VS 2005 WMI Query - SQL Server Startup

Jan 5, 2011

I'm writing a program that will be able to start a window service (SQL Server) on demand. Some of our servers have both SQL 2000 and SQL 2005 installed. I'd like to run a WMI query on the server (either local or remote) to determine how many instances of SQL are installed, and then start the latest version of SQL server. Install paths to SQL instances / configs can be different due to SAN configuration, so I need to use a WMI query to get the services.

I was using the following query- "SELECT * FROM Win32_Service WHERE Name LIKE '%MSSQL$%' OR Caption = 'MSSQLSERVER' OR Name = 'SQLSERVERAGENT' OR Name LIKE '%SQLAgent$%'" This returns a bunch of SQL services, so I decided to cut it down- "SELECT * FROM Win32_Service WHERE Name LIKE '%MSSQLSERVER%' OR Caption = 'MSSQLSERVER'" But that query still returns other services (i.e. FullText, Active Directory Helper, etc.) that I don't want. Is it possible to create a WMI query to only look for MSSQLSERVER and SQL Server Agent services? Am I missing something?

Query Designed For MySQL Translated To Work For SQL Server 2005?

Apr 10, 2010

I've spent a whole day on this already without figuring it out. I'm hoping somebody can help me translate the following MySQL query to work for SQL Server 2005:

SELECT MAX ( messages.date ) AS maxdate,
topics.id AS topicid, topics.*, users.*
FROM messages, topics, users WHERE messages.topic_id
= topics.id AND topics.user_id = users.id AND
topics.forum_id = " . $forumid . " GROUP BY
messages.topic_id ORDER BY maxdate DESC

$forumid is a QueryString value defined in the following VB.NET code-behind code:

forumName.Text = "<a href='ViewForum.aspx?forumid=" & row.id & "'>" & row.name & "</a>"

SQL Server 2005 - Select From Multiple DB's & Compile Results As Single Query?

Sep 25, 2009

Ok, the basic situation: Due to a few mixed up starts, a project ends up with not one, but three separate databases, each containing a portion of the overall project data. All three databases are the same, it's just that, say 10% of the project was run into the first, then a new DB was made due to a code update and 15% of the project was run into the new one, then another code change required another new database for the rest of the project. Again, the pertinent tables are all exactly the same across all three databases.

Now, assume I wanted to take all three of those databases - bearing in mind that they can't just be compiled into a single databases due to Primary Key issues and so on - and run a single query that would look through all three of them, select a given set of data from each, then compile those three sets into one single result and return it to the reporting page I'm working on.

VS 2010 SQL Query Will Not Work In Startup Event

Dec 16, 2011

I'm checking if the application needs to update before the user starts the software. But, they have to enter a few items of data and then press enter. When they do, if an update is available, the application closes, my update app runs and then the new version is opened. I want to just update when the application is loading, so they don't have to waste time entering data if the application is just going to close anyway. But when I run the block of code to check for updates, I get an SqlException.

C# - Automatically Run Program On Windows Server Startup?

May 13, 2011

I'm trying to install an app on a windows server that is always on, but I'm running into problems. I've heard that I shouldn't make it a windows service (and would personally rather have a dialog app so I can see progress, etc) so I'm trying to use task scheduler. However, task scheduler keeps trying to close my app prematurely when it should only open it and leave it open.how I could have a dialog app run on startup (and stay running) on my server?

VS 2005 A Startup Form Has Not Been Specified?

May 12, 2009

I have a VB.net program that originally had a form. I added a module and then deleted the form, but now I get the error...

"A startup form has not been specified"

With VB6 I would change the startup object to sub main, but I can't see how to do this in the properties of the project. I tried changing the application type to console, but then I get the following error...

No accessible 'Main' method with an appropriate signature was found in 'WindowsApplication1'

How can I do this without using the original form?

Hide Form On Startup If App Occurred Because Of Windows Startup?

Jun 20, 2010

I can hide my startup form (or make it appear hidden) on startup. I can start my app on windows startup--through registry values--if the user checks a checkbox.

But if the app starts up on windows startup, I want the form to be hidden, so the program can just keep working without bothering anyone. If it starts up because the user started it, I want the form to be showing, because the user probably wants to change some settings or something.

Project In .NET 2005 With SQL SERVER 2005 Used As Database?

Nov 22, 2009

I had made a project in VB.NET 2005 with SQL SERVER 2005 used as database. Now i want to make a setup of this project but i am unable to integrate sqldatabase and .net framework in this setup project. Is there any way to do this. Because it is assumed that the client does not have .NET Framework installed nor he has SQL Server on his system and the worst condition would be he does not have even internet connection from where these two setups can be downloaded if we give the condition for downloading these programs from the net if the client does not have these programs installed on his machine.

Asp.net - Sql Server Query DropDownList Selected Value

Apr 30, 2012

I have a DropDownList that pulls values from a table in sql server. I want the dropdownlist to populate the list of values based on a selection by the user but also display the contents of the rest of my table in case they need to change something. For ex:

ddl1 has values of: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 user selects 5, so the value displayed in ddl2 is five, but if you exand the ddl2 you will also see the values of one, two, three, four...

This is the code in my load event...

If Not IsPostBack Then
result = dal.dbConnect(DAL.dbType.SqlServer, ConfigurationManager.AppSetting("SQLServerConnection"))

Sql Server - Pagenation On A Blog SQL Query?

Oct 13, 2011

I have a blog (non wordpress or anything) written in vb.net. At the moment I pull my data back just by bringing in the last 10 results: SELECT TOP (@bAmount) bCategory, bID, bImageURL, bInactive, bLargeImage, bPost, bPostDate, bPostTitle, bPoster, bStyle FROM Blog ORDER BY bID DESC

I'm just going to have back and forward buttons to go through the posts, but how do I do the SQL for say post 10-20 last posts rather than the IDs between the posts. (The IDs are incrimental, but can jump significantly).

So basically when I click back it gives me 10 posts that are 10 older than the first page results?

Sql Server - Sql Query And Double Var Values?

Aug 18, 2011

Im having an issue with a certain query,Dim nwLat As Double Dim Ssql As String

nwLat = nwLatHidden.Value
Ssql = " select * from customer where latitude < " & nwLat
TFRcount.SelectCommand = Ssql
TFRcount.SelectParameters.Clear()
TFRcount.DataBind()

All it does is refresh the page and does nothing; it should populate a chart. However when I replace nwLat with a value (eg where latitude = 56) it works perfectly and populates the chart. Any ideas what's wrong with nwLat?

EDIT: I switched nwLat to long and it works; however it only takes the number up to the decimal and ignores the rest. Any way to fix? (eg as double 56.764746 and long 56)

Sql Server - Store / Query Data In .NET?

Nov 23, 2011

At the moment I am using Access & an OleDb connection to store data. I went down this route originally because I though that this was the best way for applications that I am distributing to my clients.

I would prefer to use something like SQL Server but is this a good idea for software I am distributing? Does the average Joe's PC have SQL Server pre-installed? If not, I suppose I can provide them with a link to download it for free?

Is there any better alternatives to Access / SQL Server?

Asp.net - Use VB To Query Remote Server Event Logs?

Aug 27, 2009

I am working on creating a web app that will query event logs on internal servers for events using a specific ID. Since most of the servers are running Windows Server 2003, I cannot use the preferred System.Diagnostics.Eventing.Reader method that I was hoping to use.

I've seen the mention of using WMI, but would like to avoid this if possible. I have dabbled with the System.Diagnostics class but cannot seem to get it working when running on a server. It is able, when testing locally, to query my event log, but displays nothing when put on the final server. There is no error that is displayed after the program is ran.
