I am just not happy with the fact that the user.config file gtets saved in the user's account folder. Is there a way to save it in the Application's Startup Folder instead? I couldn't find any configuration properties within the PROJECT PROPERTIES which would let me change the file location.

I wanted to know is it posible to change My.Settings location.. for example, not in user folder (dont remember in witch folder, but i know it was in some users folder..), but save in application folder?Cos i write programs portable, so they work if the folder with my program is moved even to different PC..It would be a great if i could use my.settings and store in the application path..Cos i have tried to save in registry, xml file, ini file, and they all are pain in the a*s..

I am trying to write a program where a user of my app can change the link location and label name.
At work we have testing scenarios that change at different locations, and instead of me sending updates every week, allow the user to update the link and label name by appending a file or db to pull the information?

I am attempting to create an application in an attempt so it could be run as the user and preserve individual settings, by this what i am trying to achieve is when the application is installed, it is installed once but each user has their own settings saved within their own profile - a bit like Office applications. How could i start with this?

Which is the best way to store application and user settings of an application running with multiple instances?My problem is that using the vb's "Application Settings" one instance would overwrite the other one.I want to identify each instance with a number passed via command line argument. I could use this number to identify the appropriate settings of the running instance, but I see in a local INI o XML file a better way to handle that.

I have a program, written in VB 2008, that I deplpoy in Terminal server, that has some user settings (scope: user) that I'd like to modify locally. By default the user settings were not even installed locally. I think they are supposed to appear in the ClickOnce data directory. Using the following thread, I was able to get the user.settings installed locally:
[URL]
basically, i set my xml file as "Content" and I set the publish status as "Data File".
With this, my settings file appears in:
"C:Documents and SettingsusernameLocal SettingsApplication DataCompanyXYZProgramNameL.exe_Url_arzmal0maveh1nnwfib245pfk13xqfma1.0.0.0user.settings"
The problem is that modifying this file doesn't affect the application. I changed some settings, restarted the app, and changes were ignored.

I'm trying to save a collection of key/value settings in my application's "user settings" (they're column widths), but while I see no errors, when I run the code (in the IDE) my collection in "My.Settings" is always nothing at startup. I do a "My.Settings.Save" when the application exits, and barring the "serializers not found" errors in the IDE, no other errors occur. When I run my application as an exe, it behaves the same way..

I'm looking for a way to specify the location for the User.config file that is used for storing the My.Settings object. It appears that this is not possible. The problem for me is, I don't want to be responsible for creating several different files on the users computer that really have no use and are difficult to find and clean once an update is released. For most users, this is not a serious problem, as many will probably never update the software, and most will probably only go through a couple of updates. On my system, there are config files for every build of the application, and the same to a lesser extent will be true for my beta testers.
I can understand that MS wants to make sure that no two applications will use the same location for storing application data, but a simple [UserData] [CompanyName][ApplicationName] for storing application data will probably suffice for 99.9999 percent of the legitimate applications in the world. Bogging a user's system down with erroneous files, no matter how small, is an unnecessary drain on system resources and a potential source of problems for the user. It's bad enough that most programs leave bits and pieces of themselves all over a user's system after De-installation - this to me seems only to exaggerate this problem.
Is the only way to get around this problem to write a whole new Settings Class? Is there a way to change the location of the UserConfig file to a more friendly (and more predictable) location that I am not finding for myself? It would seem that having at least the OPTION to specify a location for the User.Config file would be OBVIOUS and easy to implement, so why did they leave this out?

To start with, I know that applications scope settings are read only, and user scope settings are read/write. My problem is this: I am creating an application which will be used in a setting where an "administrative" user (admin in this case does not denote any computer ability whatsoever- just the one in control of the computer) will be installing my application onto a computer where several users will likely use the application. I have a number of program settings which I would like the administrative user to be able to set, and have those settings be used for all users who run the program.

If I create a user level application setting and bind it to a text box on a form, then type something in the textbox, the value is automatically saved and when the application is launched again the value appears in the textbox. This doesn't happen when I scope the setting as application.
Why are application scoped settings not saved automatically like user scoped settings are?
If this is by design, how can I manually save these settings and load them at runtime?

When a user installs the application from the ClickOnce location there is a noticeable delay after the install runs to when the program loads. Is there a way to put in a progress screen in this instance to instructed the user that there is still more to come?
There is also another instance when an email is being priocessed, there is a delay between the button click and when the email box displays. Need some sort of motion happening during that time.How is this done and what do I look for? Can I make a module that handles this and then just call it during certain activities?

Dim Bild1 As New Bitmap(Application.StartupPath & "/Bilder/binary1600.jpg")
Picturebox1.Image=Bild1
I get "Parameter is not valid" on the first line.

So were Application.StartupPath()is for example:"C: Main app folderSub app folder"How do i then go up a folder to"C: Main app folder"I Know it needs some string removal using on it but i can seem to get it right, after which i could then use Application.StartupPath() 'string removal here" & " ools"to navigate to another sub apps folder etc.

We have an application that's installed at several locations but we are having an issue at one particular site. In short the application settings (My.) are not being saved after a reboot. The application is build in VB.Net v3.5 Framework and we are not experiencing any issues elsewhere.
This particular site is using roaming profiles and the network administrator ensures us that the correct permissions are applied to the user account(s) and all application data is being saved to the server. I've asked the network admin to check for the existence of the user settings file user.config in the Application Data directory and he says it doesn't exist.
In our application we store the connection string to the database in the application settings under the user scope. If no connection string is present or if one is present and a connection to the database cannot be made then a form is shown asking the user for the database credentials. Each morning when the users boot the machine and opens the application for the first time they are asked for these credentials but if they close the application and restart it they are not asked for them. This indicates to us that the settings are being saved but once the pc is rebooted and the application is opened for the first time they are asked for the database credentials. This seems like the settings are not persisting after a reboot.

I have a little question about application settings. I have a regular expression in my code which should be customizable by the user so I made an application setting for it. The regular expression is used in a class in the project and has the following value
Dim email_regularex As String
So now I made a new Settings file in my project and gave the following value for this string in the settings file: ^([w-]+(?:.[w-]+)*)@((?:[w-]+.)*w[w-]{0,66}).([a-z]{2,6}(?:.[a-z]{2})?)$ [URL]
So when i do this in Visual Studio 2008, Visual Studio automatically creates a app.config xml file with the right settings in it. But when I start my application and use the regular expression like this:
Dim
myMatch As
Match = Regex.Match(email, email_regularex)
If
