VS 2008 - Build Must Be Stopped Before Solution Can Be Closed

May 20, 2011

When the Visual Basic compiler (Vbc.exe) crashes, Visual Studio fails to detect this and becomes stuck in an inoperable state. The "Build" menu appears as it would if the solution were building, but the Cancel Build (Ctrl+Break) menu item has no effect. Trying to close the application or the solution gives the error:
"The build must be stopped before the solution can be closed."
I can't find any way to remedy this short of terminating the devenv.exe process and restarting Visual Studio completely. Is there anything quicker and less severe?

C# - Place DLLs In GAC On Solution Build In Debug

Dec 16, 2009

We have a couple of DLLs that need to be put in the GAC at compile time only in Debug mode as this is what developers use locally. Release mode will be the Continuous Integration server build and we will not want to put any dlls in the GAC. We used to do something similar with post build events on a project, but if a post build event can be conditionally run if debug. What is the best way to achieve this?

VS 2008 Make A Release Build Instead Of A Debug Build?

May 3, 2010

I am using 2008 Express Edition. I am trying to make a Release build instead of a Debug build.Under Tools->Options, Projects and Solutions->General - I checked Show advanced build configurations. The option to switch configurations does not show up in the IDE.

After this, I went to the Project Properties->Compile and switched the Configuration from Active(Debug) to Release.After building, I looked in my project directory, however only in the Debug sub-directory was the .exe and nothing in the Release sub-directory.I have used Visual C++ Express Edition, where I noticed that if you do not change to Release in the IDE than after changing to Release in properties, resets the project to the last configuration setting which is usually Debug.how to make the Debug/Release box available in the IDE, since Tools/Options does not make it show up?

VS 2008 Add Threads And Then Something Else Has Stopped?

Mar 3, 2010

I have a process that may take a while, so I decided to put it into a thread and adding some GUI (progress bar) to calm the users down while it's working in the background.The thread itself is working properly.The problem is that the cursor, which I wrapped with a 'sandglass' before using the thread ("Me.Cursor = Cursors.WaitCursor"), has stopped working, and I can't figure out why. When I debug, it's getting inside the function and relevant line - but ignore and do not change the cursor.

Attached is the code, before and after:

Before - working properly:

Private Sub PictureBox1_Click_1(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnGetReport.Click
Me.Cursor = Cursors.WaitCursor
If IsValidatedFields() Then

What will happen to the datareader when the Connection is closed ( Conn.close)

Will the Cursor that is used by the datareader be freed ? or will it stay open ?

If the cursor that is used by the datareader is still open , when will it be automatically closed ? or should i just closed it manually ?

VS 2008 Form Will Not Release Connection When Closed?

Apr 26, 2010

I have a form that contains a crystal report viewer. When I open this form, it runs a report. I am using a .LDB viewer to tell who is logged into an access database. I noticed that when this form opens, the computer logs into the database and stays logged in. Even when the form is closed, the computer is listed as "logged in". If I run the report again, it just adds another instance of that same computer logged in. Therefore, it continues to pile up logins until the application is closed.

VS 2008 - Windows Dialog Forms Hidden But Not Closed

Jan 24, 2010

I am using a Windows Dialog form in my VB 2008 project. I bring up the dialog form no problem with the following
Dim resultNewInc As DialogResult
resultNewInc = frmDialog.ShowDialog()
If resultNewInc = DialogResult.OK Then
...some code here ...
End If

And in the Dialog Form, the OK button has code
Me.DialogResult = System.Windows.Forms.DialogResult.OK
Me.Close()

But there is one problem. If I call up the dialog form again, the form controls have the text values that were typed in during the previous instantiation and a class which is part of the form was not disposed. So it looks like the form is being "hidden" and not closed. I tried to use the code form.dispose but it didn't work.

[2008] Closed: Entity Framwork - Bind To A Textbox In UI?

Jan 6, 2009

I have a application based on the entity framework. I have extended one of the classes (Quotes) wit 'partial class', and within that i've created a method that is completely independant of any database properties. For simplicity lets say it looks like this:

[code]...

All is good, except i need to bind this to my a textbox in my UI and have the textbox update automatically when the property is changed (like a dependency property). This is proving problamatic, I've tried both invoking the onPropertyChanged sub that the entity framwork exposes and implementing intoifychanged. Both cause errors.

VS 2008 Combining Projects Into A Solution?

Apr 6, 2011

As far as I know , it is possible to combine projects into a solution . So , lets say we have 3 projects . Each project has a starting form , lets call them SF1 , SF2 and SF3 .What I would like to ask you is how can I write code in order to have both the solution and the partial projects , working . You see , the solution (which as far as I know will also be accompanied by a new project) has to have a starting form ; lets call it SF0 .A) First of all I'd like to know how can I call a partial project from the solution itself .B) What code do I have to write in the partial projects in order to keep them running correctly when they are separate (that is not part of the solution) . I am asking this question too , because as I guess , there has to be code in SF1 , SF2 and SF3 (into buttons) that lead back to SF0 , but

Conversion Completed Dialog Box Cannot Be Closed When Converting From VB 2005 To VB 2008?

Dec 28, 2010

I've been asked by management to convert all of my applications from VB 2005 to VB 2008 (in preparation for taking them to VB 2010). I have a VS 2005 application that uses an ADO Data adapter which was defined using the GUI. I normally define my connections in code, but have been asked to get away from that in favor of ADO (and similar) data adapters.When I run the conversion wizard in VS 2008, it appears to convert this program, with some warnings and I get the 'Conversion Completed' dialog box. However, the VS 2008, will not let me close the dialog box, even after waiting for 3 hours. The only way to get out is to reboot the system.
