I am working on a simple game and wanted to save the high score in application settings. Research upon failure has shown that user is read/write but the program doesn't store it between runs.

I just finished making a Tetris game in VB.NET, and I wanted to add a high score system to the application. So, when a user completes their game, they have the option of submitting it as a high score, which will compare their score against the previous high scores, then place it accordingly. I was thinking of an XML approach of doing this, where the user's name, rank, score, level, and number of lines cleared will be stored in tags. Here is what I thought the XML might resemble:

So the program will have an array to store all the previous scores. It will read through the XML, and copy the the score data into this array. Then, when the time comes to submit a score, it will compare this score against those previous scores, and find the proper position for that score, and then save it into the array. At the end, it will then copy all the score data from this array to the XML, replacing the <Level>, <Lines>, and <User> tags in the process.I am however having trouble implementing this, as I have no experience with XML files and everything I've read has been very confusing.
I need to calculate the high score and am having trouble storing a value that represents the previous high score, and the comparator funcion.

View 2 RepliesIm creating a quiz game although i was wondering if any one can teach/tell me how to create a high score system.For example when the user clicks say button1 (which is stop quiz) an input box will appear asking the user to input their name and then press okay. It then gets the current score from the text box (which is just an integer in a text box indicating how many they got right) and saves it to an Text file or something.and when the user goes back to the main menu, he/she can select "Hall of Fame" which then brings up the highscores (in a new form) of previous users scores.
View 10 RepliesProgram : my game is a frogger port, you make the frog cross the road until you run out of lives. When you die, you are asked to enter your name and the name is appended to the end of file called names.txt, the final score is appended to the end of a file called scores.txt.Using the System.IO functions, i read the contents of each text file, and load the contents into two separate strings (one for names, one for scores. These two long strings are then broken down using Split() command, transferring the pieces into an array. (again 2 arrays - one for names, one for scores). The contents of both arrays are then loaded into 2 listboxes, 1 for scores, 1 for names.
Problem: i can sucessfully load the contents of both files, and display them side by side - but i want to re-arrange the scores so that they are in descending order. While doing this, i need to make sure that the player name matches up with the score - so the order of the names being displayed would have to be changed aswell. After spending many, many hours trying to do it myself i have had to give up - i'm clueless. My first issue is converting the score array into integers so that the array could be sorted, the second problem is then sorting the names so that the scores and names match up.
I just wondered if you can or can't save arrays using the settings system object. There seems to be no way of entering it at designtime. It seems implied you cannot create new user settings.subobjects at runtime. I'm looking to find the easiest way to save a populated array of PictureBox's. If the only way is a self/custom made/managed .ini file then I need to know so i can start on that but I was hoping to use some of all this phaff in the new frameworks usefully.

I currently have a who wants to be a millionaire game that I have made in visual basic 2010. Each question is in its own form. Form1 opens at the start, and question 1 is opened by a button click on Form1. The user has to click on the picture box at the side to show the text for the question each time. If they answer incorrectly, it displays a message box, opens an input box asking for their name, and goes to the form with the high score list, Form17.
Upon opening Form17, I want the scores to load and be displayed in the list box. The high scores are saved in a text file at C: est.txt . Upon clicking menu or end, the high scores are saved to the text file.
I'm trying to save a collection of key/value settings in my application's "user settings" (they're column widths), but while I see no errors, when I run the code (in the IDE) my collection in "My.Settings" is always nothing at startup. I do a "My.Settings.Save" when the application exits, and barring the "serializers not found" errors in the IDE, no other errors occur. When I run my application as an exe, it behaves the same way..

I may be wrong, if you encrypt something, close the app, and then try to decrypt it, it will not be able to because a different key will be generated. Because I do need this functionality, I am wondering if it's possible to save the key in application settings and whether this is the right way to go?

View 1 Replies(using VB.Net 2008) I am trying to save one of my custom types to the application settings. I've read a variety of opinions on the internet about whether this possible.
When creating an app setting, none of my types appear when browsing. However, previously I needed to save off one of my datasets, and it worked simply by hand-entering it as the setting type (ie, I just typed "MyProjectName.DatasetName"). However, when I try the same trick with another custom type that isn't a dataset, I get a "type was not found" error. So I'm a little confused, can the program "find" some custom types and not others?

I have 2 settings in my application, username and password.
When a user types in a username and password in my text fields i wanted it to save these values to the application settings that i set.
Now it does this fine while the application is up. If i close the app, and reopen it, the application settings are removed, and back to default.
I created a program with vb 2010,I create many variables in Settings Program for Save user Changes, It worked well, Saved and worked and I didn't add anything to this program, I could load Saved, but today I save Other Changes for test again it doesn't work and Clean other Changes to bass definition I did, I don't know why?

In the text box, it lets say you wrote hi
checkbox, you checked it off
listbox, you selected lets say HI from it.
How do you save the settings onto a file? Lets say a .cfg or whatever thats called file. Its like automatic, so that the cgf says lets say says:

NameOfListBox=HI
NameOfTextBox=hi

I'm looking for the best way to locally save settings to an application.I want the settings to "attach" themselves to the executable of the application so that I can send the application to another PC and still have the settings.The purpose of this is for a server that is going to issue an executable to anyone who requests it, the server sends an executable with the callback settings hardcoded into the application (for example IP, port and other settings) so that the application can connect to the server.I can't hardcode the settings in the source code because the application is going to be issued by different servers which of course, will need a different connection setting.I also don't want the settings to be stored on a file or any other "external" resource since then, the settings could be changed which could open security holes to exploit the application.So what I want to do: I want an executable to have some settings attached which will be set by another application. How can I set the settings of one application with another? And how can I efficiently save the settings internally on an application and then copy the file to another PC while still having the settings?

I want to make a wallpaper changer because windows high compresses the the image so you see artifacts even if already use a jpeg or even a really high quality png or bmp.
I know what I need to do for all of it I just need to know how to save an image to a jpeg without it being compressed. I have tried using the encoderparamters and getcodecinfo aswell as setting the quality to 100 but I still get a really bad looking image in the end.
Is there a way where I can save an image to a jpeg without getting the crappy image quality like with visual basic?
Is there a really simple way to save the app.config file to a location then load it again? I'm making a multiclient app. I was planning on having each user have a folder, and in that folder would be their personalized app.config file that would load when they log in. I don't really know any XML.

I would like to store some app data in a 'default system folder', so when I launch the program it will know where to look for it's own settings.As a matter of fact I only need to store there a path to the files used by the program. Users will be able to choose where to put them (simplified installation). The program has to know where to look for them.
Am I creating the folder properly? As you can see I'm referring to C:... The folder structure presented here comes from my laptop running on Windows 7 Ultimate. Maybe the C:... can be somehow defined by some sort of a system 'shortcut'. Following the above example the program would look for those in C:... , but maybe I can use something like ~~ default.app.settings.My Program Name ~~~. How does it work? Have no idea how to call it properly, but I'm sure you will know what I mean.
