Form1 is a mdi container. It has a bunch of forms that can load inside of it as mdi children. If I close each open form inside the form1, and then click the red X at the top right, application exits fine.If I click the red X without closing the forms inside I get: An unhandled exception of type 'System.CannotUnloadAppDomainException' occurred in mscorlib.dll
Additional information: Error while unloading appdomain. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131015) However I can break from it. How do I get the application to not show that error? What must I do to fix those inside forms or close when the red x is clicked?
I have a simple tcpclient/server messenger running. Everything works great, except for when a client exits the software. When someone exits, is crashes the server with various exceptions and the server has to be restarted, as well as the clients. What I am looking for is a way to properly "log out" a client BUT leave any other connected client on so that is no break in the chat. Then the person that logged out or a new person can join back in whenever they choose.

I have prided myself in having a pretty clean code however in the game I am making I have a player view (showscreen) and a host view, which is a copy of the player view (on a smaller screen). This way the host can see what's going on.The problem is that the graphic doesn't dispose properly and Garbage Collector gets it, though I have noticed it will crash if GC doesn't get it in time. The larger the showscreen window the more junk gets put into memory, which sucks.I thought I had everything correctly disposed below but still doesn't get the job done.

re writing these functions is a big task - and I am not interested in doing it unless absolutely needed. Here is my problem though. even if the connection is closed (and i have stepped through the code, it closes) The connection is still visible on the sql server in a sleep state why? and how can i make sure that the connection is closed.

sometimes my application will remain running after I close it. If I check the task manager, the process is still running. Is there anything specific that could cause this, or any way I can make sure to close the program completely?
View 22 RepliesI've created an app, which puts windows onto the desktop. When i click on the window it creates a new window and passes the first window's Items collection to the second window's Items collection. Opening the second window adds around 2-4 megs of memory to the app's mem usage. Now if i close the second window, the memory still stays on the same level as when the window was opened. When closing the window, i reset the Items property and clear all images that i'm using in it. It has a wrappanel with some elements, that's also cleared using the .clear function of the wrappanel.children. What else should i do to free up the memory?

View 2 Repliesmy application will remain open after closing every form. This is a recent issue in previous versions my application would close. I call dispose(true) on all form closing/closed events. (some forms require it on closing instead of close because of some custom made classes.)?

I have found a lot of articles about Reflection and know how to create a class. I'm practicing how to work properly with the reflection to create a module/plugin-based application.So I found a simple example which is working great, but it isn't dynamic enough, 'cause it is hard-coded. The above code is what I used in VB6 to close all forms associated with my programs before my program closed. I have been searching for information on how to make sure all forms are closed when closing a VB2008 program.
I have seen info on using the Project Property Shutdown mode When startup form closes and I currently have this set.
Is this all that is really necessary? Will the garbage disposal close everything else to free up RAM?
Also, if I have several forms open and want to close all from the main form without closing each one individually, what is the best approach? Is there a collection like in VB6, go through the collection, compare it to the name of the main form and close it if it is not the main form?
I am working on an application that starts a few threads every second. The threads don't do much, and everything seemed fine. I monitor the number of threads running, and I have never seen it higher than 4.
Last night I started the app and this morning I had this.
System.AccessViolationException: Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt.
The threads can make changes to two List(of Strings) and I had SyncLock's surrounding the code that did that. It has been running for several hours again and all seems well.
My question is that I found a place in the UI thread that was copying the list without the lock. Could that have caused the error?

I have 2 forms (form1 and form2). I'm passing 2 numbers from form2 to form1 (see image/attachment). I want to make sure that 1 of those 2 numbers (passed from form2) aren't the same as any number on form1 in column2. For example, if I were to pass the numbers "2, and 3", the program should give an error saying, there is already 3 in column2. It doesn't matter if the first number (in column1) is the same, but the second number should NOT be a duplicate of any number in column2.
View 7 RepliesI am novice at best with VB. I have a dataset built from a complex query. Well I have a lot more items in the dataset than I wish to show in a datagridview. Some items will be used for other purposes at the time, filling txt boxes, dropdowns, etc...all independent of the dgv. I am lost at how to fill just a 3 or 4 of the items rather than just filling the entire thing. So, instead of just filling the entire ds into the grid, how would I fill in selected columns into the datagrid that has specifically named columns at runtime?
View 2 RepliesI discovered a problem in C# (boo hiss!!!) but it applies to VB.NET as well.I decided to build a little app to load info from some audio files using Taglib-sharp (nice little thing it is!) and create a Winamp playlist from the loaded files. (I know it's lame, don't laugh! I just wanted to learn some C#!)I have a form with 2 DataGridViews. I load the first dgv with some tag info from the selected files. I then move those files from 1 grid to the other, shuffling their positions along the way.The annoyance I found is during form design. If I try and name a column in the second DGV the same as in the first (eg. "Filename") I get an error that says the name is already in use by another component.To me this is not right. The column is part of a separate object, shouldn't this mean that "Filename" in object1 isn't the same as "Filename" in object2? I even have to refer to the specific object to get the column's value in a row. [code] to access the column's value in the first row of dgvMine or dgvOther, then why does the darn designer care if "Filename" exists in dgvMine and also in dgvOther? Shouldn't they be separate declarations "within" each of dgvMine and dgvOther?

View 6 RepliesI have an MDI application that shows MDI forms with a single DataGridView on each form. The grid is bound to a List(Of Item), where Item is some class. Now I need to be able to drag (possibly multiple) items from one grid (in one form) to another grid (in another form).
Unfortunately, I know nothing about DataGridViews and even less about drag and drop, so this is turning into a real pain for me...I have been looking at examples for ages, but none of them work for me. Most of them don't deal with databound items, others don't seem to work at all, and yet others can only deal with a single row at a time (pretty useless for me).
This must be something that people need a lot, so I can't understand why the examples are so 'bad'.
Is there any way to change the properties of the DataGridViews default tooltip?ie.change it's display duration or text font/size.
View 3 RepliesThis code was put together for a one time run. It's purpose is to count all the pages in a group of images. After about 6000 of 1,250,000 images in ##X it throws an "out of memory" error. Besides it being thrown together for a one time run does anybody see anything obvious that could be causing the error?
