Application/User Settings With Roaming Profiles?

Nov 10, 2009

We have an application that's installed at several locations but we are having an issue at one particular site. In short the application settings (My.) are not being saved after a reboot. The application is build in VB.Net v3.5 Framework and we are not experiencing any issues elsewhere.

This particular site is using roaming profiles and the network administrator ensures us that the correct permissions are applied to the user account(s) and all application data is being saved to the server. I've asked the network admin to check for the existence of the user settings file user.config in the Application Data directory and he says it doesn't exist.

In our application we store the connection string to the database in the application settings under the user scope. If no connection string is present or if one is present and a connection to the database cannot be made then a form is shown asking the user for the database credentials. Each morning when the users boot the machine and opens the application for the first time they are asked for these credentials but if they close the application and restart it they are not asked for them. This indicates to us that the settings are being saved but once the pc is rebooted and the application is opened for the first time they are asked for the database credentials. This seems like the settings are not persisting after a reboot.

Change Settings From Local To Roaming?

Jun 29, 2010

I need to change my application settings to use roaming profiles. Therefore I changed the roaming property of the according settings to True. Unfortunately I get now the behavior that the settings are still read from the local store (if they are existing there), but are written correctly to the roaming store.

What's the suggested way to change application settings from local to roaming?

Deployment :: Roaming Profile - Get The Installer To Install An Application Normally

Mar 4, 2012

Using Visual Studio 2010, Windows 7. Setting up project on one machine, then attempting deployment it on another machine with Windows 7 on it:

How do you get the installer to install an application normally, my app is installing on roaming profile, and I do not want it to install that way . . . I want it to run as a normal software application, it is not created for network use!

In short, I want the application to install under the Program Files directory, and the data files to install under the ProgramData directory. I have already designated the Application Folder's DefaultLocation as [CommonAppDataFolder] and the application data folder as [CommonAppDataFolder], . . . but it makes no difference, it still installs as a roaming profile.

VS 2010 : List All User Profiles On A Computer?

Nov 20, 2011

I have vbscript code that enumerates user profiles from this registry path:

HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionProfileList.

How can this be done using Visual Basic 2010? Is there a class or method that I would use to accomplish the same thing or would I have to read the registry path into an array as you do with vbscript? My application will be ran on the local computer just so you know this information is not being gathered from across the network. I have been looking for awhile and haven't found anything that will work so far.Once I have the user profiles from the computer, I will populate this list into a drop-down combo box.

.net - Store Application And User Settings Of An Application Running With Multiple Instances?

Jul 12, 2011

Which is the best way to store application and user settings of an application running with multiple instances? My problem is that using the vb's "Application Settings" one instance would overwrite the other one.I want to identify each instance with a number passed via command line argument. I could use this number to identify the appropriate settings of the running instance, but I see in a local INI o XML file a better way to handle that.

Save A Collection Of Key/value Settings In My Application's "user Settings"?

Apr 14, 2008

I'm trying to save a collection of key/value settings in my application's "user settings" (they're column widths), but while I see no errors, when I run the code (in the IDE) my collection in "My.Settings" is always nothing at startup. I do a "My.Settings.Save" when the application exits, and barring the "serializers not found" errors in the IDE, no other errors occur. When I run my application as an exe, it behaves the same way..

.net - Application Settings Scope - User Vs Application?

Apr 13, 2012

If I create a user level application setting and bind it to a text box on a form, then type something in the textbox, the value is automatically saved and when the application is launched again the value appears in the textbox. This doesn't happen when I scope the setting as application.

Why are application scoped settings not saved automatically like user scoped settings are?

If this is by design, how can I manually save these settings and load them at runtime?

Application Settings - Regular Expression - Customizable By The User

Oct 11, 2010

I have a little question about application settings. I have a regular expression in my code which should be customizable by the user so I made an application setting for it. The regular expression is used in a class in the project and has the following value

Dim email_regularex As String

So now I made a new Settings file in my project and gave the following value for this string in the settings file: ^([w-]+(?:.[w-]+)*)@((?:[w-]+.)*w[w-]{0,66}).([a-z]{2,6}(?:.[a-z]{2})?)$ [URL]

So when i do this in Visual Studio 2008, Visual Studio automatically creates a app.config xml file with the right settings in it. But when I start my application and use the regular expression like this:

Dim

myMatch As

Match = Regex.Match(email, email_regularex)
If

VS 2010 - My.Settings - Can't Find File Which Reflects Changes To User Settings

Apr 15, 2011

1. I can't find the file which reflects changes to user settings. This might be because I just can't find it (I can see a bunch of user.config files but they are all empty - weird!), or...

2. I'm not actually saving them when I think I am.

Regarding 2. - do I need to invoke

Is this all I need? And if so, why are my user.configs empty?

Application.Settings VB 2005 - Save Arrays Using The Settings System Object

Jan 14, 2009

I just wondered if you can or can't save arrays using the settings system object. There seems to be no way of entering it at designtime. It seems implied you cannot create new user settings.subobjects at runtime. I'm looking to find the easiest way to save a populated array of PictureBox's. If the only way is a self/custom made/managed .ini file then I need to know so i can start on that but I was hoping to use some of all this phaff in the new frameworks usefully.

Incorporate INI Files For Profiles In Order To Quickly Pull Up Data From One Person To The Next?

Nov 1, 2011

I am attempting to create a basic program and I need to know how to incorporate INI files for profiles in order to quickly pull up data from one person to the next.

Public Class IniFile
' API functions
Private Declare Ansi Function GetPrivateProfileString _
Lib "kernel32.dll" Alias "GetPrivateProfileStringA" _

[code]....

And placed it into a module, which I then wen't to my main program and attempted to place this:

Dim ini As New IniFile(Profiles.ini)
Dim value As String = ini.GetString("Names", "1", "Default Value")

To attempt to retrieve the data, but I get no error or information from it. The ini file is inside the folder of the project and I set the SectionName and KeyValue to the corresponding names. I think I am having trouble with syntax? Not 100% sure. This is the code that I got from the same source as the module for using the module.

Dim ini As New IniFile(FileName)
Dim value As String = ini.GetString("SectionName", "KeyName", "Default Value")

And I adjusted to what I believed would be the proper format.

When using Visual Basics to run the program, there is no problem and it works wonders. Here is the problem. When I run the program not in Visual Basics, when I go to open the form, it fails. At first, it was because I didn't update the configuration file to include the new settings. Which was dumb, of course, but I updated the file and made sure to put it with the program.

Reading And Writing Various User Settings?

May 18, 2011

I'd like to know if there's a better way to read/write various user settings to disk. My program loads up a bunch of settings during load but also during execution from a few different forms, encrypted string values, boolean values, different types. The code seems to work okay but I have a feeling it's just not the best way to be doing this. Some of the settings are encrypted strings that have to be decrypted/encrypted so the code to read/write the text file is a bit different on some items. The data read from disk usually goes to a public string, a textbox, or a up/down type control. Below is about 1/10th of the settings that get loaded/written at various times. Anyone have a better way that might be more efficient that I should look at?
