it won't freeze.

What i have going on, is i have a MySQL connector as a resource on my application, and im basically trying to connect to my MySQL server, to either a) register a new account, or b) check that the account exists and they are premium, and login, Now what i have run into problems with is: My MySQL Database Name has a _ in it which VB is not allowing for some strange reason.
The code i am using is below
Imports MySql.Data.MySqlClient
Public Class Form1
Function UpdateRecord(ByVal query As String) As Integer
[CODE]...
How i can allow the _ into the application, because the only databases that don't have a _ in the user or dbname are a) Paid ones which i DO NOT have the money for or self hosted ones, i cannot leave my computer on 24/7

I am developing an application with VB using the MySQL Connector Net [URL]. Now each time I go to load data in to a datagridview or in to text boxes on a form, I have to provide something along the lines of:
Private Sub btnSave_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnSave.Click
'Create connection to MySQL Database
Dim conn As New MySqlConnection
Dim myCommand As New MySqlCommand
conn.ConnectionString = MySQLGlobal
[Code] .....
I think it would be better to leave the connection open to the MySQL database while the application is in use. That way I can just continue to execute queries of inserting and updating, without having the delay of the application having to reconnect. Is there a way where I can create some sort of background task in the application that monitors every few seconds that the connection is still active, and if not it tries to reconnect until its reconnected? I am trying to have it so that then I can code it to just do queries, and when the connection breaks - it disables the form until it is reconnected.

I have one multi-row INSERT statement (300 or so sets of values) that I would like to commit to the MySQL database in an all-or-nothing fashion. insert into table VALUES
(1, 2, 3),
(4, 5, 6),
(7, 8, 9);
In some cases, a set of values in the command will not meet the criteria of the table (duplicate key, for example). When that happens I do not want any of the previous sets added to the database. I've implemented this with the following code, however, my rollback command doesn't appear to be making a difference. I've used this documentation: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/es/connector-net-examples-mysqltransaction.html
Dim transaction As MySqlTransaction = sqlConnection.BeginTransaction()
sqlCommand = New MySqlCommand(insertStr, sqlConnection, transaction)
Try
[code]....
I get the DUPLICATE KEY exception thrown, no Rollback Exception thrown, and every set of values up to duplicate key committed to the database.

I've got a vb app that writes data to a remote mysql database.
When I run the app on a client that does not have the mysql connector it crashes (obviously)
How do I programatically check if the connector is installed on the client and throw up a nice error advising to install it - instead of the unhandled exception error - could not load mysql.data etc error?

So, what I'm trying to do is to connect to a remote database using the MySQL connector. Dim c As New MySqlConnection c.ConnectionString = "Server=" & URL & ";Database=" & "" & ";Uid=root" & ";password =" & "" c.Open()I know the connection string is correct. I can access the phpMyAdmin through a web-browser just fine. For some reason however trying to open the connection throws an exception 'Unable to connect to any of the specified MySQL hosts'. I tried disabling the VS debugging process, as I thought maybe it's blocking my MySQL access for some reason, but no.

I've spent a whole day on this already without figuring it out. I'm hoping somebody can help me translate the following MySQL query to work for SQL Server 2005:
SELECT MAX ( messages.date ) AS maxdate,
topics.id AS topicid, topics.*, users.*
FROM messages, topics, users WHERE messages.topic_id
= topics.id AND topics.user_id = users.id AND
topics.forum_id = " . $forumid . " GROUP BY
messages.topic_id ORDER BY maxdate DESC
$forumid is a QueryString value defined in the following VB.NET code-behind code:
forumName.Text = "<a href='ViewForum.aspx?forumid=" & row.id & "'>" & row.name & "</a>"

I have an application which runs quite good, only once every X minutes it totally freezes, and even when running debug mode from within the VS2005 IDE, Visual studio becomes unresponsive. After pressing the pause-button to see where the app might be stuck, a messagebox saying "Unable to break execution" might pop-up after a minute or two. My app uses some timers, threads, and threadpool calls. So I'm afraid I got a deadlock somewhere, although I can not find it. Is there any way to find out where my app might hang?
Note: I synclocked every routine with a dedicated object, and for queues or arraylists, I even used the synchronized methods to modify them. I don't use recursive routines, so they cannot deadlock themselves. The strange thing (to me) is that all of my app hangs, none of the threads seems to be running, nor background, nor the GUI and even the VS environment.

I have a query from within my vb.net code which searchs for a record by date. The date being entered via the code is in format dd/mm/yyyy, i need to search in the database using yyyy/mm/dd? Ideally i thought there may just be a function within MySQL which will convert this. If not in vb.net to convert the string 01/01/2011 to 2011/01/01?

If I run a MySQL query at the same time I have a timer going, the timer lags, even though the query is on a seperate form. My computer has 8GB of RAM, so I doubt that that's the issue. Does VB stop the timer to run the query intentionally? Is there a way to prevent the timer from stopping/ lagging?

My problem is, when I query by a usual ID, like number with no segments = 1234567890, it works nicely.
But I need to query by some kind of segmented values or ID as = 123-4567-890, when I try by 123-4567-890 this id it does not query anything in mysql although in the database this 123-4567-890 ID is present.
So what is the possible solution to search by segmented value in mysql in VB.NET Here is below, my trying codes in vb

I am trying to to an insert query on my MySql db using VS 2008/VB. I have this query: Insert into allservices StartDate....) values ('" & Me.datesched.Value & "', ....) When I use the single and double quotes, as it is above , I get this error: Quote: Incorrect date value '21/10/2009' for column StartDate at row 1
when I remove the single quotes and have only the double ones I get a completely different thing. The date inserted to the database is 01/01/0001. Even if my datetimepicker has a min and max date. Also if someone has any good links on using mysql with vb.net

I'm just wondering if it's possibe to get the results from a query and then assign the results to a variable. So I will run a query which will return the names of the tables stored in the database, then I want them to be stored in a variable. So it would be something along the lines of:
Dim strFrom AS String = "FROM "
strQuery = "SELECT * FROM information_schema.TABLES WHERE TABLE_SCHEMA = 'Database1'"
con.Open()

I am getting a syntax error for the code below.I am trying to create a user in the mysql database and add their information to a datagrid control all in one button click using two statements; one to create the actual user, and one to add the user and their additional information to a table on the database and then refresh the datasource which will display the new user's information in the datagrid control.
If anyone knows where i went wrong please feel free to critique my code and let me know; or simply offer more efficient alternatives to what im hoping to achieve.
For those of you that must know, i am running the latest version of MySql server, MySql Workbench, and Visual Basic 2010 Express on a windows 7 based laptop. I'm writing this program in VB.net.
