VS 2008 Best Interface - Use ForumsAccount's Tab Control And JuggaloBrotha's Gradient Form In Application
Jun 21, 2010
I'm constructing a Management system. Now, I have a problem with the interface design.
I wish to use ForumsAccount's tab control and JuggaloBrotha's gradient form in my application (both can be found in CodeBank).
But the problem is, I'm confused in the design ! Which one shall I use for the main form ? an MDI form or a normal form ?
Details about the Mgmt. System app: it will be used to manipulate everything for a small firm, like adding customers, employees, payments, etc.. Everything is managed using the app and saved to the db.

I am using a MDI form and child forms. Now I don't like the standard back colour of mdi form so I got code on the net which paints a gradient colour to the mdi. So far it is working okay. Now the problem is when I load a child form or close it or do a similar activity then it causes flicker in the mdi background. This gets pretty annoying at times and you see the background flicker.

I have recently moved from developing in vb.NET 2008 to vb.NET 2010. There is a form in the application that uses an old Ascend Gradient Caption control to visually separate sections of the form. These controls are located on a tab control. The problem isthat the gradient captions seem to be unstable. They appear in odd locations on the tab pages at runtime, and I can't seem to select them in the designer. I can choose them from the combo box on the property page and edit the properties, but they stillbehave erratically. I understand that these are older controls and was wondering if anyone has had this problem and/or could recommend an alternative control

This is VB 2008, under Vista. I can't seem to change the background color of a button without the gradient disappearing.Strangely enough, you can even set the background color to itself and the gradient disappears. How do you keep the gradient but change the color?
Here's an example:
Code:
Public Class Form1
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Button1.BackColor = Button1.BackColor ' This should do nothing!

I look at hundreds of VB.Net user interfaces through the internet and they all look horribly unsophisticated from a graphics point-of-view.Compare this to the backgrounds seen on tv broadcast that use blurred line gradients to create graphics that have some interesting appeal and draw the eye to them (at least my eye).I've attached some sample screenshot grabs below that I have annotated with magenta rects showing the interesting sections. What types of graphics routines can produce these types of graphic effects? The options that I have identified so far:
1.) More carefully done line smearing (see below..)
2.) Line drawing with a VB.Net version of the "Bresenham's line drawing algorithm"(as passel mentions in this post) (that might allow a specialized set anti-aliasing routines - like a wu algorithm).
3.) Line drawing with some Gaussian blurring as seen in the attachment to this post from my Perlin Noise thread.
4.) Possibly a gradient shaped by a vector GraphicsPath?
5.) Some other VB.Net gradient generating method?Possible the use of multiple passes with an alphafade brush?
6.) Last resort: manipulating the colors of individual pixels with lockbits marshal copying (highly undesirable).
I've done a fairly complete survey of whats out there on the internet for VB.Net samples for drawing lines to see if any of them combined line drawing with gradient effects and found very little.I played around with some code I found that did line drawing through mouse dragging and managed to achieve what I call the "line smearing" effect.I've attached my Line_Smearing_Demo below..As yet I have been unable to combine lines with shaped bezier curves,to produce Guilloche/Lissajous/complex Spirograph patterns like those seen on this page.

I would like to make an application where there is no form, only controls, this way theuser can see what they are doing on top of their work. How could I for instance put a textbox on the screen, just like form1, but without it being a parent of form1, almost as if it was form1. Basically form1 is hidden.

I've got an app that I want to have an MDI with. It functions fine, but there needs to be a control panel off to the side of it to drive the child documents' creation. I have two problems with this.
First, if I add the control panel to the side of the form, it just overlays the MDI portion of the form and the children will spawn behind it. I can more or less manage the positions of these children, but the problem comes when I want to minimize the children, they minimize behind the control panel and I don't know how to move them. So I need to shrink the area they can move around in. I've read in places that you can use the splitter object, but that never seems to cooperate with me and only wants to move to the extreme left or right of the parent form. How can I reduce the area the children get to interact with? I've tried creating a MDI Panel, but VS has a fit with that.
Second, I've got a datagridview holding the data that will spawn the child forms. This is working well, but even though I've set the rows to be not resizeable, I can still make them grow or shrink during run-time (not programmatically). How do I stop this?

I have this code for a gradient form(EXAMPLE 1). It works fine on its own.I tried putting it into an existing project of mine and I cannot get it to work. The project is quite large so I am no sure what the issue is. Is it due to the fact that I have an InitializeComponent() line in the my Sub New in Example 2? Note I have alot of code
EXAMPLE 1:
Public Class Form1
Private Sub Form1_Paint(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.PaintEventArgs) Handles Me.Paint
'Creating a new Rectangle as similar width and height of the base form

I was going through the example code on FTDI's website. After opening the device and setting the flow control to be RTS/CTS they send and receive data in the following manner:
[Code]....
Basically they set the RTS, DTR, then write data to the device. Is this correct? If I was sending multiple times to the device, do I need to clear the RTS each time? and then set it high again? or do I just set it high each time I send new data? Why are they setting DTR if the flow control is defined as RTS/CTS? As far as best practices go, is this the best way to read and write?

Using VB 2008. We have an app with a third party grid on it works well enough. This is a small utility within a bigger suite, and adding/updating it involves a simple EXE copy. The issue I am trying to address is that not all customers will have the 3rd party controls on their systems, and we want to avoid deploying them if we can.
Can I build the app so that if the controls are present, the app uses them. But if they are not present, I use a simpler control? I picture using a 'launcher' form that tries to load Form2 with 3rd party. if it errors, then just load Form3 with common controls. But can I even get to that point? With missing controls, will the app even load? I understand Late Binding for objects, but this is a control right on the form. Can I late bind a control and add it to form dynamically perhaps?

I am using Visual Basic.NET 2008. I was earlier a VB 6 developer. I found a (VB 6) code online which generates gradient colours on a form. It has a small sub (routine) which does the trick. If we pass red, green and blue values then form's backcolour changes and it appears like a gradient. Now that code is not working in VB.NET.i mean is there an easier way to generate gradient colours in VB.NET (2008)convert the code I have into .net specific so form's backcolour becomes gradient.I have attached a zip file which contains the code.

How can I change a form's backcolor to gradient one. The code (VB.Net) -
e.Graphics.FillRectangle(New Drawing.Drawing2D.LinearGradientBrush(New PointF(Me.Width, 0),
New PointF(Me.Width, Me.Height), Color.FromArgb(0, 58, 140),
Color.FromArgb(0, 215, 255)), New RectangleF(0, 0, Me.Width, Me.Height))
'fade from left to right
This code changes the form's background to a gradient one. It works fine. Now I want this to take place in an MDI form which will be a container for other forms. If I turn option IsContainer = False then it works but otherwise it does now. How can I change backcolor of MDI Form to a gradient one ?

I have a form which I am adding a gradient to. However on this form I have aTableLayoutPanel (with controls) with the dock set to Fill. When it fills it covers up the form and the gradient on the form. Is it possible to make the TableLayout Panel and its controls colour clear or can you pass the same gradient color from the form to all the controls in the TableLAyout Panel (including the TableLAyoutPanel).

I've got all the code figured out to make a picture box appear with a gradient inside of it. My problem is that the gradient doesn't appear in the picture box when the form loads, paints, or when the picture box is painted. I can only make the gradient appear if i click the picture box after the form appears.

Dim xFormBottomColour As Color = Color.DarkOrchid

I am trying to create an interface between a third party application which can make use of C/C++ DLLs, but no interface directly to .NET. What I was hoping to accomplish (not sure if possible though), is create a very basic C++ DLL (not .NET), which the third party application would call directly. This DLL would contain a basic method such as "DoSomething()". Somehow, from my .NET application, I want to "listen" to this DLL and "takeover" the DoSomething() method, and then returning the result back to the DLL, which will in turn return the result back to the calling third party application.
I don't even know if this is possible because I'm sure I would somehow have to get a hold of the memory space of the DLL as initiated by the third party application. Also, it seems that creating a managed DLL does not work, based on feedback from other individuals who have tried this.

I'm working on a design project where I have to use a Graphical User Interface that contains a drag and drop form. It consists of having a window dropped on a wall. Both of them are images to scale. I would like to know what kind of code I would have to use to show the x and y coordinates of one of the points of my window when dragged so when I drop it, I'm dropping in it on the desired coordinate of the wall.

This might be a stupid question but I cannot figure out how to do it. I am making an application used as a touch interface. What I want is to make a form in VB.net, ie buttons and a browser window and possibly some images. When I press a button such as next page etc. I would like it to be a new interface ie different buttons maybe a picture instead of the web browser etc, pretty generic. I can see how I can do using multiple forms but I am wanting it to be one application/one window.
Am I missing something as I thought this would be a pretty normal thing to do, ie having different UI's so when you click a button it takes you to the next page. Should I been using multiple forms and then get the form2 to replace form1 etc?

The following code works perfectly to allow moving a control on a form at run-time. However, when AutoScroll is set to True on Form1, and you drag Button1 past the right and/or bottom bounds of the form, it goes haywire. I really need someway to smoothing control the autoscroll so that as you scroll the control off the form, the scrollbars smoothly appear.

I have a VB windows application and I need a way to control input output from this windows application to a batch file. The batch script is quite complex so converting to a VB console application is out of the question because it will too much time.An simplified example is this:I have this batch file test.bat(just for example)
@echo off
set /p choice=name : %choice%
echo Hello %choice%!
In this batch file the user input the name which is then stored in a variable and after the user press enter on the screen will appear Hello + user input.
1. Is it possible to enter the name in a textbox from the windows form and by pushing a send button pass the name to the batch application and then the batch file to continue the operation of displaying the Hello message?
2. After the batch file finishes the operations it will open another console windows (3) with status of the various operations that take place on the system(in my case connected users to a server)Is it possible to hide this child console windows that are generated after my main .bat application finished the operations of opening connections? Can this be done from the windows application or I need to modify the .bat script?
3. Is there a way to collect the console windows output in a textbox from the windows application? One idea that came to me was to redirect the console output to a textfile and then read the textfile in the VB application but I want to know if there is another way.
4. Is it possible to hide this batch file inside the windows application exe?
