Application.Settings VB 2005 - Save Arrays Using The Settings System Object
Jan 14, 2009
I just wondered if you can or can't save arrays using the settings system object. There seems to be no way of entering it at designtime. It seems implied you cannot create new user settings.subobjects at runtime. I'm looking to find the easiest way to save a populated array of PictureBox's. If the only way is a self/custom made/managed .ini file then I need to know so i can start on that but I was hoping to use some of all this phaff in the new frameworks usefully.

i have created a user setting named 'setmeup' as string, scope = user, value = "magical meow meow!".in my code i access it and assign it a new value like this...my.settings.setmeup = "howdy cowboy!"my.settings.save()application.restart()when the application restarts, i expect the my.settings.setmeup = "howdy cowboy!" but when i check its contents its still "magical meow meow!".but when i use application.exit() instead of application.restart() and manually restart the program, my.settings.setmeup = "howdy cowboy!" which is correct.what must i do? i want to use application.restart() because i don't want the users to double-click the icon again to start the program. i want the program to restart automatically.

I'm trying to save a collection of key/value settings in my application's "user settings" (they're column widths), but while I see no errors, when I run the code (in the IDE) my collection in "My.Settings" is always nothing at startup. I do a "My.Settings.Save" when the application exits, and barring the "serializers not found" errors in the IDE, no other errors occur. When I run my application as an exe, it behaves the same way..

Is there a way to maintain application modified Settings in the settings files after a program update? i.e. I have 10 or so values in the settings file and the users can modify them... when I send a program update they revert back to what I initially programmed them to be.

I've updated my settings via:
My.Settings.SomeString = "new text"
then I call
My.Settings.Save()
When I check the .config file, the entry under
<userSettings>
<BE.IS.My.MySettings>
<setting name="SomeString" serializeAs="String">
[code]....
... the value remained the same, unchanged.1 thing though, my app is started via Sub Main() in module file, instead of "Enable application framework". Does this affect the saving of Settings file?

I always wondered, but is there a way to get My.Settings to save even when you move a program, such as copy it to another location? Maybe its just me but whenever I use My.Settings in an application, copying it into a different directory will reset all the settings, which kind of sucks.Is there anyway to get the values to stay in the application no matter what? If not My.Settings, than is there any way to store a value to a program so that you don't have to use external files, but so that it will remember the settings even when copied?

I have a custom settings file that I designed using the designer. In my form, I have a function that creates a new instance of this settings by using a dim statement. Then I add this new settings object to a hashtable. After I exit this function, I no longer have access to the settings object without using the hashtable to retrieve it. If I want to remove the object from the hashtable, I can do a simple remove but the settings object still exists somewhere in memory. How can I dispose of this object as well since it inherits from ApplicationSettingsBase and does not have a built in Dispose() function?

I am starting to use cryptostream class. I may be wrong, if you encrypt something, close the app, and then try to decrypt it, it will not be able to because a different key will be generated. Because I do need this functionality, I am wondering if it's possible to save the key in application settings and whether this is the right way to go?

(using VB.Net 2008) I am trying to save one of my custom types to the application settings. I've read a variety of opinions on the internet about whether this possible.
When creating an app setting, none of my types appear when browsing. However, previously I needed to save off one of my datasets, and it worked simply by hand-entering it as the setting type (ie, I just typed "MyProjectName.DatasetName"). However, when I try the same trick with another custom type that isn't a dataset, I get a "type was not found" error. So I'm a little confused, can the program "find" some custom types and not others?

How do I save my settings in the same folder of my application is in .INI file.[code]And how do I delete the app.config folder in the AppData Local dir?Because what I noticed is.. It creates new folders everytime I release a new version of my application.It doesn't consume much space though but still it creates new folder corresponding to the application version.

I set up some application settings for checkboxes on an app and then decided to remove them. When I set the Application Settings to (none) in the designer and restarted the app, the checkbox constantly checks and unchecks itself. I completely remade the app and removed the file that is used to store my.settings in the Local folder of the user's appdata profile. I also made sure to uncheck the "save my.settings" on shutdown.

I'd like to store a set of key/value pairs in the application settings of my ASP.NET web app, but I'm not finding a straightforward way to do that. For example, these two questions tell me that StringDictionary etc. won't serialize to XML and suggest that I'll have to roll my own implementation. But it seems like this should be easier to do; after all, web.config is XML and < applicationSettings> is essentially a collection of key/value pairs, so it feels like I'm missing something obvious. Given my specific case below, do I really have to roll my own serialization, or is there an easier workaround?
The web app in question is a basic contact form that sends email to different recipients based on the value of a parameter; e.g. [URL]...The goal is to be able add or remove recipients (or change their addresses) by editing the web.config file so that I don't have to recompile and can easily maintain different configurations in test and production environments. For example:
// I can use something like this for the sender address SmtpMsg.From = New MailAddress(My.Settings.EmailSender)
// And then just edit this part of web.config to use different addresses in different environments.
<setting name="EmailSender" serializeAs="String"> <value>webcontact@exampledomain.com</value>
[Code]...

I'm pretty sure this has been answered on this thread before, but I'm having trouble searching for it, so I decided to make a new post. Anyway, My problem is that I have a Setting from "My.Settings.Navigation" that is a Specialized String Collection, and what I am trying to do is find a method in which I can attach "My.Settings.Navigation" to a ComboBox. I was also wondering if it was possible to make it only hold up to 20 items at a time?

I have a program that reads a database file(.csv or.Txt) then allows user to select data from 6 different comboxes and taext boxes are then populated based on the selection made from combobox
I would like to be able to give the user the option to save their settings so next time the program is open it will connect to the same database as the last connection and also have comboboxes go to the last selection Do I have to create a save setting value for each combobox? and the connection string?
is there a simple way to just save everything? so when the program is open it goes back to the last time it was open.

I have two different 2-dimensional arrays. I assume the setting i need to save them to is a string setting, as is the cast with regular integer arrays. The first 2-d array I need to save is an integer, the second a decimal.
Let's say the settings are called my.settings.2darray1 and my.settings.2darray2
Let's also say the arrays are:
vb
dim 2darray1(50, 99) as integer dim 2darray2(50, 99) as decimal
What would the code be to load each array and save each array?

I'm still doing upgrades on my program that i'm creating and i've run into a bump again. I'm currently using a multi-dimension array to store a name, email, password, email provider, and user name. These 5 values are stored, corresponding with the latter, meaning the array is build as: name 1....n user name 1....n user email 1....n user email provider 1....n password 1....n So my question is, how can i store this in My.Settings? To be clearer, i'll use code: My.Settings.Name = name My.Settings.UserName = userName etc..... My current set up for a first run is like so... My.Settings.Password = adminInfo(2, 0) My.Settings.UserName = admingInfo(1, 0) etc.

To use StringCollections instead of String Arrays for My.Settings. I've opened a file and have this:
CODE:
But I error on line 2, saying "Object Reference not set in Instance of an Object". So then, I try to use New before I go Into the loop: My.Settings.Trunk = New System.Collections.Specialized.StringCollection
But then i get "index outside bounds of array" still on line 2. This is weird to me. Is it because my StringCollection doesn't have an array size? If so how do i declare an array size for this? Or is this just so totally different from String Arrays?

The company has been using Visual Studio 2008 and .NET Framework 2.0 for approximately 2 years. During that time we released several versions (4.x.x) of our program to the public and were able to preserve the user's settings using My.Settings.Upgrade.During the past development cycle we upgraded the program to Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0 and changed the version to 5.x.x. Now, when a user upgrades from 4.x.x to 5.x.x they lose all of their settings.However, in all upgrades after that point (ie 5.0 to 5.1) all the user's settings are once again preserved.I checked C:Documents and Settings<USER_NAME>Local SettingsApplication DataCompanyName and it contains two directories:
ApplicationName_Url_aaa ApplicationName_Url_bbb
where aaa and bbb are 32 character strings. All of the user.config files for the 4.x.x releases can be found in the ApplicationName_ Url_aaa directory. All of the user.config files for the 5.x.x releases can be found in the ApplicationName_Url_bbb directory.Based on this information it seems like something changed when we converted our program to VS2010 and Framework4 that is now causing a different 32 character string to be generated. However, we have been unable to track it down.
