VS 2005 Save Settings Database Connection And ComboBox Selection?

Jan 15, 2010

I have a program that reads a database file(.csv or.Txt) then allows user to select data from 6 different comboxes and taext boxes are then populated based on the selection made from combobox

I would like to be able to give the user the option to save their settings so next time the program is open it will connect to the same database as the last connection and also have comboboxes go to the last selection Do I have to create a save setting value for each combobox? and the connection string?

is there a simple way to just save everything? so when the program is open it goes back to the last time it was open.

Application.Settings VB 2005 - Save Arrays Using The Settings System Object

Jan 14, 2009

I just wondered if you can or can't save arrays using the settings system object. There seems to be no way of entering it at designtime. It seems implied you cannot create new user settings.subobjects at runtime. I'm looking to find the easiest way to save a populated array of PictureBox's. If the only way is a self/custom made/managed .ini file then I need to know so i can start on that but I was hoping to use some of all this phaff in the new frameworks usefully.

VS 2008 Save Combobox Selection On Close/load?

Mar 19, 2010

i had this working and i foudn the info on this forum, but i cant for the life of me renemebr how to do it, and searching for the thread all i can find is this:

[URL]

Which is not it, the method i used only involved a few clicks per item to set up and it made it so what ever selection was chosen in a combobox for example was saved, and then that selection was loaded on the apps next run, i know i had to do something in the application setting/databinding area of the properties.

Saving New Selection From Combobox To SQL Database?

Jun 17, 2010

I have an app I'm working on with multiple forms. One of the forms, frmLocationInfo, has textboxes and comboboxes which are automatically populated based on a combobox selection from a previous form, frmLocations. I've been able to get any changes made to frmLocationInfo's textboxes to save to the SQL database, however, when attempting to select a different item from any of its comboboxes, it's not saving to the database and instead, I receive a "Procedure or function...has too many arguments specified" error.

Here is the code for the Save button:

VS 2005 Make The Calculate Funtion Work Up Selection Change In Combobox?

I have a calculate function that adds twenty text boxes together a+b, etc... 20 +20, B changes value when a selection in combobx is changed, how can i make the calculate funtion work up selection change in combobox ? You would think the selection change or index change , but that doesnt work because the tetbox doesnt actually get the new value till after the combo selection is made, so you actually have to go and make the selection twice I know i can put the code in the textbox value change , but i dont want to do that for 20 text boxes and i am assuming there must be a BETTER way?

When I check the .config file, the entry under

<BE.IS.My.MySettings>
<setting name="SomeString" serializeAs="String">

... the value remained the same, unchanged.1 thing though, my app is started via Sub Main() in module file, instead of "Enable application framework". Does this affect the saving of Settings file?

[2005] Settings Save Even If Re-located?

Mar 12, 2009

I always wondered, but is there a way to get My.Settings to save even when you move a program, such as copy it to another location? Maybe its just me but whenever I use My.Settings in an application, copying it into a different directory will reset all the settings, which kind of sucks. Is there anyway to get the values to stay in the application no matter what? If not My.Settings, than is there any way to store a value to a program so that you don't have to use external files, but so that it will remember the settings even when copied?

Storing A Database Connection String Into Settings In A .net DLL Data Layer?

Mar 4, 2011

I've always used this approach while implementing data layer DLL for web application:

1) put datasets into the dll project
2) use a helper class with a method like this:

public shared sub settCnnStr(strconnhere as string)
My.Settings.Item("connectionString") = strconnhere
end sub

3) when I need to use the dll I call a method like this (usually into global.asax):

xxxxxxx.helper.setCnnStr("yyyyyyyyyyyyyy")

This method always worked for me nicely but I'd like to know if this method could have serious drawback or if there's a better solution.

VS 2008 - Store The Connection String In A Settings Table In The Database?

Apr 20, 2010

I am storing my connection string in my app.config file. I am using sql server express 2005. The connection string on my dev machine is different from the ones at the clients. so each time I update I open the config file and edit the connection string setting. This is quite a pain.also I have now published my app to an ftp folder so that the clients can get the updates each time I make changes. saves me the hassle of going to them each time i update. so now i need it to be so that I won't have to change the setting all the time.Would the best way be to store the connection string in a settings table in the database?

Combobox - When Select A Value From The Combobox The Selection Won't Validate?

Feb 22, 2012

I'm having a problem with combo boxes. I usually use Java and it's been awhile since I used VB but I never remember having this much difficulty. My application is using an SDF file. From Data Sources, I drag the details on one of my Tables to my Form to get all of the fields. Three of them are comboboxes. Each of the three is an INT64 and each corresponds to a primary key in a different table. I click the tasks button on a combobox and for data source I select the appropriate table that has the data to go with the combobox, for display member I select the field that I want users to see, and for value member I select the primary key. Then I run a quick test and start the app, open the form, and add a new record. When I select a value from the combobox the selection won't validate because it doesn't think it's an INT64 like it should be. It seems to be using the display member as the actual value instead because if I change display member to the primary everything works great.
