I recently made an application which have some settings one of them a saving path
I want to make check if the saving path settings is available or not (drive)
If not so it got a default value which is application path
I tried to Change the default settings in the My.Settings by writing "Application.startuppath"But the application accept it as a string is there any way do dodge this problem?

I have an app that will need a file repository located in a subfolder in my program's directory. For example: c:program files (x86)myapplicationmyfiles But, I need to allow the user to be able to change the location of this subfolder if they wish to store them on a network drive etc..

is this a good idea or not really? instead of having to open a file through filestream, i would like to just save text in an encrypted format in application settings. is this OK if the text is under 10mb? what would be the best way of implementing this?

Using VB2008 Express and I have a group box and in Propities|application Settings I have the backcolour set so that it is saved when the program closes. I have noticed in the "Settings. settings" file it has the default colours, but how do I get them?

I just wondered if you can or can't save arrays using the settings system object. There seems to be no way of entering it at designtime. It seems implied you cannot create new user settings.subobjects at runtime. I'm looking to find the easiest way to save a populated array of PictureBox's. If the only way is a self/custom made/managed .ini file then I need to know so i can start on that but I was hoping to use some of all this phaff in the new frameworks usefully.

Is there a way to maintain application modified Settings in the settings files after a program update? i.e. I have 10 or so values in the settings file and the users can modify them... when I send a program update they revert back to what I initially programmed them to be.

i have created a user setting named 'setmeup' as string, scope = user, value = "magical meow meow!".in my code i access it and assign it a new value like this...my.settings.setmeup = "howdy cowboy!"my.settings.save()application.restart()when the application restarts, i expect the my.settings.setmeup = "howdy cowboy!" but when i check its contents its still "magical meow meow!".but when i use application.exit() instead of application.restart() and manually restart the program, my.settings.setmeup = "howdy cowboy!" which is correct.what must i do? i want to use application.restart() because i don't want the users to double-click the icon again to start the program. i want the program to restart automatically.

To start with, I know that applications scope settings are read only, and user scope settings are read/write. My problem is this: I am creating an application which will be used in a setting where an "administrative" user (admin in this case does not denote any computer ability whatsoever- just the one in control of the computer) will be installing my application onto a computer where several users will likely use the application. I have a number of program settings which I would like the administrative user to be able to set, and have those settings be used for all users who run the program.

I was wondering if it is possible to change the Proxy settings("Automatically Detect Settings") in IE without making the change to the registry. I wasn't sure if the Hive is similar in all operating systems, So I figured there has to be an API to make the change, also without having the restart the IE or the computer for that matter.

When they are not bound to application settings, they behave normally.After binding each of their checked properties to application settings, the following happens: I have to click an uncheckedradiobutton two times to have it checked. I'm trying to save a collection of key/value settings in my application's "user settings" (they're column widths), but while I see no errors, when I run the code (in the IDE) my collection in "My.Settings" is always nothing at startup. I do a "My.Settings.Save" when the application exits, and barring the "serializers not found" errors in the IDE, no other errors occur. When I run my application as an exe, it behaves the same way..

i want my form to read a textfile and make it like line 1 will put in textbox1.text and line 2 will put it in like textbox2.text and like when the app closes it writes textbox1.text to line 1 and textbox2.text to line 2 in the .cfg file
i found acouple codes, but i havent found one that worked for what i wanted to do

i am having trouble reading my XML settings. I Create new entries like this

The XML file will have multiple <Network> Entrys. I cant figure out how to loop the file and get every <Server> entry. But then if i opened a form and gave the variable one of the server entries how could i get that <Network> based on the server entries child parameters.

I'd like to know if there's a better way to read/write various user settings to disk. My program loads up a bunch of settings during load but also during execution from a few different forms, encrypted string values, boolean values, different types. The code seems to work okay but I have a feeling it's just not the best way to be doing this. Some of the settings are encrypted strings that have to be decrypted/encrypted so the code to read/write the text file is a bit different on some items. The data read from disk usually goes to a public string, a textbox, or a up/down type control. Below is about 1/10th of the settings that get loaded/written at various times. Anyone have a better way that might be more efficient that I should look at?

A Windows service written in VB.NET is using the My.Settings namespace for simplicity. There are only three settings to read, and these are read within the constructor of the ServiceLauncher.
I am attempting to install the service as such:
installutil GID.ServiceLauncher.exe
And this is successful, however the config settings it is using are not the ones within the GID.ServiceLauncher.exe.config file, instead it is using the ones baked into the app as Default Settings within Settings.Designer.vb (marked with DefaultSettingValueAttribute). [The questionable wisdom of Microsoft not allowing a developer to ignore default settings is another question entirely].
How can I further diagnose this issue, and maybe force a reload of settings? I tried calling My.Settings.Default.Reload, however this did nothing. All settings are application settings, and only differ by "value" from those in the auto generated file.
I have successfully attached the debugger using System.Diagnostics.Debugger.Launch() and true enough, the settings are still the default settings.
In anticipation of the question, the background: The reason for requiring configuration settings is because this is a very straightforward service that simply executes an exe; and this exe is in configurable location. There are other reasons also, such as I wish to have the service name configurable without recompiling.

I am practicing on how to print from vb.net (2008) i was able to print my text, however I am having hard time changing default page settings.When the script loads up it thinks my default printer is my 8x11 printer and adjusts the label for that. however I am using a small label printer and labels are very small like 1x2inch. After I hit print button I can get the printer dialog box up change the prinet however because margins are wrong, my print out is unaligned. I like to change my default printer at form load step.

I am am having some problems with using My.Settings. I have saved some strings with My.Settings.Save() and am trying to set the strings back to its default value. I have tried using My.Settings.Reload() but it does not do anything. What is the best way to set the strings back to its default value that I have set it to? The company has been using Visual Studio 2008 and .NET Framework 2.0 for approximately 2 years. During that time we released several versions (4.x.x) of our program to the public and were able to preserve the user's settings using My.Settings.Upgrade.During the past development cycle we upgraded the program to Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0 and changed the version to 5.x.x. Now, when a user upgrades from 4.x.x to 5.x.x they lose all of their settings.However, in all upgrades after that point (ie 5.0 to 5.1) all the user's settings are once again preserved.I checked C:Documents and Settings<USER_NAME>Local SettingsApplication DataCompanyName and it contains two directories:
ApplicationName_Url_aaa ApplicationName_Url_bbb
where aaa and bbb are 32 character strings. All of the user.config files for the 4.x.x releases can be found in the ApplicationName_ Url_aaa directory. All of the user.config files for the 5.x.x releases can be found in the ApplicationName_Url_bbb directory.Based on this information it seems like something changed when we converted our program to VS2010 and Framework4 that is now causing a different 32 character string to be generated. However, we have been unable to track it down.

I am rewritting my application to conform to ms standards. We used to save all settings to registry for user settings, servername, size and locations.so we are now saving them into My.Settings app.config the only problem is that each time there is an update clickonce will isntall the newupdate but now all settings are loist and user has to save everything all over again..
I am trying to follow the book here but it seems i keep getting stuck somewhere. registry has worked fine for years but i understand we must move on, but if stuff like this happens then i just wasted a long time converting all code to conform for it to not work..

My deployment of upgrades to an application written in C# (.NET 3.0) consist of simply replacing an older .exe with the new one. Because that older version can currently be used by some customers, I simply rename the old version to blahblah.exe.old and copy the new one to the same folder. When the user opens up the application again, the new one loads up.
The problem is, every time I deploy a new version, the user scope settings are always reverted back to the default values.
