Check Insert Statement Of Dataset Table?
Mar 5, 2010my program is "live" and my customer has troubles because it doesn't functioning as well as it should.I don't know what happen, did I changed something or not but suddenly data won't save to database from newly created forms. Beside this form I have additional 20 forms and everything is working like a charm and I use same code logic to save data to database. I tried to find myself what could be the reason, check by entering data directly to database table (works fine), check insert statement of dataset table (seems fine, too) and everything I could imagine. But now I ran out of ideas and I had to ask here.
Also, I added 3 fields to database table (nvarchar, int and decimal). All 3 of them allow nulls. I changed dataset and data entry form and now data won't insert if I dont enter values to int and decimal fields. Also, this decimal field doesn't accept 0 value if enter but if I assign value 0 from the code than it is ok. I'm not sure if I somehow changed concurrency and somewhere. I tried to find where I can change it but I couldn't find it. I use Visual Studio 2008 and Sql Server 2005 Express. Language vb.net.

I know that the Fill method does not make sense in case of an INSERT statement, but I am new to this technology and the above statement does the job and updates the table w/o problems. My question is this: If there was an error (say a duplicate key error) how would I know this in my application? Should I be putting the above code in a try/catch block?
Also, if there is a "proper" method for running INSERT statements using a DataAdapter/DataSet combination that does not use the Fill method, please indicate that as well.

With one xml file it loads the schema and data just fine, but with another xml file it only loads the schema and not the data. There's no error thrown - just no data loaded.
Anybody have any ideas? I've attached the .xml file for your review. I would have attached the .xsd but the system wouldn't allow it.

Sep 4, 2009I've got a requirement to create report datasets by taking a list of tables, columns from those tables, filters on the tables, and relations between the tables - and build a dataset from them. All this information is contained in an xml file. So I:Read the data from the tables in the list into the dataset. Apply any filter criteria on the tables to the default views. Add any relations between the tables to the dataset relations. So far, so good, but now comes the hard part. One of the requirements is to create a default view (or table) of columns at the dataset level - with the appropriate constraints and filters applied. So there would be this default table or view that would have, for example, columns 1 & 2 from table1, columns 4 & 7 from table2, and column 5 from table3. This is where I'm stuck, because there doesn't seem to be a 'view' property or function at the dataset level.

VS 2005 - XML DataSet BindingSource With Different Filters
Nov 20, 2010I am attemting to read a .txt file database into an xml file and then read the xml file into a DataSet and then bind the dataset to bindingSources and then subsequently bind comboboxes and text boxes to the binding source. I am struggling with how to create bindingsources with different filters. I am not sure if I am even going about this the right way. Perhaps there is a better way. I already have the program working using traditional OLEDB and creating different datatables but I wanted to be able to add and edit my datafile so I decided to convert it to a xml file.

In a particular operation I want to create a dataset, bulk copy it to another SQL Server, then update a flag column in the copied rows.I'll have a system that will be regularly inserting new rows of data, then at regular intervals want to copy that data to another SQL Server. Once the rows have copied I need to change a flag column so that they won't get copied again.Whilst this is going on there is a strong possibility new rows of data will be being inserted into the source table. But when i insert the second set of records in is sorting int he table. but when i looked at the dataset by using gridview the recods appears in a right order. but the updated table is somewat sorted order. Is there any possible way to insert the records in the same order in the dataset..

VS 2005 Getting Information From DataSet To Populate Defaults In Controls?
Jan 27, 2011I have a form that has many controls. My next task is to populate the phone number (MaskedTextBox) and phone number type (ComboBox) when the cursor has lost focus from a ComboBox that has auto complete functionality. I have tried to do it and when the cursor leaves focus, the other controls are not populated. Nothing happens. I do not get any errors either. Screen shot attached for the form and I am also using a stored procedure to do this. There are two tables in question here. A client table that the name and phone number and then the second table that has the phone number type (cell, work, home, etc).There is an FK relationship between the two.
This is my stored procedure. It is called sp_GetClientInfoByName.

Mar 25, 2009I am compressing a dataset converted to XML using the GZipStream class added in 2.0. There are a few things bothering me about this. Here's the code I am using to decompress the XML file:

This seems inordinately awkward, as I am taking the stream, reading it out into byte buffers, then writing those byte buffers to a memory stream that is then passed to the dataset.ReadXml() method. The reason for this seems to have to do with what is happening in the line colored red. That line is adding a closing > onto the end of the stream. Without that, ReadXml complains about an unclosed dataset. I found out that the > was missing by writing the stream into a string and pasting the string into WordPad. Without that missing >, it appears that I wouldn't need to be using that memory stream at all, and could simply pass in the GZipStream to ReadXML, but as far as I can tell, it's impossible to look at the GZipStream to be sure that the > is not there, and it may be impossible to add it (I haven't tried).
So why is the > missing? Here's the code used to create the file that is being read into the filestream in the above

The real kicker to all of this is that while I was dissecting the first chunk of code, I added a line to check for cnt<1000. My intention was to see the last buffer that was being written into the memory stream to see whether the final > was actually there, or not. To my surprise, I reached the cnt<1000 twice. That means that one read did not read a full 1000 bytes, but read only 675. The next three or four reads were a full 1000 bytes, then the final read was just a few hundred bytes. It is my understanding that Read will return a full buffer if there are that many bytes left to read, and there were, so why did it return only a partial buffer? That suggests that there might be a hole in my XML, though with a half meg file, it's a bit much to read through it looking for something missing. However, the XML that was returned was turned into a dataset that I then merged into some existing data using code that has been working with uncompressed XML files, and I got an error that I should never have received. That may indicate that the XML was, in fact, missing something, though I will have to study the matter further to figure out whether or not that is the case. My major question has to do with the missing '>' at the very end of the file.
